Great and beautiful maps. They are beautiful and Forester's tongue-in-cheek comments are fun to read. I am glad I purchased the hardcover edition where they are printed nicely on good paper. They would be disappointing in a trade paperback.The personal reflections that make up the second half of the book - meh. Forester's recollection on how the Hornblower novels came about may be an entertaining read, but the beautiful 30 maps that accompany Hornblower's career from lowly Midshipman to his final adventures in the West Indies made me dust off my old Penguin paperbacks and spend the weekend reading.

The maps are a great resource, although you could (and I have) print them out from Google maps and figure out where most of the stuff is (a lot of work, though). The really invaluable part is Forester's insights into how he created the characters and came up with the story ideas. Great stuff. I do think you would have to be pretty familiar with the series to really appreciate it, though.

A real Gem. As an aide to understanding the exploits and personality of this "legendary" figure, the book is invaluable. I followed Hornblower, my son follows Hornblower and the book is under wraps for delivery to him for Christmas. Can't wait to see his eyes ..... He is now 51.

This is an indispensable reference to the Hornblower books. I kept Google Maps open and displayed the appropriate maps and the Companion made sure I had the right locations. Reading on the Kindle (iPad) made it easy to keep the maps handy. This book served primarily to give geographic shape to the narrative.I also found Forester's confessions about writing informative.

My expectations were met and exceeded, especitally the section on Forester's writing methods. I liked the way he tied the differents sections of the stories with the locations and the maps describing the areas and the historical background of each one. Anyone interested in the Hornblower stories will find added enjoyment in this book.

I have the full series of Hornblower and I've really enjoyed looking up the maps in this Companion book as it just made things more alive and realistic.

Very good

Fast, easy, accessible way to start mindfulness. There are a lot of theory on mindfulness and there are a lot of readings out there that talk about the ideology much much more. However, this is great for on the go. And honestly, at the end of the day, it's not about how much you know, it's just about practicing mindfulness, which takes time, take practice to just get used to. I love the 5-10 min exercises just to get your day started and to take a break during the day. It's how I learned mindfulness initially, when I was just told to jump in. And this is helpful for that. No frills.

I am continually on the look out for small mindfulness type books and this one fit the bill perfectly. My grandson even looked through it and thought it might be something he'd like to read -- he's 8 years old! Gramma is trying to teach him the importance of quiet time each day and gratitude.

I was looking for an introductory book on mindfulness. This is it! In addition to the beautiful illustrations and wonderful meditations, there are also exercises to stretch both the body and the mind. This is a simple approach to a lifelong practice.

I really like this book. It gives you lots of ways to be mindful during your day. It gives you little exercises to do to help you become more mindful. I would read a little bit every day just to learn a little more. It has really helped me learn how to relax and become more stress-free​. I recommend this book to all my friends.

To stay present and calm and not slip back into thinking/worrying mode, we choose an anchor of awareness—a point of focus we direct our mind to.”“Mindfulness is being aware of or bringing attention to this moment in time deliberately and without judging the experience. So, when we go for a mindful walk we really notice every little detail and all we encounter—trees, cars, flowers growing out of small cracks, or a cat crossing the road—rather than creating to-do lists.”“When we procrastinate and distract ourselves with ‘busyness,’ we avoid engaging with the real thing—our lives… Living in the moment, and seeing everything afresh without judgment and worry lets us experience life rather than simply get through it.”“Simple mindfulness practices engage the mind and the body, helping you let go and slowly bringing you back to a sense of equanimity and peace.”A recurring theme is awareness of our breath. “By observing your breath, you can make such a difference to how you feel… Breath is life energy. When we restrict our breathing we diminish our life energy. Feeling agitated and indecisive is often accompanied by shallow breathing… Deep breathing expands the lungs which then send a direct message to your heart, which in turn starts beating slower.”As part of an exercise called the Table Top, Collard writes, “When inhaling, open your toes like a flower opening to the sunshine. When exhaling, scrunch your toes as if the flower is closing.” For an exercise called Body Scan, Collard instructs, “When you become aware of any tension or other intense sensation in a particular part of the body, ‘breathe into it’ and, as best you can, have a sense of letting go, or of releasing, for the duration of the out-breath.”The book also includes an exercise called Tune In. “Gently close your eyes… Allow sounds to enter your awareness and to let them pass, like clouds passing by in the sky: sounds from near and far, coming and going. Let go of labelling sounds—a car, a bird, and so on—because as soon as we label, we tend to get involved in stories, which trigger our left (thinking) brain, rather than our right (feeling) brain. All you need to do is be present to sound… You may notice thoughts arising. This is the nature of the mind; it tends to get busy, even when we don’t want it to. So, whenever you notice the mind wandering, gently and without judgment return your awareness, your mindfulness, to simply listening.”“Each meal of the day can be a call to mindfulness and gratitude. If possible, and without a sense of duty, recall how many steps were necessary to create, for example, the lovely soup in the bowl in front of you. Freely connect to the gardeners who planted and harvested the vegetables, the potter who created the bowl, the cook who prepared the meal. Really taste the dish and see whether you can guess how many ingredients went into it. The simplest meal can become a feast with a little ‘dash’ of awareness.”“Communicating with others is another wholesome part of the practice. Listen to yourself answering the phone or having a conversation. Are you mindful of how you speak and listen, giving space to the other person and choosing words with honesty but without the need to win or score points?”“Gratitude and appreciation help us turn towards joy and gladness, which create chemicals of well-being and peace in our whole body. Studies show that the regular practice of gratitude and appreciation, including writing down experiences you feel grateful for, can lead to better health, less stress and a more optimistic outlook on life.”“When the day is coming to an end, you may want to note down in a diary your ‘EGS’ of the day: what did you Enjoy today, what are you Grateful for and what are you Satisfied with? This could be something as mundane… Just a little action is enough.”Dr. Collard lists several benefits of mindfulness practice: Increased experience of calm and relaxation Higher levels of energy and enthusiasm for living Increased self-confidence and self-acceptance Less danger of experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, addiction or low immune efficiency More self-compassion and compassion for others and our planet.Mindfulness can “return our awareness to the childlike curiosity we all had when we were young. We may experience once again the wondrous qualities of natural life: a blade of grass, clouds in the sky, the taste of a delicious strawberry, the importance of surrounding ourselves with friends and others who care deeply for us. We remember all of a sudden that it is these little moments that are the true wonders of being alive. These glimpses of joy really matter, because they connect us to life rather than split us from it.”“Mindfulness is an attitude rather than a skill. Whenever we feel we have reconnected to the old treadmill of ‘autopilot,’ we may choose, if we wish, to step out and start again, making our everyday lives more pleasurable, and present.”

About the Author

Joseph Roth was born in 1894 in Galicia, an eastern province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During the First World War, he abandoned his studies in Vienna to serve in the Austrian Army. He wrote thirteen novels and numerous short stories and essays. Published in 1930, Job became his first worldwide success, followed by his magnum opus, The Radetzky March, in 1932. When Hitler rose to power, Roth went into exile in Paris, where he died in 1939. Ross Benjamin is a writer and translator living in Nyack, New York. His translations include Friedrich Hölderlin's Hyperion, Kevin Vennemann's Close to Jedenew and Thomas Pletzinger's Funeral for a Dog. He was a 2003-2004 Fulbright Scholar in Berlin and won the 2010 Helen and Kurt Wolff Translation Prize for his rendering of Michael Maar's Speak, Nabokov.

Alert: Spoilers are suggested, but not defined!I rejoice! I shout with happiness. I have found an adult novel with a glorious ending! Joseph Roth took a 180 turn from "The Holy Drinker," a despairing and depressing book, the first Roth I read several months ago (and reviewed), with this, a work of wonder, "Job: The Story of a Simple Man."Getting to the wonder, the joy, the miracle was an uneasy slug through one bad circumstance after the other, until about mid-way through the novel. What typically encapsulates man is his inability to act in a given circumstance, usually by birth. As in life, fictional characters are born, slug through life, and die--all in one setting, as if there is no world beyond.What sets "Job" apart and made this reader literally sit up and take notice was the family's move to America. What courage! What imagination to consider a world beyond a tiny Russian village! How unimaginable within context of fiction. I thought, Roth as creator is planning big here. If Mendel Singer is Job and suffers major losses as Job, how is he going to America? To what end?Let me begin at the beginning. Mendel has a wife, Deborah. They have had three children, all pretty much grown when little Menuchim is born. If the word "freak" weren't probably politically incorrect, I would use it to describe the deformed, sickly, pitiful child. However, both Deborah and Mendel love him. When one of their sons immigrates to America to avoid being drafted into the Russian army (and sure death), he succeeds and sends for his family. Mendel makes arrangements for Menuchim to stay behind.So, how does Mendel's story compare with Job's. One son goes into the army--lost. One son goes to America--lost. His daughter sleeps with Cossacks--lost. The youngest is deformed--lost. However, Deborah takes the child to a regional rabbi who pronounces a curious prophecy over Menuchim.In America--and this is the last of the story I will relate--the daughter goes insane, one son is killed, one son is missing, and one son's fate is unknown. Deborah literally drops dead. Mendel is so upset with God that he puts away his bag of prayer materials and swears off God. His friends come and have a biblical discussion akin to the Job story in the Bible.I was never convinced that Mendel suffered any more than any other human being. Oh sure, there are some humans who seem to lead charmed lives, but most of us live lives comprised of both gains and losses. However, Mendel is the subject of this parable, so Mendel I will consider. Although God does not restore all of Mendel's losses as He does for the biblical Job, the miracle He works is not to be missed. It's a mighty miracle which will cause the reader to stop and reflect: Can we explain the ways of God? Roth surely presents the miracle-wielding side of God, as if to say: When God performs a miracle such as this, His ways are clearly revealed, or at the very least, a compassionate side.

That Job is not mentioned explicitly in Roth's novella until nearly the end, when Mendel Singer has been tormented by misfortunes to the point of trying to "kill" God by burning his Jewish prayer shawls and scriptures. Then it's his neighbors and friends who make the connection."Job" begins in a village in Russia before the Revolution. The first few pages set the American reader of today up for another Fiddler on the Roof tale of 'städl' Jewry, and then for a realistic novel of immigration like 'The Bread Winners.' But Roth's novella goes its own way, into a poetic parable of grief. I seldom shed tears on the pages of a fiction, but I felt I might, as Singer's suffering reached its trough.In the end, the surprise that one has expected all along does occur. Honestly, if you haven't expected the 'miracle' all along, you're no kind of reader, so I'm not really 'spoiling' anything to tell you that Mendel will be 'exalted' and the beneficence of God will be reaffirmed. The 'surprise' for me, a skeptic, is that I'm amenable to such a conclusion, in fact that I'm profoundly touched with joy at Mendel Singer's spiritual resurrection.I strolled into a 'brick-and-mortar' bookstore some weeks ago, to buy one book at full retail price just to maintain some anachronistic loyalty to the act of physically browsing. I looked at the R fiction shelves and found a dozen titles by Philip Roth but nothing by Joseph Roth. I tried to point out the inadequacy to the owner of the shop, a guy who knows me well, but he merely shrugged. Joseph Roth, dear readers, is one of the giants of 20th C literature. 'Job' is a radically different genre from Roth's profound 'Radetsky March' - more a lyric than an epic - but it has all the subtle powers of characterization that make Roth so great.

This is my first Roth book but not won't be my last. He is a terrific story teller.

This book used as a supplement to my current text book is perfect. I made a great grade on my first critical care exam. I love this series.

The idea is great but some of the chapter are full of confusing words.Not many illustration or pictures. People who buys books like this are having trouble understating the ordinary books and buy something like this, expecting some illustrations to demystify the concept but this wasn't it.It's good for refreshing your knowledge for the price Amazon offers.

Nice as a refresher when you've been out of the game for a while.

Arrived it perfect condition and shipping was quick. The text is easy to read and gives an overall picture of each organ system. It breaks it down into basic anatomy, common critical care meds, disease processes that are seen with that organ system and what to do when your patient is not doing so hot. Downside is that there is LOTS of errors in this book. I used it for my critical care class in nursing school and the teacher said she would never use it again because it was wrong or didn't cover important issues on many occasions.

I'm an RN student, currently in my last semester of school. This is a great book in that it really helps to break down the disease processes in easy to understand format. The last semester of nursing school is stressful enough and this has managed to help make it a little less stressful!

We just returned from Scotland and the Rosslyn Chapel was one of our stops. This was a very wonderful and interesting place. The guides told us a lot about what we were seeing, but memory would not serve for long. I purchased two of the book offerings at the chapel shop. I looked at "Rosslyn Chapel Decoded" but did not not purchase it. Big mistake, for this book is by far the most informative and interesting of the three books. This book opens so many more avenues of thought and speculation about builders intentions. This was not a church, although it became one, it was a family chapel that was designed at the whim of its owners. So many mysteries about the different elements of the building that may never be solved. So many deferent religious elements evolved in the carvings in and outside of the building. I never would have known the real meaning of the beautiful carvings and secrets of this wonderful chapel with out this book. It will make you want go to Scotland and see for yourself .

What a fascinating read......amazing history (way beyond The Divinci Code fiction)......visited Scotland & Roslyn Chapel recently & having read this was a real advantage......you had real historical perspective of what you were seeing.....

I love the books by Alan Butler! His and his research partner's findings always lend new information to existing mysteries. The author just doesn't parrot the findings of others, he does his own research and comes to new and original conclusions. He goes the extra miles and effort to present new and interesting information on age-old mysteries. A well-researched book that sheds new light on the enigmatic Rosslyn Chapel.

I really liked this book. I enjoy the writing style of these writers. They tell interesting things about the Rosslyn Chapel. The idea about Mithraism seems a bit far fetched to me, it is very much speculation. That may also be because I never heard of Mithraism still being practised so late in time. The idea did inspire me to keep an open mind though. Thank you!

Not so much about each of the archetectural features and scultural pieces; instead, a comprehensive history of how and why it was built. Very interesting reading!

Enjoyed this book...I saw the documentary on PBS...and was intrigued by the story....the book goes in to more detail.....

Way back in 1977, I saw ads for the second Marvel Two In One Annual. I glanced through it at the time and in later years read about what happened thanks mostly to the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. Sometimes I would look for that issue, but it was either too expensive or just not available. Then, a few weeks ago, coming back from lunch, I popped by a local comics shop on the last day of a sale and had one of those wonderful "right place/right time" moments. I was able to buy the issue at a great price and it was well worth the wait. Soon after, while looking on Amazon, I saw that there was a collection of the 1970's saga of the mad Titan Thanos, of which my above-mentioned comic was the conclusion. I now had a chance to read this classic storyline and what a story it is. Thanos seems inspired from DC's Darkseid but soon he took on a life of his own. I have reviewed a few graphic novels featuring Batman villain Poison Ivy and I see parallels between her and Thanos; both are destructive, but there is a twisted idealism behind their actions. Thanos really believes that galactic extermination is the truest path to cosmic tranquility, not to mention a great way to impress his would-be consort Death (which makes me wonder if DC and Marvel did a cross-over, what might happen if Thanos met the conception of Death from Sandman? That would be interesting to say the least). For me, the best part of this book was the way it took me back to the 1970's, when I first started collecting comic books. I was not really into cosmic sagas then, being more a Spider-Man type, but the web-slinger plays a big role at the climax, reminding us why he's such a special hero. I also enjoyed the stories of Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock and principle writer Jim Starlin's skill at grand yet thoughtful stories. A most worthwhile volume.

Wow! I'm surprised of how good this book was!!I'm paving my way to Infinity Gauntlet, so it was only logical to get several Jim Starling stories. To be honest, I bought this collection because of the price and length of the book. And I won!!The best part for me was to get to know more of characters I never read before such as Thanos, Adam Warlock, Moondragon, Drax the Destroyer, Captain Marvel, etc. This is a GREAT collection to start since many important events happen here. I could even call this book "Infinity Gems: Beta Testing Stage", since Thanos is already scheming to get the Infinity Gems to make his "girlfriend" happy.You might get bumped because this is not an Avengers book per se. Is more of a collection of different individuals (Captain Marve, Thanks, etc) in which Thanos is the main threat. I found the narrative of the book very linear. At no point I felt lost, so if you are a beginner, take the word of a beginner... you can enjoy this book just fine.
