I am overall fairly pleased with Barron's SAT II Chemistry Prep book.While this book is very detailed and organized,it has some serious misprints and typos that often confused me.(for example, some answer keys were definitely wrong and some explanations were totally irrelevent.. I am not saying this because I am a chemistry-wiz; others have agreed with me on these problems.)With some major revision, this book could be a palatable review for SAT II Chemistry preparation.Pros: Nice, detailed review and explanations / provides a "study plan" which helps you to prepare for the test efficiently (start at least six weeks before your exam date!)A Diagnostic Test AND FOUR practice exams with answersWill go very in-depth as to over-prepare you for the SAT (which is not a bad thing)Cons: Typos, misprintsOverall, great for the price. I will update my review to reflect how I did on my October 2011 exam :DP.S. If you have paid attention in your regular (school) chemistry class, you will find this book easy to follow.
For SAT preparation, I have always been trusting Barron’s products and so far they never let me down. It makes studying really easy and nice. All the problems have explanation, which is perfect for students who want to study by themselves. Diagnostic tests are designed to show students how well are they doing so far and which part do they need to focus on more.Wise usage of this book ONLY, can guarantee a score of 800. It is very important to give yourself time and pace accordingly. If you start studying only a week or few days before the exam with insufficient chemistry knowledge, chances are, your scores will not be very impressive.This book, patience, practice and some time are the key elements in tackling SAT chemistry exam!Good luck!

Have you ever thought to yourself - I might be decent at chemistry? Well, after reading this book, it knocks you down once again, making you feel like you don't know anything. However, in the long run, I definitely helped me excel.
I think this is a good book if used along with at least one other book. I purchsed Barrons, Princeton and "Lets Review Chemistry: The Physical Setting" (blue book) for my son (after reading other reviews). I am not sure how good the review topics in Barron's are because son didn't depend on them much since he was also studying for AP Chem at school. But he said that towards the end of the book, some of the topics were too elaborate, they weren't covered in his AP class. He mostly used the book for practice questions and some times for quick review of topics for the questions he got wrong. So if this book is being used for review topics, got to be careful about which topics you spend time on (other peoples reviews helped a lot in this regards).Right after a chapter was completed in Chem class at school, son took the end of the chapter tests as well as other short tests. Difficulty level was o.k., I think an AP student should be able to do it pretty well. He couldn't finish the tests in an hour and also he scored around 750 in the practice tests. But he scored 800 in first attempt, but again it was at the end of the school year when he just finished AP Chem class. He also practiced the real test from the college board book which I think is a must for any SAT test.
Bought this for my daughter who's a straight A student. This book did not cover enough.The actual test is really a speed test and I don't think this book really helps.
I have a similar feeling about all Barron's test prep books. They contain all the information you might ever need to know to pass the test, however it is presented in a bland and uninteresting way that makes the book difficult to read in long sittings. The included practice tests are much harder than the real test, which is helpful to know but can be discouraging. There isn't much difference in subject matter between this book and the AP Chemistry book.
I took the chem SAT after using this book and got a 740, which isn't bad. This book has a great review of the simple things, however, the end of the book goes waaaaaay too far into detail. The electrochem and nucleonics chapters are in so much detail, that you could spend hours and hours studying every tiny thing, when almost nothing show up on the test in those chapters. After learning Ox-Redox and Organic, you should spend the vast majority of your time in the first 8-9 chapters. Pay particular attention to the areas on solutions, acids and bases, and molarity/molality concentrations. Just be careful where you spend your time with this book.
