I am not giving this one star because it is a terrible product but because it is somewhat misleading what is on the flashcards. I purchased these with the hope of expanding my vocabulary for the GRE, I assume essential meant terms that frequently come up on the exam. When they say essential they mean these are words you better know, and if you made it through your bachelor's without knowing them it is a shock. The words on these cards are just too easy, it might be helpful for someone studying for the SAT but these are not GRE level words. If your vocabulary is very weak this will probably help you but if you already have a decent one go for the advanced cards. I returned these and was going to purchased the advanced cards but purchased access on their app, as well as started using the Magoosh free app, and feel I am actually learning new words rather than just refreshing on words I know but do not use in casual conversation.

I recently took the revised GRE and scored in the 85th percentile on the verbal section (much to my surprise I might add). I used both the Manhattans 500 Essential Words Flash Cards 500 Essential Words: GRE Vocabulary Flash Cards as well as the Manhattan 500 Advanced Words Flash Cards 500 Advanced Words: GRE Vocabulary Flash Cards. After making it through both of these sets of flash cards, I felt like I had a fairly good vocabulary for the GRE and did see many of these words on the test. [By the way, if these cards are out of stock on Amazon, just call Manhattan and buy them over the phone, that's what I had to do. I don't know why they have issues stocking these on Amazon]With this noted, if you do have additional time after finishing these two sets of flash cards, I **HIGHLY RECOMMEND** that you learn the 300 or so most common root words for the GRE as well. Root words are very helpful in deciphering words that you don't know that will come up on the GRE. I found Barron's Essential Words for the GRE book Essential Words for the GRE (Barron's GRE) to be a good source for this, although I'm sure you can find these same root words in the Kaplan or related books as well. And while 300 root words seems like a lot of words to learn, you will probably know some/many of these words already, so fear not! There doesn't seem to be a good set of root word flash cards out there, so I ended up making my own, which was fine. One last note about learning root words: they will also help to strengthen and reinforce the vocab words you already know or are learning from both sets of the Manhattan cards. Learn your root words! If you need help with reading comprehension and verbal practice problems, I used several different books. Here is my preferred list of books, in order:Kaplan New GRE Verbal WorkbookNew GRE Verbal Workbook (Kaplan GRE)While I usually don't like Kaplan as a company (and I have not used any of their other books), I *would* highly recommend using their verbal workbook as there seems to be a good amount of practice problems and they seem similar to what you might see on the GRE.Secondly, I did use the Barron's GRE Verbal Workbook Barron's GRE Verbal Workbook and while I found it useful for it's large amount of practice problems, I found some of the vocab words used as answers were less common that what I saw either on the GRE or on other practice problems and practice tests. With this noted, I still recommend using this book. Finally, I did use Manhattan's Reading Comprehension and Essay GRE Strategy Book as well. Reading Comprehension & Essays GRE Strategy Guide, 3rd Edition (Manhattan Prep Strategy Guides). The best thing I got from this book is learning how to take brief notes while reading over the reading passages on the GRE. Taking notes helps to reinforce what you are reading, a technique not talked about very often by other books. The practice problems in this book are decent, but nothing above that. I do wish they could have put more practice problems in this book (like the Kaplan Verbal Workbook), but there is still useful content here. If you are struggling with the analytical writing section, there are some good tips on this section as well. One final note about both practicing your verbal, but also your math/quantitative: do as many practice tests as you can!!! When you purchase a book (any book I believe) from Manhattan, you get an access code to 6 full length online practice tests. I found these practice tests VERY VERY USEFUL for getting comfortable with the GRE format but also applying all of the verbal and math skills I was practicing. Most of the questions are very similar in difficulty to what you will see and you can review your questions as well. By the way, always review problems you get wrong, this is really important! For Kaplan, you have to purchase the Kaplan Premiere GRE review book to get the disc with access to 10 verbal practice tests and 10 quantitative practice tests. Like the Manhattan, I found these practice tests VERY VERY useful. Do yourself a favor, and get access to both the Manhattan and the Kaplan practice tests It will help immensely!

These are by far the best way for me to learn new vocabulary. I looked at all kinds of different GRE vocab media, including flash card and activity apps, website vocab learning quizzes, and different books which took an incredible variety of approaches, including dictionary-like, thesaurus-like, grouping words by category, and activities getting you to absorb the meaning from context clues. In the end, I got this and the 500 Advanced Words sets because they had everything the books had in an easy-to-sort format. The first thing I did was start yanking out chunks of cards and separating them into three categories: Known, Review, and Study. The Known pile includes cards I don't have to look at again, but serve as a reminder of how much I already know! The Review pile includes cards that had a definition or partial definition I wasn't familiar with, but, for the most part, I knew the word. The Study pile was the scary pile of words I didn't know.Once I got over my fear of the size of the Study pile, I started pulling them out of the pile in groups, reviewing them from the front and the back, and taking advantage of their reminders, helpful hints, synonyms, and root words (all listed conveniently on the back). When I hit a rut in my focus, I began turning the cards into crossword puzzles using online crossword puzzle generators. And once I started being able to see my progress, which the cards make uniquely possible (i.e., my new fourth pile, "Learned" was getting bigger and bigger and eventually was bigger than the "Study" pile), I felt even more encouraged to tackle more of them.Someone told me before I started that you can't really learn vocabulary for the GRE. You either know it or you don't. Yeah, I'm here to tell you that's 100% incorrect. I can't believe how many new words I've learned! And I've got these cards to thank for it. I definitely recommend making the piles I talked about if you tend to get discouraged or anxious...it's a constant visual reminder of exactly where you are and how far you've come. (It does take a while to separate them, but it's worth it.)In short, I highly recommend getting these and the 500 Advanced Words sets in printed (vs. digital) format so that you can sort them. The cards are high quality with great example sentences, comparisons, synonyms, roots, and even silly hints that can help you remember complicated words. Separate out the words you know (go you!), then learn the ones you don't!Study on! We can do it!

As everyone has already stated these cards are great for studying (vocabulary, content-wise). The quality seems very durable, however, the ring is very small and does not fit as many cards as I would hope. Also it seems like the hole-punch area of the card will rip overtime if you use the ring too much.A MAJOR complaint is the fact that cards #1-50 were duplicated! (Someone else mentioned this issue!) So you are not really getting 500 cards, more like 450. #1-50 are A-letter words. Then there is another set of these cards labeled #1-50 again. Then it jumps to #101 for C-letter words. There are NO B-letter cards which is honestly annoying. Luckily the cards are supposed to be correctly numbered so I noticed this immediately. If this is the case contact for a refund and get a new deck because it does not seem to be something everyone is complaining about.... just the lucky few.

A commentary by a United Methodist Pastor on the book "Pagans in the Promised Land: Decoding the Doctrine of Christian Discovery" by Steven T. Newcomb (2008; Fulcrum Press. ISBN 978-1-55591-642-8).A little background for those of you who are unfamiliar with "decolonization". Anthropologically speaking, decolonization refers to the effort to systematically remove all forms of the invasive and pernicious effects of colonization upon indigenous peoples. Further, decolonization includes developing ones ability to understand and discuss non-European cultures from an unbiased and non-Western perspective. In other words, decolonization finally offers "voice" to the First Nations of the Americas. Native American nations have experienced 500 years of the destructive affects of Euro-American colonization upon their bodies, minds, spirits, souls and psyches. Decolonization thinking attempts to un-do or at least seriously address this destruction. There is a growing body of research and writings which contribute to such decolonization thinking, including "Pagans in the Promised Land: Decoding the Doctrine of Christian Discovery".For those unfamiliar with it, decolonization literature can seem frightening or "radical" because it tells history's tales and approaches the truth of existence from completely different perspectives than those with which the mainstream is familiar. In the case of the North American continent, the tales are told (and assumes that the world works) from an indigenous worldview, NOT a Euro-American one. Euro-American critics of decolonization bandy about terms like "revisionist history". The truth is: when anyone is confronted by a body of knowledge radically different than what they've always heard/been taught/accepted "fright-flight" pretty much takes over. Humans fear and condemn what we do not know and recognize. Each of us have deep-seated views and ideas about how the world works, what our place is in it. We hearse and rehearse our stories and know them by heart. When something or someone comes along that attempts to change or add too our story, our experience, what works for us, we (naturally) become uncomfortable (in the old vernacular: it can "pull the rug out from beneath us"). The process of decolonization can have that affect. Books like "Pagans in the Promised Land" are meant to shake up the readers' status quo and shove readers outside their comfort zone. What makes this book unique however, is it's specific focus on the realm of "law": United States law as applied to the indigenous peoples of North America. It takes the reader back to the origins (the "whys") of the US governments' approach to "Indian law". Particularly, it brings to light the U.S. American "Christian" assumption/belief/philosophical construct which asserts that USAmerican Christians are the successor/inheritors of the "chosen people" status bestowed upon the Hebrew people by Yahweh as recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament, and that because the indigenous nations inhabiting the Americas were not Christian but "heathen" the "Christian's" had divine right to the land. The author asserts that the central premise of United States Indian law and policy - that the United States has plenary (virtually absolute) authority over Indian nations on the basis of discovery of the North American continent by Christian people. Also called the "right of Christian discovery", this praxis is derived from the Old Testament theology in which Jehovah declares the favored and chosen status of the Hebrew people and by virtue of this chosen status delivers to them a promised land whose inhabitants they are to completely obliterate and whose fruits they are to take as their own. Euro-American Christians coming to North America during the so-called "Age of Discovery" see themselves (as they have throughout their history) as the new "chosen people" with a divine mandate to take over this new "promised land", exploiting its resources (per the Genesis command to subdue the earth) while disposing of the heathens dwelling therein.Using cognitive theory (particularly "idealized cognitive models" or ICMs) as a tool for decolonization thinking, the author takes readers through a detailed examination of the 1823 Supreme Court ruling "Johnson [& Graham's Lessee] v. M'Intosh" - which the author asserts is "the cornerstone" of the use of "the dominating mentality of Christendom against Indian nations and peoples in U.S. law". Successive chapters aptly titled and smoothly progressing from one premise to the next (The Conqueror Model, Colonizing the Promised Land, the Chosen People-Promised Land Model, the Dominating Mentality of Christendom, Converting Christian Discovery into Heathen Conquest, the Mental Process of Negation, and Christian Nations Theory: Hidden in Plain Sight) slowly build the authors compelling case. Now that you know what "Pagans in the Promised Land" is about (it's core idea, if you will) let me tell you what it ISN'T about. First, it isn't about your comfort level as a reader; you will be challenged about some basic assumptions - that is, if you LET yourself be challenged. Second, this book isn't a chronological history of the "age of discovery". It's a "there is no spoon" journey of revelation, and a "turn-history-upside-down-and-shake-and-see-what-falls-out-of-its-pockets" primer. Third, "Pagans in the Promised Land" isn't a history book or an anthropological treatise. It's really more of a psychology/sociology study. Although it's application is in the field of law, you do not need a legal degree to understand the text. And fourth, regardless of what you may think by its title, this book also isn't a primer for Christians on the most effective means of evangelizing indigenous populations. Its a wake-up call - an indictment of a "Christianity" whose rigid legalisms and centrisms not only allow for but even appear to leave room for the enjoyment of the oppression of certain groups of human beings. This is the kind of "Christianity" the author of "Pagans in the Promised Land" is referring to throughout the book - the kind of Christianity with which the vast majority of First Nations people have been exposed to, inundated by, and destroyed by in the 500 years since first contact with "Christian" European nations. Perhaps if the "Christians" who came to a "new world" had been more devoted to following the teachings and moral example of Christ than in establishing themselves as the new "chosen people" in a new "promised land" by subjugating the "heathens" they found there, history would be very very different. And now for a few parting thoughts about this book, on a personal level. I read "Pagans in the Promised Land" because I wanted to know more about the whole "doctrine of discovery"/"manifest destiny" thing - especially as it plays out in the field of law. I'm no slouch when it comes to historical study (it would be difficult to "pull the wool over my eyes"). But this book left me shaking my head and blinking to get the wool out as I realized that somewhere along the line an awful lot of "Christians" have been lulled into an alarming sense of "rightness by divine right"...and it plays out on every stage of life: social, mental, theological, etc. This in turn has given me as a United Methodist pastor, a profound distaste for ever using the argument "God told me to ____", and a newfound respect for the deep humility that MUST be central to a pastor's life.I found the core arguments of "Pagans in the Promised Land" extremely compelling. This is not a lengthy book (approximately 150 pages of text and 40 pages of footnotes and bibliographies - a solid thesis), but I found it necessary to put it down periodically in order to reflect on what I'd read.Who should read this book? Students of history, culture and race relations; folks concerned with social justice issues; those with an interest in legal theory. And ultimately, if it were up to me, I'd like every "Christian" to read it - really read it and engage with it and with others over it. It would provoke some excellent discussion in seminaries and churches, I think. If after considering these comments you decide to read this book, please do so with an open mind. Thank you.

This book led me to understand my own struggle being of white Christian ancestry and began my own healing.

This book is a game changer, very well researched, and laid out the doctrine of discovery very well and made it accessible for non-lawyers to understand the information.

Reading Pagans in the Promised Land has re-interpreted for me our history in North America. I am not Native American, but have become involved in their wisdom and truth after spending time with Indigenous Peoples, including Native Americans, at the UN. Around the world the Indigenous Peoples are communicating with each other and standing up to speak with one voice about their common beliefs and interests. Great things are going on.Right now there is an important convergence of interests among Indigenous Nations and others who love the living Earth and want to work toward restoring the planet's health. Pagans in the Promised Land has provided me with the context I need to sustain my activism. I love the lawyer-ly attention to detail and to getting things straight. There is truth to the analysis of metaphor in our shared history. I am grateful for this book and will share what I have learned as well as recommending it to others.Mary GilbertQuaker Earthcare Ministry

EXCELLENT BOOK

Pagans in the Promised Land is a text that posits the academic and legal truths about the "Christian Doctrine of Discovery." The text exposes the Christian roots that grow back through the "U.S. Supreme Court" toward the "Papacy" and "Holy Church," which reveals the self-evident truth that not all men are created equal from the Christian perspective. Moreover, the idea of separating the church from state in the U.S. is really an illusion. In fact, it is the "Christian Doctrine of Discovery" that U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice, John Marshall effectively integrates into U.S. and International Law for the purpose of expanding the "holy church's [and American]empire." In so doing, oppressing and dispossessing indigenous people and the Native Nations around the world of their land, property, liberty, freedom, independence, and basic human rights.Newcomb effectively weaves the understanding that Christianity is just a religious ethnocentric construct. A racist mind set that metaphorically places "The White Man's Imagination" at the center of the universe, making the white Christian "divinely" superior to all other races on the planet/universe, as affirmed by St. Peter in the Popes' Papal Bull documents. Therefore, giving themselves the self-proclaimed "divine" right to be the "Chosen People" to wage "Crusade" on ANY land inhabited by the non-Christian and thereby claiming those lands in the name of the Christain Monarchs. This book is a tough read for the Christian, but is a must-read for those wanting to understand the "Why" behind the ongoing oppression and genocide of indigenous people around the world.Pagans in the Promised Land is a book that will either scare you back into your narrow paradigm of comfort & hypocrisy, or shock your paradigm into shifting toward a greater level of enlightenment and causing you to challenge the fundamental ideas of liberty, freedom, justice, independence, and equality for all human beings.

Very well written and extremely informative. A must read for Indigenous Peoples.

I'd recommend this book to Native and Non Native alike. Met Steve about a year and a half ago, heard him speak about the contents of the book. The man is brilliant and the book is a reflection of many years of research and dedication. Definitely a must read. If you want to catch a glimpse of him, you can find Steve Newcombe on Youtube, in a 27-28 minute video about this topic. Enjoy!
