About the Author
Joseph Pearce is Director of the Center for Faith and Culture and Writer in Residence at Aquinas College in Nashville, Tennessee. He is a renowned biographer whose books include his autobiography, Race with the Devil: My Journey from Racial Hatred to Rational Love (Saint Benedict Press, 2013); Candles in the Dark: The Authorized Biography of Fr. Ho Lung, Missionaries of the Poor (Saint Benedict Press, 2012), Through Shakespeare's Eyes: Seeing the Catholic Presence in the Plays (Ignatius Press, 2010); and Tolkien: Man and Myth, a Literary Life (HarperCollins, 1998). He is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Higher Education from Thomas More College for the Liberal Arts and also received the Pollock Award for Christian Biography. He is co-editor of the St. Austin Review and has hosted two series on Shakespeare for EWTN, as well as hosting several EWTN productions on J. R. R. Tolkien.

A masterful and erudite analysis of LOTR and of the pivotal character, Frodo. I have read the novel several times over the years, and never have come near Joseph Pearce's insights. After reading this book I have one question bordering on trivia: I would like to know the artist and the relevance of the illustrations, They intrigue me and frustrate me because there is not a word of reference to them anywhere in the book. Whom or what do they depict? I wish Mr. Pearce or the illustrator, if another than the author, would comment on them.
Great informative reflection on the epic series The Lord of the Rings. It highlights key events in the story to explain the Catholic comparison. For Tolkien himself was a Catholic and he said, in a letter to Robert Murray, "The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work," he wrote, "unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision. That is why I have not put in, or have cut out, practically all references to anything like "religion", to cults or practices, in the Imaginary world. For the religious element is absorbed into the story and the symbolism" (Pearce, pg 1).
Joseph Pearce is great at unlocking the meaning and messsage in works of fiction.
Well done referring not only to The Lord of the Rings text, but the author has used Tolkien's letters and interviews to confirm Tolkien's purposes and intentions in writing.
This is the fourth of four books by Joseph Pearce that I have read. I am a Roman Catholic so he is Catholic perspective on Tolkein and Shakespeare has greatly increased my enjoyment of these authors.
Absolutely fantastic read, only wish that it was longer. For anyone like me who only recently found out that Tolkien was Catholic and wanted to learn even more

Joseph Pearce has done a great good in his expository of the character of Frodo, as well as of the LOTR. Most people who have read Tolkien simply enjoy the stories at their most superficial level; but they do do not make the effort to respond to the niggling in their subconscious which tells them to consider things more deeply. Pearce has done this, and thus revealed deeper meaning and significance in the characters and events throughout the LOTR. The effect of this new insight is to re-present the whole story with "more brightly colored" understanding.
