About the Author

Roger Kamien received his B.A. in Musicology from Columbia and his M.A. and PhD. from Princeton. Kamien taught for 2 years at Hunter College and for 20 years at Queens College, where he coordinated the music appreciation courses. In 1983, he was appointed to the Zubin Mehta Chair in Musicology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. You will NOT have access to the website needed to listen to the examples. I nearly failed a class because this didn't come with the proper study resources included in the physical copy.

Apparently the world’s largest empire of the time contributed nothing to medieval music or renaissance music. Neither Spain, it’s music or it’s impact on Latin American music or Medieval Latin American music are ever mentioned. We don’t need a wall when we have intellectual disparagement of a whole culture and language that spans the globe.

No matter what the customer service representatives tell you (and they told me the same thing twice), THIS BOOK DOES NOT COME WITH THE ACCESS CODE, which you must have in order to use it in a college class. The access code will set you back another $100 +/-. Consider buying a used copy or Amazon Book Rental, to offset the code cost.So that this review isn't completely negative: the book is very useful for propping open a door on a beautiful day, or on a cold winter's night to ignite your fireplace.

If you need to use this book for a college music class that requires the access code to listen to the music online, you're screwed. This book is way over priced to not even get what you need to complete your college course. Not getting this access code when I waited to receive the book forever has now put me behind in the class. Now I am having to go through the return process and still going to my college campus bookstore and buying this book again to actually get what I need.This was not noted in the description about the book and was definitely a rip off. DO NOT BUY!

Not only is it overpriced, I didn't get what I expected. The whole point of college students buying this was for the access code and they didnt even specify if it was included or not. Thanks for letting me waste my money.

Excellent textbook to accompany my music appreciation class last semester. The book is structured in an easy-to-follow format that begins by teaching the elements of music, giving the student a good basis of knowledge to learn about the musical periods.

It's a good history on music, concise, but provides a lot of good info. If you're taking MUSI 1306 please get this book instead of the overpriced one, unless your prof specifically asks for that (mine didn't) this will save you 100 dollars seriously and you can find all the music on the cover and back of the book. From there look up the music on Youtube people, this is some old music. They're available online. Save you moolah!

I've been reading tons of articles and watching YouTube videos. Much of this information can be found elsewhere, but not in such a comprehensive manner. The author does a good job of explaining the whys while not overwhelming a new spinner with too much information.

Just what I was looking for.I already knew how to use a drop spindles and I am researching spinning wheels. This book gives info on many types of wheels, how they work, as well as other aspects of spinning-plying etc. Great little book.

How lucky Ernie was to have to wonderful parents and to learn such important lessons from them to then pass on to his own children. I could only wish to have such loving, patient and encouraging parents and such a large, supportive family. It also touched me so much Cheryl and Ernie's selflessness both with expanding their own family by adopting and also being so welcoming to their children's spouses. Again, both my husband and I could only wish for such wonderful in-laws because neither of us experienced that acceptance. His book makes me want to be a better person and to change the patterns of my own family's nonacceptance and pointing out everything one does wrong no matter how much they do right.

This is an inspirational book and an amazing story, He’s literally changed lives for the better. If you are looking for a lot of insight into sports and/or inside stories about folks like Charles Barkley then you will be disappointed. My only minor compliant is while I understand the whole ‘blackberry’ concept, he tends to overuse it in the book. I would still highly recommend the book

I bought this book for a few reasons. First, Ernie is a Christian and he was highlighted on interviews such as Focus on the Family and Gospel Coalition. I also watched him speak on National Television about his faith during the Election. Second, I love basketball, and his hilarious entertaining show on TNT: Inside the NBA. Thirdly, he has children with special needs, in which I can relate, because my son has a disability. I learned of his son through the powerful ESPN documentary E:60 on Ernie’s life.As I read the book, I really felt I got to know Ernie on a personal level. His openness and transparency are very clear in his writing. At difficult and unexpected parts in his life: cancer, the lost of his dad, the adoption of his son Michael with severe disabilities, I found myself emotional. He writes of the true pain that each has brought, yet does not have a fatalist attitude in those moments. He accepts them with humility, and realizes either in that moment or after, that these moments are to be embraced. I am not the most emotional person, yet he is an emotional man, I felt his his emotions become my emotions as I devoured each page.After reading his story, I hope to have his mindset and humility. I highly recommend!

One of the most inspirational books I have ever read. It was a great lesson to me to examine the priorities in my life and to make changes where changes are needed. His perspective on life and family really hit home. I feel like I have become a better person as a result.

EJ is a man whose life represents the right ordering of priorities even when the "wrong order" of circumstances comes at you. No ghost writer here--he did all the work himself. Great storytelling, great life lessons.

This book is humorous, honest, self-deprecating and entertaining from beginning to end. A pretty easy and quick read, this book shares a bunch of different stories from EJ's life that are incredibly captivating and told in a straight forward manner. Ernie shares his faith in an approachable and humble way, inviting the reader to come on a journey through how he came to know God and along the way allowing the reader the opportunity to ask the same sorts of questions he was asking. I loved this book and it's great to get to know one of TV and broadcasting's most humble and talented personalities!

JM Redmann is by far one of great mystery writers. Her Micky Night series tackles many of the seedier issues of life that most will not touch. When a woman comes to her to find her daughter and this shouldn't be difficult but each clue leads to a dead body linked to a rich married woman with a string of lesbian lovers. The intrigue begins and Micky is in for a fight for her life. Like all mysteries there are many threads and Redmann sews so well.

Great book but the series number is wrong this is the 4th in series not the 3rd.

If you enjoy emotionally complete characters and multiple plots then you will enjoy this book·This book stands alone, but you might wish to start with "Death by the Riverside" and read then in order.J. M. Redman rarely disappoints!

I love the Micky Knight series! It is so well written, I couldn't put it down.

This fourth book in the Micky Knight series is extraordinarily balanced with multiple story lines that delightfully intersect and support the shared searches for lost daughters. There are also a disturbing number of murders that hit home and at the heart for Micky and her close friends. Micky is not only a key element in the searches, but uncovers the curious link that really ties all the murders together. Such a magnificent story that weaves back and forth between the harsh realities and delicate yet profound love of children and their mothers. Perfect!Micky Knight starts things off by celebrating her third anniversary with her love, Cordelia. That is an exceptional milestone and is given a wonderfully appreciative hats off to both women for achieving it. Very soon thereafter, Micky digs in on her assignments to find missing relatives for one distraught gay guy's need for his birth mother, one bereft mother in search of her daughter, and her own need to get some definitive answers about her mother. This is all happening while lesbian women are being brutally murdered, and an uncomfortable link to Cordelia's clinic seems to be a factor.Suzanna Forquet becomes an astounding touchstone for several of Micky's inquiries. She also puts a major move on Micky which certainly sends the sparks flying. Suzanna's husband, his all-round butler, and her neediness to stay far, far away from her desperately poor childhood makes her more than a fascinating counterpoint as she and Micky have several jousting-like encounters. I found Suzanna as intriguing as Micky did, but her fluctuating and compromised marital entanglements reveal a forlorn and shallow foundation that hints at a perilous and extremely fragile lifestyle. Fascinating!Several lives were shattered, a few people were blessed, and Micky is right in the middle of everything. I more than recommend this book for not only the delightful Micky antics, the hellish do or die concluding confrontation, but the brilliant touching reunions. Even more alarming, the killer seems to know too much about the victims. As the killer circles ever closer to Micky -- and the lost daughter she is trying to reconnect to her mother -- the coincidences become a grisly reality: the one characteristic all the victims share is that they dare to love other women.My Thoughts: This seems on the surface to share certain plot elements with book 2 - the murders occurring at the clinic being frighteningly similar to those made to look at botched abortions. However, the books are very different. The focus in the books is very much on reuniting mothers and daughters - Lorraine and her mother, Bourban St. Ann (a drag queen) with his/hers, and finally, Micky's search for her own mother. It was rather poignant, as I'm adopted myself and have considered many times whether I should try to find my birth mother or not.Micky's friends were very much on the periphery again in this book, which takes place 3 years after the previous book - unlike the first three, which all take place within about a year. We don't even see very much of Cordelia, who is very busy being a doctor. However, the book was riveting and I read it through as quickly as I could, only stopping for a brief nap when I got too tired to see straight. Highly recommended.

Another great read in the Micky Knight series. Not as mysterious as the previous books but it did answer a lot of questions. Looking forward to reading the next book.
