I’m giving three stars because the book is well written. By that I mean good grammar and good sentence structure—skills that should be assumed to exist in published writers but which are noticeably missing in all too many writers, whether e-book mystery writers or even in respected national publications. So, I want to reward and encourage those skills. Generally, I think Scott Pratt writes clever, engaging plots with a textured storyline and well developed, internally consistently characters. I found this book weak in those areas. Which leads me to my biggest problem with this book: frankly, I really don’t like the protagonist. To oversimplify, granted Darren Street lived through many unjust horrors and bore the resultant scars, I nonetheless found him to be a self-indulgent, unempathic parent and an uninsightful hypocrite. That makes it hard to enjoy a book, and I thought numerous times of not finishing the book. I’ve read and enjoyed all of author Pratt’s Joe Dillard books and will at least start the third Darren Street.
Scott Pratt delivers another nail biting suspense novel full of twist and turns. I have read all his books, The Joe Dillard series, and now the second in the Darren Street series. He always gives the reader a cast of characters that are interesting to read about even if they have small parts in the plot. If you have already read the first book in the series then it is easy to see how Darren turns out the way he does. He literally went through hell and back in the first book and now it is his time to get some revenge. People are out to get him and he admits that the people he represents in court are not upstanding citizens but he feels it is his duty to make the government prove their cases by the book. Someone tries to blow him up in his house but he was not there. However, his house was blown up with his mother in it. Then his x-wife takes his son and moves away. His fiancé breaks up with him. and he has know one. His life has spiraled out of control and people are dying....How will Darren get his life back? Will he be going back to prison? Will he be killed? Who will turn on him that he trusted? Great story and I could not put the book down. Long time waiting for this book and glad the author has given us another great read. Highly recommend this book.
I gave this book 3 stars mainly because it was well-written and well-structured. If I was rating the story itself and the characters, I would not have given more than 1 star. The main protagonist, Darren Street, is one of the most unlikeable heroes in any book I have read. He perpetrated senseless violence, was self-obsessed, arrogant, remorseless when he did perpetrate violence, caused emotional pain to his son and exhibited narcissistic qualities with the women in his life. Usually a "villain" is portrayed with some characteristics that make him understandable, if not likeable. This was not the case with Darren Street. I had already bought the 3rd book in the series but could not bring myself to pick it up after this one. I have read other Scott Pratt books and enjoyed them but must say, I am amazed at the number of reviews which thought this was enjoyable. It makes me despair at the apparent desensitization to unnecessary violence. I don't mind gritty, hard-hitting books but this one, frankly, made me feel ill. Again this is not about the skills of this author, whose other works I admire.
I love Scott Pratt's books! I wish he could write them as fast as I can read them. He's a very talented author and my new favorite. I love the Dillard series too!
I confess, I've become a Scott Pratt groupie. He is an easy and entertaining read. It's kind of hard to write a review on this novel without giving too much away. Suffice it to say, it is certainly a different plot than previous novels. Still his character development is superb. You will be confronted with your own moral decisions. What would you do in Darren's position? Can't wait for the next installment in both this series and Joe Dillard.
I really took my time on this one, as I've learned my lesson. I came very late to the Scott Pratt party. By the time I got my first Joe Dillard book, Scott had only 1more soon to be released book. I read voraciously, going through the books like a drunken sailor goes through bars on leave; I read every spare minute I had and way into the night, as if the books and the words would never end. Then they did, and I was so bereft, no other author could satiate me. So, I waited and waited, and this book finally came outI tried to just read a couple of chapters a day, but what can you do? This one was just so different and the messes Darren gets into so complex. I couldn't wait to see what would happen next, and absolutely nothing was predictable. And, as that goes, the ending, while it completes this book, only left me hungry for more, and it seems I'm going to have to wait until next year. NEXT YEAR!!! So, I shall wait not so patiently for the next Joe Dillard book, which I hope will be out this year.I very highly recommend this book!
