I read Great on the Job with the intent of using it as required reading for any new employee or volunteer of the non-profit I run, Partnership for Cures. While I was reading it, I ran across a number of items that I realized I didn't do a good job of in my own work! And I have incorporated them into my daily routine. I also found a number of things I was doing right, even though I hadn't learned it from a book, which made me feel pretty good. The first two volunteers (3 days per week, 8 hours per day) have read the book and they are doing a stellar job incorporating these lessons into their work! I am especially thankful for the piece about, "Don't go to your boss and ask if there is anything you can do." That creates EXTRA work for me when the volunteer is here to take work OFF my plate. So far, both of these volunteers have gotten that message and taken it to heart. They come to me with suggestions of what they can do, or requests to spend time learning about the organization so they can be more productive.I gave each of them a copy of the book to READ and give back. And after reading the Great on the Job they said they want to KEEP the book for reference and will buy me a new copy because they've marked up the copy I gave them. So what I thought was going to be an assignment, to read Great on the Job, that would mostly benefit me, it turns out the book was so powerful that the readers found it helped them!Kudos to Great on the Job. It is simple and it works!!!

This was a wonderful read so many helpful tips. Proper and clear communication is vital no matter who or where you work for in any profession and it is a shame that many do not even have the basics covered on how to do so. After reading this book, I feel confident in approaching multiple situations that before I was not fully aware in how to handle.

I bought this book because my SNHU book club had chosen it as our March 2018 book of the month. As I read it, I replayed past conversations in my mind and wondered how different the outcome could have been if I knew how to use GIFT and LEARN. Wish I'd found this book sooner. It might have saved me some trouble...

GOTJ has wonderful advice for common workplace conversations - both for seasoned professionals and soon-to-be professionals. I appreciated that the content is very tactical, easy to implement, and based on real-life experience. This isn't one of those books that makes amazing promises on the cover but then leaves you wondering what you really learned. There are even cheat sheets in the back of the book that can be used for quick reference. It's fantastic that someone is focusing on the skills that we should all be taught (but usually aren't). I've already recommended this book to the college students I mentor and will also personally continue to refer to it.

Some people are always calm, cool and collected. They never are at a loss for words and don't seem to experience those awkward 'where is this conversation going' moments. I am not one of them! Well, at least not naturally. I've had to work hard to acquire the right tactics for a number of professional situations. This book would have made it much easier. This book solves dozens of work-related communication challenges. Using incredibly specific instructions and relatable case-studies, it spells out how to up your game with grace and confidence. I was so impressed with how smart and actionable the strategies are and how comfortable the proposed language is - no one will think you're taking instructions from a book. Particularly helpful for me (as an entrepreneur) were the chapters on feedback and managing a crisis and your personal elevator pitch. I also sent copies to both of my brothers who are early in their careers and will inevitably need help navigating the workplace. I feel relieved knowing they have this great tool kit at their disposal.

I couldn’t put this book down. It provided stellar advice on how to navigate a number of difficult situations and conversations that I’ve struggled with at work for years. Wishing I had this book at my disposal back when I was starting my first job out of college!

Good book to guide on how to take initiatives, good examples

Really great book.

From the Back Cover

When I die and people realize that I will not be resurrected in three days, they will forget me. That is the way it should be. For reasons known only to God, I was asked to write an autobiography. Most people who knew me growing up didn't think I would ever read a book, let alone write one.—Lou HoltzFew people in the history of college sports have been more influential or had a bigger impact than Lou Holtz. Winner of the three national Coach of the Year honors, the only coach ever to lead six different schools to season-ending bowl games, and the ninth-winningest coach in college football history, Holtz is still teaching and coaching, although he is no longer on the gridiron. In his most telling work to date, the man still known as "Coach" by all who cross his path reveals what motivated a rail-thin 135-pound kid with marginal academic credentials and a pronounced speech impediment to play and coach college football, and to become one of the most sought-after motivational speakers in history. With unflinching honesty and his trademark dry wit, Holtz goes deep, giving us the intimate details of the people who shaped his life and the decisions he would make that shaped the lives of so many others. His is a storied career, and Holtz provides a frank and inside look at the challenges he overcame to turn around the programs at William and Mary, North Carolina State, Arkansas, and Minnesota. From growing up in East Liverpool, Ohio, to his early days as a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa, to his national championship runs at Notre Dame and his final seasons on the sidelines in South Carolina, Lou Holtz gives his best, a poignant, funny, and instructive look into a life well lived.

I had to get this book for work and overall I enjoyed it. However I don't think many non-sports fans/followers would appreciate the amount of sports analogies/references in the book...with that said if you enjoy Lou Holtz, sports, motivation this is the book for you!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I find it was very engaging, entertaining and is really packed with a lot of good lessons everyone can learn.

WHAT HE WAS ABLE TO DO AT EACH SCHOOL HE COACHED WAS REMARKABLE. I ENJOY HIS LECTURES, MAGIC TRICKS AND STORY TELLING.

My husband coaches youth football, and is a Lou Holtz fan. He said this book was extremely inspiring for him as a coach:)

The tv shows, the winning records, are nothing without the life story behind the person and those they've been able to touch. Tribute to a great life and a great personality. I never knew about his wife's struggles with throat cancer... truly inspiring. Good read, I hope you'll check this out.... worth the time.

I Love Lou Holtz. His life story is facinating and something to emulate. He truly has had a passion for greatness and he's truly lived a life worth living. I heard him speak a few years back and I'll never forget how funny and entertaining he was. Lou actually did a magic trick at one point. I always admired his humor and wit as a sports caster, but had no idea he had such a storied football coaching career and a robust life. I'm a Lou Holtz fan for life and I've already purchased this book for several family members.

Several family members have read this, and all give it 5 stars! A great read about this great Man!

Good book. A little slow at times but a great story about a terrific coach!

This is an Excellent book. I have wanted a book like this and now it has arrived. Patience pays off. It has everyone that you already know and ones I never heard of. Great compendium and character guide. Just like it states lots of info and a photo on each character. There are vehicles & spells inside of info. I couldn't ask for better.

I have been waiting for this book for a very long time. MOTU and (even moreso) She-Ra PoP were a huge part of my childhood. I had most of the figures and played with them all the time. Then, one day, the series was just gone. I never forgot about it and always missed it.Anyway, this book lists every character, animal, monster, artifact, and place that appeared in any of the various formats in which the stories of He-Man and She-Ra were told (books, magazines, comic books, mini comics, newspaper comics, animation, and motion picture...am I forgetting any?).With each entry, there is usually at least one picture. More prominent characters will have more pictures, usually one from each format, including their action figures (if there was one). There is a chart that shows where they're from, any other names they have, which side they're on, and their powers/abilities/weapons. Then, we get a brief history and description of their role in the stories and how they were portrayed across each medium. The book is divided into seven chapters: 1) Characters, 2) Beasts, Creatures, and Monsters, 3) Factions, Organizations, Species, and Races, 4) Artifacts, Devices, and Weapons, 5) Spells and Magic, 6)Locations, and 7) Vehicles and Transportation. There is also fold out page that features a family tree for the Grayskull royal family. The book is a hefty hardcover with no dust jacket, similar to the other books put out by Dark Horse. The cover features color illustrations of many characters in a battle scene. Inside, the pages are glossy and feature many color illustrations and photos. This book is essential for He-Man and She-Ra fans.

Ok, so I love He-Man and have purchased all the books - this is so much detail it's almost too much. C'mon - they have "Cow" as a listing from the cow that appears in the He-Man movie. I like lots of detail, but this literally has everything/everyone/every place that was ever in anything He-Man - and the authors apologized for not including some versions of some characters if those versions didn't differ enough from the original. I don't know how to explain the level of detail here - it burns the eyes!!

This is the guide we have all been wanting and waiting for since the start. Ever since the MV Creations Encyclopedia comics went unfinished this is an impressive replacement, though Val Staples luckily still got to produce it.A beautiful fit with the previous Dark Horse MOTU releases, this Encyclopedia is full of everything and everyone. If I had any complaint it is that I may have preferred not every little minor character have an entry, and to be sure it is not 100% every named thing in MOTU cannon...but I would not be surprised if it did. It's impressive and clearly an attempt at a definitive book. But at the end of the day I could have missed a large number of small paragraph booring human nobodies.Another small criticism is that though we have an art book I would have liked as close to a full body shot of a character when available. With such an impressive amount of entries I know that space was at a premium but as a visual person I would have liked to see more of the images and full body shots.Do not mistake explanation of personal taste as any real criticism however. Just felt it needed to be said. Point is if you care about MOTU at all, you need this book.

Great book for any He Man fan! I could lose myself for hours in this. I have to warn you, the book covers EVERY character that shares a connection with the He-man universe, not just the main cast. If you want any information on any character from the cartoons (every series!), movie, comics, and/or toys, this is the tome for you! Just give yourself a couple of weeks to get through it all...

Man I was so excited to get this book and I just was not as impressed as I thought I would be. For a massive, all inclusive, detailed, take no prisoners and hang on to the ultimate He-Man/She-Ra experience...the artwork....really sucked. I was trying to think of a nicer way of saying the artwork sucked but it did. I mean I hate video still screenshot pictures of cartoons in books because I mean come on, cant you guys draw them freehand into different scenes, type of person and I would of almost preferred screenshots of the cartoon. Some characters that were mentioned was just poor in their description. Queen Angelica I literally missed because I thought she would have a larger picture. Glimmer had a decent size page but I remember Queen Angelica fighting off harpies and being an awesome fighting Queen. Overall I think it could of been a lot better.

This is a completely thorough accounting of the flora and fauna of the MOTU mythology. Spanning from it's inception to this modern age. I am so delighted to both take a trip down filmation memory lane and uncover material from the past I was not exposed to. Just asuch attention was paid to the successive years into the present day. I hope other cartoon properties have these folks create similar tomes for them.

I was surprised at just how big and heavy this book was, but then again it contains EVERYTHING you ever needed to know about He-Man. From the cartoons, to the mini-comics, the movie, obscure news strips from outside the States... everything. There is not one piece of MOTU trivia overlooked no matter how obscure. A must have for He-Man fans.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—After attempting to commit suicide in her bedroom, Vicky Cruz wakes up in the psychiatric wing of the hospital. Exhausted and nearly catatonic, Vicky goes through the motions asked of her by the quiet but firm Dr. Desai while intending to stay only the mandatory time before going home to try again. After attending group therapy with the other three young people on the ward—her energetic roommate Mona, intimidating E.M., and angelic Gabriel, however, Vicky accepts Dr. Desai's help in convincing her domineering father to let her stay. As Vicky begins intensive treatment, things start to look up, but the looming question of whether she and her friends can survive in the outside world remains. Stork's latest starts slow, with a cold, dry tone that mirrors Vicky's own emotional depletion. As the new environment and people begin to reach Vicky, however, the prose follows suit, growing smoothly into a warm and powerful tone. Unlike many novels about teens and suicide, this work focuses entirely on recovery. Vicky is dealing with a deep depression born from her mother's death and learns not only to name her illness but to cope with the effects and stand up for her needs. Stork's depiction of depression deftly avoids the traps of preaching or romanticizing and instead is accurate, heartbreaking, and hopeful. VERDICT A beautiful read that adds essential depth to the discussion of teens and mental illness.—Amy Diegelman, Vineyard Haven Public Library, MA

This is not only a good book, it’s more than that. I think it should be a MUST READ for parents, teachers, counselors and youngsters. Potential spoiler review. It starts off AFTER a young girl tries to take her own life which important bc it doesn’t glorify suicide or focus one’s attention & instinct to blame. When things go wrong in our lives, we seek to understand & place blame somewhere. The reality is that most cases of suicide are NOT done bc of one single thing - it’s all those single hurts that add up until one can no longer hold on.While considered s YA book, it does an excellent job of explaining how a suicidal mind thinks. And those thoughts & feelings are not just the woes of teenagers; but rather shed light on the feelings of anyone who has seriously considered suicide.Given that suicide is the #1 killer of teens, this book is important for PARENTS to read as well. It gives the warning signs of a depressed teen (much of which can translate to an adult.) Teens and other suicidal people often talk about committing suicide, but not all do.Instead there may be s tendency to withdraw from the world. Vicki (main character) talks about the blissful silence she felt/heard before and after she takes the pills from her stepmother. (Keep such items locked away as teens are holding “M&M” parties where they bring in all the prescription meds found in their homes, mix them up in a bowl and, not even knowing what they are for, will take a handful!)This book is also about accepting ones feelings, allowing space in our hearts to grieve the loss of someone, be it a parent or friend. Our culture is so disconnected from death bc it has become “sanitized” by bright white hospitals and then the timeline on how long you’re allowed to grieve is on. Are you done grieving yet? Are you done yet? Done yet? Reality is that when someone loses a loved one, as Vickie lost her mother, one never really STOPS grieving. Instead we learn to live with it and incorporate it into our own personal stories.Suicide is a difficult thing to comprehend if you’ve never felt the hopelessness and loneliness that a suicidal person can feel. Often times, after weeks or months of displaying depressive feelings, they suddenly cheer up. That, on the outside looks like a good thing. But, it may also happen bc the suicidal person has a workable plan in place and the heavy, wet blanket that has been holding him/her down has been lifted as they accept dying as their way out.The ONLY reason I couldn’t give this book 5 stars is because Vickie’s “ recovery” takes place over the course of 3 weeks and she has a family supporting her to the best of their ability. Chronic clinical depression with a suicide attempt is not “fixed” in the span of 3 weeks and I wish Stork had somehow ended the story on a more reality-based scenario. Finally, if someone you know is talking about suicide, do NOT fall into the mistaken belief that s/he won’t do it. Do NOT leave that person alone and at the very least, take all medication and guns from the residence. Encourage them to talk about WHY they feel that way and ask how you can best be of service to him/her. LISTEN to what they have to say. Don’t try to cheer them up with worn out cliches or try to solve the problem right this second. Ask them to commit in writing that they will not hurt themselves in the next 24 hours. Repeat as needed until professional help becomes available.I believe that everyone could benefit by reading this book. It gives readers a lens through which they can experience the world of someone who is suicidally depressed. This is likely the single, most important book you will ever read.

4.5 stars, actually.I don't have direct experience with clinical teenage depression-- although I did watch a friend go through it in high school. Francisco Stork writes with great insight and sensitivity-- and here he takes on the touchy subject of a variety of mental illnesses with trademark sensitivity. But more than just presenting a realistic spectrum of the way bipolar, schizophrenia, and depression may shape teens, Stork gives us a bonus spectrum: a variety of Latino characters of various economic and immigration status backgrounds.Vicky Cruz is the third generation-American, rich daughter of an ambitious businessman, and she just tried to commit suicide. She finds herself in an emergency hospital bed attended by Dr. Desai (a female psychiatrist of East Indian background) and forced into group therapy every day.Only the members of the group become a source of support and acceptance to each other, and ultimately Vicky finds reasons to live intricately bound up with her relationship to the others in the group. We meet the group, they seem fine, they go to a ranch to explore their therapy a bit more-- and things explode. I really liked how Stork presented the characters in their more "normal" phases at first and then pulls the rug out from under you by showing how their illness flaring up can really mess up their relationships and lives. Mona, the bipolar, almost dies because she stops taking medication and becomes obsessed with her sister. Gabriel, presented more or less as the normal, wise one from the beginning, descends into a particular kind of madness that it would be hard to follow him into as a caring friend.Vicky manages it. She also manages to learn to stand up to her family's expectations and deal with the loss of her mother. So I know this is a novel. I know there has to be some kind of hope woven through the story. But I kept having to suspend disbelief about the nuggest of wisdom each character had, as well as the overall path towards wellness Vicky took (she didn't even have to take medication). Not that it couldn't happen this way in real life, but just that I wondered if there was some way to convey through the story the daily grind, the many moments of wrestling with illness that I saw in my high school friend in Vicky's story.Regardless, this is an important book for teens. It does a superb job of unpacking stereotypes about mental illness and latino culture.

I love Francisco Stork books and this fictional book about depression, suicide attempts, recovery and friendship was so moving. I also read this book as part of our May twitter chat we will have on YA/student instabilities they face 5/24 AT 8pm with #yabookchat. Vicky is a teen who has tried to commit suicide and spends time in a mental health facility where she meets and bonds with 3 other mentally ill teens- E.M., Mona and Gabriel. Vicky has a very supportive Doctor in Dr. Desai and a father, sister and step mom who do not understand why this has happened. As Vicky talks in group (gets to know her "friends"), and works in the hospital, she becomes more aware by talking and confronting her feelings that she suffers from depression. What I liked is how Stork shows Vicky and her family being totally shocked that Vicky was in fact depressed, did not understand what depression is, and how she must continue to talk and learn how depression can and will affect her and what tools she will need to keep with her to deal with this throughout her life. I liked the baby steps Vicky took to become mentally strong and how she continued to slowly look at the light and the sun as growth in her life and pledge not to be afraid or lonely anymore. I think this book should be read by all teens, guidance counselors, teachers and parents should read and learn from this book. Stork has taken his own experiences with depression and attempting suicide and woven a stark, realistic, and moving story about overcoming and living day to day with mental illness - highly recommended.

Review

In this volume, Hicks has delivered a sophisticated work of scholarship: detailed, insightful, deeply researched.... But the book has a much wider relevance, too, which it would be unwise to understate. Discussing, as it does, the role of profoundly structural gender discrimination in the collapse of technical dominance by a formerly great power, this book makes very uncomfortable reading – on a number of levels.―Times Higher EducationFans of the movie Hidden Figures may be interested in this scholarly analysis of goings on across the Atlantic, by an historian of science at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Her deep dive into 'how Britain discarded women technologists and lost its edge in computing,' the subtitle, is a sobering tale of the real consequences of gender bias―a problem that persists in many technical fields today.―Harvard Magazine...makes a detailed historical and symbolic case for suppressed and unvalued women talent, and bad management for a whole country in a strategical sector.―Neural, 1/11/19

Review

This is a fascinating account of how the UK civil service gradually but deliberately pushed women out of computing technology jobs over a three-decade period. It's one of the best researched and most compelling examples of the negative impact of gender and class discrimination on a country's economy.―Maria M. Klawe, President, Harvey Mudd College (2018-01-01)Marie Hicks's well-researched look into Britain's computer industry, and its critical dependence on the work of female computer programmers, is a welcome addition to our body of knowledge of women's historical employment in science and technology. Hicks confidently shows that the professional mobility of women in computing supports the success of the industry as a whole, an important lesson for scholars and policymakers seeking ways to improve inclusion in STEM fields.―Margot Lee Shetterly, author of Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race (2018-01-01)This is a fascinating and disturbing account of women's roles in the British computing industry's rise and fall. In its analyses of job classifications and campaigns for equal pay, this study examines relationships between gender and computing in far greater detail than previous accounts. Deeply researched and persuasively argued, Hicks's study of computing in Britain complements existing accounts of women's exclusion from the US computing industry―and offers important lessons for the tech industries of both nations today.―Jennifer S. Light, Department Head and Professor of Science, Technology, and Society, MIT (2018-01-01)Programmed Inequality is a model of socially informed history that reveals deep linkages between technological modernization and profound cultural commitments to gender binaries and inequities. It defies any intention we may still hold to interpret the development of computing as distinct from matters of power, identity, and democratic participation.―Amy E. Slaton, Professor of History, Drexel University; author of Race, Rigor, and Selectivity in U.S. Engineering: The History of an Occupational Color LineComputing is widely recognized as a male-dominated field, but how did it come to be this way? In Programmed Inequality, Marie Hicks illuminates how structural discrimination shaped the composition of the British computer workforce and created lasting gender inequalities. Clearly written and elegantly argued, Hicks's book is a must-read for those hoping to understand how ideas about gender, class, and sexuality became embedded in computing and how government practices and new technologies worked together to undermine social and economic equality.―Eden Medina, Associate Professor of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Bloomington; author of Cybernetic Revolutionaries: Technology and Politics in Allende's Chile

I highly recommend Programmed Inequality; it is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the forces that have shaped the contemporary STEM labor market. The book analyzes the history of computing in 20th-century England to demonstrate how labor history and gender history are inseparable, and to argue that structural gender bias ultimately hobbled British technological development. It is worth emphasizing the Programmed Inequality was written by a professional historian; they have been trained to carefully examine and weigh the evidence provided by primary source materials (such as newsletters, government documents, employment records) creating during the historical period being studied *and* to interpret that evidence in light of what other histories, historians, journalists, and other authors have written about the subject.Programmed Inequality is interesting, clearly written, and thoroughly researched. Hicks employs evidence from the British Library, the London Metropolitan Archives, and the National Archives (plus other archives), as well as from interviews, government reports, computing manuals, and abundant non-archival sources to show how - and why - British computing became male-identified. Hicks demonstrates how women’s contributions to British technology were devalued and minimized over time, in parallel with how the British government struggled to usher in a promised technological revolution to improve British society.Chapter One, focused on World War II, shows “why the women who worked with the world’s first digital, electronic, programmable computers had a critical, material impact on the outcome of the war” (13). Chapter Two traces how “women’s technical abilities dropped in value” after the war (13). Then, “in 1964, Prime Minister Harold Wilson initiated a ‘white-hot’ technological revolution meant to burn up inequalities within British society as it modernized the country” (14). That “White Heat” effort produced job opportunities for men and women, but only briefly, as chronicled in Chapter Three. Chapter Four explains how recruitment efforts soon focused on “career-minded, management-aspirant young men” while “high-level jobs were thought to be inappropriate for women” (14). Chapter Five shows the effects of this gendered, targeted recruiting: because “the government neglected most of its trained technical workforce” - who were women - and struggled to find the “ideal technocrat” candidates - deemed to be men, “these new hiring standards had the effect of draining training budgets and exacerbating labor shortages” (15). Hicks’ compelling conclusion applies this cautionary tale for high-technology workforces today.

If you've heard the fuss over women in tech, but you're still not quite sure where it's coming from, this is a great book for you. If you're an ally to the women in tech movement, but want to understand it better, this is a great book for you. Even as a woman in tech, sometimes I wonder, "is all this really necessary? Why are people so passionate about this?" This book lays out the history clearly. Through understanding the history of the rise of technology and women's role in it, it becomes obvious why "women in tech" is such a big deal.Right on the cover, Hicks makes it obvious that women in tech have business value, and that this book outlines what happens when they are not valued. It is a cautionary tale. An eye opening history. I think that everyone can benefit from the history in this book.

I checked this book out from the library because it sounded interesting. I was just one chapter into it when I decided I had to own it. I rarely purchase books but this one is definitely a keeper. It's a dense book, full of rich information, but is not difficult to read. It's obviously very well researched and the author does a excellent job conveying details. Highly recommended!

Incredible.

Thoughtful history that completely re-writes the narrative that tech is a male domain by looking at the stories of those who worked in the expansion of post-WWW11 computing in the UK. A must read for people who want to understand the relationship between culture and workplaces or want to understand gender and technology. Engaging, interesting and insightful!

I'm a computer programmer, so this book was right up my alley. But still, I was surprised how much I learned, not just about computer history. This book shows how sexism hurts economies and entire nations. It's sad how much it resonates with what's going on today. A good read for anyone who is interested in why computing is the way it is right now and why talented, smart women still aren't given their due. The reason for this is all about power and history, not about women not being "good enough." And, the British example is a cautionary tale for the US: if we want to avoid a quick slide into second-rate world power status we'd do well to learn from their mistakes. On the brighter side, this book has tons of neat photos and cartoons of early computing, and the ways that women were represented in the early days of computing are truly surprising. From satirical cartoons to topless bikini shots (really) you'll see women represented as experts, idiots, and everything in between. The personal stories of the people interviewed were also great. Way more stories about people being electrocuted (or almost electrocuted) by computers than I would've imagined!

I taught this book in a graduate seminar recently, and it is a stellar example of the best of a new generation of history of computing that pays close attention to people, politics, labor, and gender. In my mind you cannot understand the work and culture of computer programming --- past or present --- without understanding the remarkable gender swap that happens in computer work in the middle of the 20th century. Computing was originally women's work, and it was only later made masculine. Contemporary efforts to get women into computing are not working against the "natural" state of the industry; they are necessary correctives to a series of missteps (deliberate or otherwise) that forced many women out, and discouraged many others from entering. Marie Hicks has written a rigorous but highly readable history that should be on the shelves of anyone serious about learning the history of the computer revolution.

Several key issues have to be dealt with in this compelling medical romance, and having a happy future is very much in doubt if two people cannot overcome their tragic history. Past decisions play an important part in how things unfold, and how a couple respond to each other in the present that will determine whether they give love a second chance or once again go their separate ways. Robin Gianna has written a story packed with emotion, where hearts are constantly on the line. THE FAMILY THEY’VE LONGED FOR delves into how a traumatic event can either bring two individuals together or tear them apart.Right before Dr. Rory Anderson will perhaps receive an official job offer at the hospital in Los Angeles where she is currently working, she gets word that her mother had surgery to fix an unexpected problem. Though well on the way to recovering, her mom will need some assistance, so the pediatric orthopedic surgeon is going back to Alaska for a short period of time. Returning to her hometown is especially difficult, as she has much unfinished business with Jacob Hunter who is the community’s doctor. When Rory left, it was to escape the suffering and guilt that made living there impossible. Now there is no way to not see the man who will have her reliving memories best forgotten. With its unique setting, the story comes across as original and often interesting. The doctor in such a small town has to be ready for any event, and I enjoyed seeing what Jacob would do when an emergency occurred. This often had a number of aspects being different from what is normally depicted in a medical story, and it led to some of the incidents being carried out in a unique way. Alaska is certainly a fascinating place, and the author incorporated this fact into her book.Jacob and Rory feel much stress any time they have to be around one another, and a wide range of emotions are always felt because of everything they once shared. There were many good times while growing up, but one choice made by Rory while in college altered Jacob’s attitude toward her and his opinion has not changed since she left. While he may not be able to fully trust her, the longing that they previously felt may be buried but has definitely not completely gone away. This tension causes the couple to repeatedly clash with each other as well as struggle with what path to follow. Robin Gianna gives Jacob and Rory many obstacles to triumph over before there can even be a hint of a relationship, and I found THE FAMILY THEY’VE LONGED FOR to be entertaining with realistic circumstances.

The other day I was lucky enough to open my mailbox and find a copy of Robin Gianna's latest release, " The Family They've Longed For". Why was I lucky you might ask? Well it was because Robin Gianna is one of my most favorite authors and I devour her books, so getting a signed copy of her latest release is like manna from heaven to a reader nut like me. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into it!Though I was a little less enthusiastic by the note she included saying that she wrote it with a broken wrist and didn't have the time to polish it up the way she would have liked to....but after reading the book I can only say " If I could write as well as she does with a broken wrist I'd be happier than a pig in..... well you know what!"Pediatric surgeon Aurora "Rory" Anderson and her ex Dr. Jacob Hunter were two characters that were extremely well written, enough so that at times you hated them ( I'd even go so far as to say at times I hated them and Its at that point that as a reader you realize just how well written these characters were and that's thanks to Ms. Gianna's talent as an author. )Single Doctors reuniting with their loss loves after a decade apart might be like other books you've read with lovers reuniting but that's where the similarities end because these two suffered the unimaginable loss of their stillborn son and the inability to deal with such a tragic loss tore them apart. Years later her mothers health issues reunites them, both still single but now Jacob is raising a son of his own.You can't even imagine the tears I was shedding at this point and even though I wondered how they were gonna possibly be able to overcome their issues I was praying for them to even though in the back of my mind I knew they were just characters in a book and of course they'd get their happily ever after but the way Ms. Gianna accomplished that was no where near how I envisioned it would happen.(Did I mention before how talented an author Robin Gianna was? All you have to do is grab a copy of "The Family They've Longed For" and see for yourself. I guarantee you that once you do you will find yourself admiring Ms. Gianna's writing for a long time to come, luckily enough for me I already fell for her talent long ago so I'm not missing out and you don't want to either, trust me on that!If you want a romance to melt your heart to nothing but a puddle then run right out and grab your copy today because if you wait to long it'll be gone!

MS Gianna writes stories that go straight to the heart, they are moving, emotional and so darn good that I never want to put them down till the finish, and this one is no different, wow, set in Alaska one of my favourite places and two people who had been through so much and it is time for them to reunite in a gorgeous journey to a wonderful HEA.Rory Anderson grew up in Eudemonia a small Alaskan town and she loved it, she met Jacob Hunter in fourth grade and the two were inseparable, and friendship grew into lovers when they were at college together, both determined to be doctors. When tragedy strikes Rory runs away, takes off to California and becomes a paediatric surgeon, she lives alone and quietly, but she is needed at home as her Mum is unwell and Rory goes home to look after her, but going home and meeting up with Jake and finding out he is a single dad rocks her.Jake has always wanted to stay in Eudemonia, become a doctor have a wife and family but that wish is shattered when the love of his life Rory takes off, he stays makes good with most of his wish, he is a single dad to little Mika. Working at the medical centre he cares for Rory’s Mum and she is there to look after her, Jake is determined to not get his heart broken again, but when a snow storm has them trapped in a hut he cannot contain the sensual feelings for long, but it must only be for one night. This is a beautiful story of second chances for Rory and Jake, Rory coming home gives her a chance to finally open up about what happened and why she ran, and Jake finally gives in to trust her again, this one hits the spot for a romance that will bring all of the best feelings to the surface, there were tears for me and then smiles. I highly recommend this one don’t miss out, thank you MS Gianna.

“The game of baseball best represents our country’s soul, and no one has chronicled its beauty better than Roger Angell. With only class and eloquence, Roger’s insights have taught us all—starting with sport and extending to humanity.”—Joe Torre, Hall of Famer and four-time World Championship manager of the New York Yankees and MLB’s chief baseball officer (Joe Torre 2018-09-14)“Roger Angell is an American treasure. Fans of baseball and the craft of writing will enjoy this inside look at one of the all-time best.”—Tom Verducci, author of The Yankee Years and The Cubs Way (Tom Verducci 2018-09-14)“Joe Bonomo’s immensely enjoyable book examines Angell’s baseball writing through the decades, shedding welcome light on the forces and events (both in the game and in Angell’s life) that shaped him into the greatest baseball writer of the post–World War II era. It’s an absolute must for any Angell fan and for anyone who digs great baseball writing in general.”—Dan Epstein, author of Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America in the Swinging ’70s (Dan Epstein 2018-09-14)“Joe Bonomo has curated an enjoyable journey through the career and work of Roger Angell, the godfather to generations of outsiders who set out to bring a fresh perspective to baseball coverage. Ben-Naim goes up against the greats with common sense. A real eye opener whether you're a physicist or layman.

Is a catchy title enough to engage readers in a critical assault on popular books by authority figures with the stature of Stephen Hawking and Sean Carroll? Does a retired professor of physical chemistry have the credentials to scold beloved authors? Given his experience using entropy in his own field, Ben-Naim is quick to notice and criticize inaccurate, sloppy, imprecise, and speculative uses of that concept.Still, this book is a brash effort by Ben-Naim whose most popular book sold 4,000 copies compared to Hawking’s approximately 10,000,000 copies of “A Brief History of Time”. Professor Ben-Naim’s professional experience includes studying the folding of proteins and the anomalous entropy effects of argon in water but not cosmology. He does not share confidence in many of the mainstream ideas of cosmology including the Big Bang. Ben-Naim also asserts the entropy of the universe is undefined. For example, Ben-Naim writes “The reader should be informed that the Big Bang is a highly speculative idea based on extrapolating back into the past, using theories that might not be applicable to such an extreme state of the universe.” So it is no surprise that he criticizes authors who accept the standard model of Big Bang cosmology.Ben-Naim has previously written more technically detailed books on the topic of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics (e.g. Entropy and the Second Law). He has tried to bring rigor to an area that has become casual and careless. For example, he criticizes many of the common descriptors for entropy as inaccurate or imprecise. Describing entropy as “disorder” is an annoying scientific offense because there are many cases where this is not appropriate. Example: mix two distinct ideal gases from containers of volume V in a container of the same volume, keeping the temperature constant. The entropy change is zero despite the fact that the combined gas mixture seems more disordered.Ben-Naim’s precise definition of entropy is based on the more general concept of Shannon’s Measure of Information, SMI, which requires knowing only the probability distributions involved. When a system reaches equilibrium, the SMI is maximal; this is equivalent to the entropy of the system (up to a proportionality constant and switching to natural logarithms). If you apply the SMI formula to the Maxwell distribution of velocities and a random distribution of molecular locations at equilibrium, the result is the entropy for an ideal gas.In the preface of Briefest, Ben-Naim sets out four ideas he wants to convey to readers. “1. Time is basically timeless, and has no history. 2. Neither entropy nor the second law has anything to do with time. 3. The history of a substantial thing is a list of events occurring at points in space and points of time. 4. It is almost impossible to tell the history of an abstract concept such as beauty, a mathematical theorem, or time.”The first chapter reviews the concept of time and the pervasiveness of time in figures of speech. The point is that time is a challenging and elusive subject to analyze scientifically. The second chapter discusses in a critical way what is required by a “history” in general and of an abstract concept. He even includes a history of himself. His point is that the term has been misused in the title of Stephen Hawking’s two books. The two-page third chapter is “The Briefest History of Space”. Here he applies the points of the previous chapter to show how terse the proper history of a concept can be.Similarly, chapter four is “The Briefest History of Time”. It is three pages long. We find here an example of Ben-Naim’s style. On the question of whether one may ask what happened before the Big Bang, he says, “In other words, I think that it is meaningless to claim that ‘it is meaningless to ask about the time preceding the Big Bang.’” This might be a reasonable reaction, but where does it take the debate or how does it convince the reader?Ben-Naim reviews entropy and the second law of thermodynamics in the fifth chapter. It is condensed material from several of his earlier books. The real purpose of the book is the full frontal attack on specific books by Hawking, Carroll, and Frampton that is contained in the sixth chapter. He devotes many pages to A Brief History of Time, going chapter by chapter through it. On the Brief History of Time, the author concludes, “Over 90% of the book is irrelevant to the history of Time. This part is poorly written and most of it is incomprehensible to the lay reader. The remaining 10%, relevant to Time, is mostly meaningless and nonsensical.”Out of 187 pages in Hawking’s Brief, Ben-Naim counted 164 pages that do not mention Time, 21 that mention Time but are not relevant to the History of Time, and 2 that are relevant to the history of Time.Ben-Naim is similarly critical of Sean Carroll’s From Eternity to Here. Regarding Carroll’s essential thesis of the Past Hypothesis, Ben-Naim is mocking: “We do not know the fact (fact?) that the early universe began in a low-entropy state. This is not a fact, but meaningless, fictitious nonsense! This ‘fact’ and the corresponding Past Hypothesis appear so many times throughout the book that I felt I would soon start to worship the Past Hypothesis.”To test the reader’s critical skills, Ben-Naim provides ten quotes in the Epilogue to be dissected. The authors include Greene, Deutsch, Bruce, Schneider and Sagan and others. The Briefest History of Time should provide fodder for debate about popular science writing as well as foundational concepts and facts upon which our current theories are based. Ben-Naim strives to challenge orthodoxy like Ernst Mach did, but does so in his own mocking way.

Now, from the brilliant mind of Professor Arieh Ben-Naim comes a bold and powerful look at a subject we are all interested in: TIME. Through the ages, philosophers, scientists and physicists alike have tried to explain Time. Is it real or an illusion? Is it a substance or a thing? Can it be born or die? If so, is it alive or is that just plain nonsense? Can we travel back and forth through Time? How is Time related to the Second Law of thermodynamics? These questions and many others tantalize and stimulate our imagination. But where do reality and imagination meet? Ben-Naim provides answers while courageously, challenging the works of charlatans who twist science to sell their books. Ben-Naim rebukes and debunks their silly theories about time and entropy with REAL science. With great respect to US, the consumer, Ben-Naim’s book is actually about Time, not fanciful tangential fiction or some modified history of physics and cosmology! This is a fast pace, entertaining and exciting book. The illustrations are superb, quality printing and the elegant deep chocolate color of the cover make this a “must have” addition to your library. Students of philosophy and science finally have a fresh reference regarding Time thru the eyes of an exceptional intellect. Everyone who reads this marvelous work about Time will enjoy thinking about the concepts for weeks, months or even years. Please give this book a read and tell your friends also. Since this book uses real science, it is educational as well. This book is now my favorite Ben-Naim literary work and I’m quite sure it will become one of your favorites also.

What can be truly special in science happens when you find an authorwho sees things deeply while explaining very very simply.Ben Naim's books can be compared to Richard Feynman's classic"Feynman Lectures on Physics" which many people know asa wonderful place to learn about the true heart of nature.Although the topics Feynman discusses are powerful and deep lawsof nature, his explanations are straightforward and play well on the mind.Physicists and physics students who read Feynman invariably come awayfeeling refreshed and with renewed enthusiasm for thier subject.Feynman's writing and teaching were not at all independent of hisquest as a physicist - his desire was to gain as clear and conretea grasp on things as he possibly could. "To find out what the hellis really going on" seems to be the aim. Such a quest means puttingaside all preconceptions and truly gettinga top to bottom understanding of things - not simply remembering whatsome authority has said, but to know it for oneself. One gets the feeling that Ben Naim approaches physical science withthis same sort of honesty and openness. As Feynman's comprehension of Physics was deeper than just about anyphysicist, so Ben Naim has a profound grasp of entropy and the second law,as well as its relation to information theory. He has proven this in book afterbook, each one giving a clarity to be found nowhere else.Okay, then, you ask: `Well, why is entropy important in explaining time?' The answer is this:Entropy *is* important when considering the nature of time, since many authorstoday are making a crucial error and binding the two together in a confusing and misleading way.To learn the true relation ( or lack of relation ) between entropy and time,it only makes sense to turn to one of the top authorities on entropy, Arieh Ben Naim. And, in a manner similar to Feynman, Ben Naim goes to great lengths to makehis points as carefully and gradually as possible, adding style and flair to keepthe reader relaxed along the way.I once had a professor who said to us "Anything written by Feynman, you should read!"I would add that, for all those concerned with Entropy, Information theory andissues of the Arrow of Time: "Anything written by Ben Naim, you should read!"
