Chapter 1I stood on the avocado green carpet of my living room in Uniondale, Long Island. My mom, Ellen, walked out of her bedroom, carrying an overnight bag she had just packed. Our house was a one-story ranch, and I watched her as she inched down the hall toward the living room. She stopped just a few steps from me and bent down, practically kneeling on the carpet in her dress. She always cared about how she looked, no matter where she was going. "Come here," she told me. I was five years old and she wanted to tell me something face-to-face. I walked closer. She hugged me and said, "Mommy isn't feeling very well. I have to go away for a couple of days."I knew she cried a lot. I knew she screamed a lot. And I knew people didn't do those things unless something was wrong. I thought she was physically sick and going to a hospital to get better. My older brothers, Anthony, who was thirteen, and Steven, who was eleven, stood next to her. They knew what was really happening. So did my aunt Maryann, who had come over to watch us that afternoon. When my mom let go of me she stood up, smoothed down her dress, picked up her bag, and followed my dad, Sal, out the front door. They were headed for the psych ward at Syosset Hospital. My parents met in 1947 at Webster Hall, a dance place in Manhattan. He was twenty-two from Little Italy; she was twenty and from Bensonhurst, in Brooklyn. "He walked up to me and asked me to dance," my mom once told me. "I told him, 'I heard about all you fellas from Manhattan. You're all a bunch of gangsters.' And he said, 'Yeah, I checked my gun at the bar.' I thought, how sarcastic. That intrigued me."My friend Anne thought he was so cute-he reminded her of Humphrey Bogart. He had on a pin-striped suit and really did look like Bogart."My mom was stylish, had a big smile, and loved mugging for a crowd or a camera. In every picture I have ever seen of her, from when she was young to today, she looks happy. There was never any sign in her eyes of the trouble behind them. On Saturdays when I was growing up, she'd spend three hours at the beauty parlor getting her hair colored and cut and then would sit with rollers in her hair under one of those huge dryers. She even had a cape and a hat that made her look just like Marlo Thomas in the opening credits for That Girl. She always liked to keep up appearances. That was true when she was growing up in Bensonhurst, too. Her parents came to America from Sicily and Reggio Calabria when they were both kids. They met in Brooklyn and had seven children over fifteen years. The oldest one, Aunt Josie, was nicknamed the General, because she did a lot of the child rearing. My grandmother worked as a seamstress and my grandfather was a construction worker (my aunts and uncles say he helped build the Empire State Building, but I think people say that about every construction worker from back then). My mom was the baby of the Cotroneo clan. The whole family lived together in a multifamily apartment building my grandfather owned. But my mother didn't grow up rich. My mom likes to tell the story about how she wore nothing but hand-me-downs and had to put cardboard in her shoes because the soles had holes in them. She worked at Macy's while in high school and she'd bring her check home and hand it over to her mother, who cashed it and took all the money, except for a couple of bucks she kicked back to my mother.None of the Cotroneos moved out of the building until long after they were married. Newlywed kids lived in one of the building's apartments until they could save enough money to buy a place of their own. Of course, most of them didn't move very far away. I had an uncle who moved to Los Angeles and an aunt who lived near us in Uniondale. Everyone else settled within a quarter mile of each other in Bensonhurst. Growing up we went to Brooklyn at least a couple of Sundays every month for huge Italian family dinners, the kind that began at three in the afternoon and started with three or four kinds of pasta piled with different meat sauces. That's when my aunt Angie, who probably never set foot outside Brooklyn, used to say to us, "Brooklyn is the best place in the world. I don't know why anyone would want to live anywhere else."As close as they were, my mom's family loved arguing. It was like they couldn't stand to be too far away and then couldn't stand the sight of each other. Chaos reigned at those family meals. My father called them the Fighting Cotroneos. His family was different. He grew up in a railroad flat in Little Italy, on the corner of Mott and Hester. His family was quieter and a little sadder. When my dad was small-"Too small to remember all the details," he once told me-he had a one-year-old brother who died from a throat infection. The funeral was held in his parents' apartment. My dad was always in great shape and kind of looked like a low-level hood. There's a great picture of him and my mom from their wedding in 1951. They both have ink black hair-hers is down to her shoulders and his is slicked black. He's got on a double-breasted black tuxedo with a white tie-he was a dead ringer for Yankees shortstop Phil Rizzuto. They were both rail thin, but my dad had butcher's hands. Thick and strong. He wasn't afraid of a fight, either. There was always tension with the Chinese where he lived because Chinatown and Little Italy are basically right on top of each other. One night he got into a fight with a kid from across Canal Street-which separates the two neighborhoods-and beat the crap out of him. A week later my dad saw the kid again, only this time he was in the back of a police car, pointing at him. Two cops got out, picked my dad up, and arrested him. He ended up spending the night at the Tombs, which is what they called the jail in lower Manhattan. It deserved the nickname. My dad was pretty smart. A junior high teacher recommended him for Stuyvesant High School, one of New York City's top public schools. "But I was always goofing around with kids in my neighborhood, so I dropped out. Never graduated. You weren't supposed to know that," my dad once told me when I interviewed him for a family history video. He wasn't a thug-but he lived on the periphery of the mob that ran Little Italy. And he liked to gamble. Even though he grew up on the Lower East Side, my dad loved the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1951, when Bobby Thomson of the New York Giants hit a game-winning home run to beat the Dodgers for the National League pennant, my dad lost a shitload of money. He was listening to the game on the roof of his building and was so upset he threw the radio over the edge.Years later, I was signing autographs at an event and Giants hero Thomson was there, too, right next to me. I told him that story so he signed a picture for my father, which read, "To Sal, Sorry about the radio, Bobby Thomson."My dad knew enough about gambling and the guys running the rackets in his neighborhood to know it wasn't the life for him. When World War II started he had just dropped out of high school so he decided to join the army. For more than a year he moved through the United States, training at Fort Dix in New Jersey, then in Illinois, and finally in Hawaii, "for jungle training," he said. When he finally shipped out to fight in the Pacific he thought he was headed for the Yap Islands, but the officers on the ship announced that plans had changed. They were headed for the Philippines. My mother later told me that when the two of them went to see Saving Private Ryan it was harrowing; it put my dad right back in the war. He was seventeen when he landed in the Philippines. Unreal. When I was seventeen I was reading album liner notes trying to figure out who played horns on a Bob Seger record. My dad told me, "It was just like that movie. Guys were puking as they bounced around the waves. Then the front of the boat comes down and we run into the water and it's just every man for himself, guys were being killed right next to me on the beach."He spent his war on the front lines as a medic, even though he hadn't even graduated from high school. It didn't matter. He wasn't doing battlefield surgery. His job was to patch someone together quick so they could stay alive long enough to get attention from the real doctors. Medics didn't have the option of ignoring it when one of their guys was screaming. No matter how bad the gunfire, they had to get low and go. And they were constantly under attack. "Banzai attacks," my father called them. They happened at night. "You don't hear them. It was hand-to-hand combat with bayonets. Every hill, every village was a battle."There was one firefight he remembered that went on for two straight nights. They were under heavy attack, and my dad was in a foxhole when he heard someone yelling, "Medic! Medic!""We were dug in and the Japs were dug in and we were shooting at each other," he said. "Our men were hurt in the middle of no-man's-land and the officer called for me. I crawled out there, bandaged them up, gave them sulfur, and dragged one guy back at a time. I couldn't stand up because fire was coming constantly. It's all luck, who lives."For that he earned a Bronze Star. Not that he wanted to discuss it. Ever. I remember when John Kerry was running for president my dad saw him on TV and said, "I don't like that guy." I asked him why and he said, "Because he's always talking about his medals." This was when the Republicans were claiming Kerry hadn't earned his Vietnam honors. I said, "Dad, he's being attacked. I thought if anyone would be on his side it would be you." But my dad said, "I don't care. You don't talk about it. Talking about it is wrong."Later in the war, while in Okinawa, my father's unit was under fire and an artillery shell exploded above his head. A piece of shrapnel pierced his backpack and became embedded next to his lung. They shipped him out to a hospital, performed surgery, let him recover for a month, and then shipped him back to the front lines. "As they were giving us new w...

As a superfan of the Howard Stern Show, I read every book every staff member writes. I moved to a new city and didn't have a library card, saw this book CHEAP on Amazon and just bought it. It's ok. It hits the highlights of Gary's life and career....tells how he got the job at the HSS, talks about the infamous first pitch, the love tapes and all that stuff that die hard Stern fans will remember. However, it seems to lack any real depth. He jumps from topic to topic, which are not even related to one another...and even skips around with time. You'll be reading a chapter about something that happened at the HSS, and the next chapter he's talking about being back in college....just weird. The part about his brother dying of AIDS was heartfelt and I could feel the pain of losing his brother. I'm sure that wasn't easy to talk about. Also, you come to find out his mother was just kinda "out there" from his early childhood. It's a good peek inside the inner circle of Baba Booey...I just wish it had been better written to flow more smoothly from childhood>>adolescence>>young adult>>adult>>Stern Show.

I never really knew much about "The Man Behind The Booey" but after reading this book I have a greater appreciation for him. Great stories about his childhood, family and love life (some pretty embarrassing) and a great understanding as to how he is able to work with the way that Howard Stern treats him.

Obviously I am a huge Stern fan. I think you would have to be @ least a long time follower to enjoy this lighthearted book. However it has moments that could seriously bring a tear to your eye. Yes, he does have silly lists of songs etc. etc......but that's what makes him Baba Booey! It does have moments about his dysfunctional family (And I mean dysfunctional). The one thing you will learn that Gary Dell'Abate is a very fortunate man to have survived his upbringing. I am not ashamed to say that I enjoyed this book because you will laugh your ass off & realize how loyal Howard Stern is to his employees. The front he puts on is misleading. He has been loyal to Gary, Fred, & Robin & knew he had the chemistry he wanted. I have personally spoken to other producers that rave about Gary & his kindness & that he is very good @ his job. Buy a used copy for a penny & give it a read.

Let me put my review in context. I'm a casual Howard Stern fan, having always found him (and the rest of the gang) funny but having also not listened to them in years. Love the movie Private Parts, but not in the diehard fan camp. Maybe that's why I was happy to read this book in its own terms and didn't need it to be more about the show than it was. I feel there was a fair amount of time spent on the show, but this was more a story of his family, growing up, and how he ended up working for Howard.A great deal of the book was about his mother's bouts with mental illness and how it shaped him, as well as losing his brother to AIDS. I think you have to come to this with compassion in order to enjoy it and with an understanding that what happens on the show isn't real life. Anyone who comes to this wanting it to be about the show, will only be sporadically happy, but I found it pretty interesting. The co-writing, Chad Millman, did a nice job making it sound like Gary's voice, or my understanding of his voice over the years. While I wasn't blown away, I felt that the book accomplished what the author(s) set out to do. Gary comes across as a pretty sincere guy.Parents who are degrees of crazy are familiar to a lot of people. Growing up, even in a good home, is necessarily about being at the whims and moods of your elders and their ideas about child-rearing and so I almost always sympathize with stories about growing up. It started with Mommy Dearest and still persists. I also see why he's had a job so long on a show in which mood swings make for good radio when other people would have slipped out the door. The cover is pretty funny, but I almost wonder if it mislead people into thinking it was going to be a different type of book, along with perhaps some preconceptions. I found it to be an entertaining and interesting read. I also thought the note of "be careful what you wish for" concerning perfect parents at the end was well-handled and relatable to a lot of people.4 stars.

I really enjoyed reading "They Call Me Baba Booey," although it does often feel like a final draft more than a finished product. Blame for this could be placed on Chad Millman who really does not seem to make a consistent effort to put Gary's words into actual prose. A lot of the writing literally feels like a computer program simply reciting what Gary is saying as opposed to a writer trying to fine tune it. In this case, Gary should've just written it himself and had a really good editor step in and improve it. Otherwise, Millman should've stepped up a little bit and made it a smoother read. That criticism aside, there is a lot to like in this book. Gary has an interesting story growing up with a mentally unstable mom, a stoic italian world war II vet father, an older rebellious brother, and another brother who contracted and died from AIDS before the world really knew what the disease was about. In addition to those parts of the book, Gary's recollections of starting out in college radio, working various jobs on Long Island, and eventually getting the NBC job that would lead to Howard are all very entertaining. His recollections of the disastarous Mets picth in 2009 as well as the love tape he sent to his ex are really worth the price of the book. Those two sections are pretty perfect. It's the more mundane stuff that seems to come off as sloppy writing that is too casual for its own good. Again, not a huge complaint, just a shame that a little more time was not spent on the editing.A listener of Stern since '89, this really is a must for any fan...even with all those stupid, pointless lists!

great book about a great guy - as a fan of the howard stern show i of course want to know everything i can about anyone involved with the show - this was a well written book and it has added so much to the show that i will forever be thankful that gary wrote it

Its a bit more than a typical coffee table book, the text portion is worth reading too. If you can put asided the memories of 1979 you will like it.

Wonderful book with lots of photos. Photos well described, big, showing the life of Iran as it is. Text is well done too - chapters are arranged geographically with interesting information.

THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL BOOK, FULL OF INFORMATION AND GREAT PICTURES ..RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN SEEING MORE OF IRAN ..

Beautiful photography. Well done. My wife had been in Iran as a teenager and so I got it for her. She loved it!

This coffee table book meets my standards for the genre: quality and size of photos, sturdy paper, a minimum of text and a balance of people culture and scenery.I like that it is geographically arranged. It starts with a map showing the country and its many neighbors. There is an introductory paragraph for each area's chapter.Coffee table books should have big photos (so I think), especially now that we can see small ones on the internet, and this book meets that criteria. There are several double page shots of city and country scapes. On the negative side, the chapter introductions are on black paper, which pulls down the photo on the opposite page and makes the text, no matter which color is used, hard on the eyes. While I am not a good judge of what the balance of content should be in a book on Iran, two things were missing that I did want to see depicted. One is North Tehran, not only a streetscape, but how the women there dress (presumably more stylishly?) in public. The other, the remembrances for the martyrs of the Iran-Iraq War. I understand there are elaborate memorials and would have liked to see one or two.

The breadth and scope of text and photos are remarkable. The sights are memorable, the insights unforgetable.

I just gave this book as a gift to a new mother. We used this book with our kids, and my wife and I thought that Dr. Brazelton's approach was very common sense and helpful. He covers lots of topics that we would never have thought of, and you can just feel how loving and kind he is in the way he describes the development of children. Helped us not to overreact too much. I know lots of young parents look for everything on the internet nowadays, but I think having a book available is a really nice resource. I'll probably buy it again for other young parents.

As a long time psychiatrist myself, I have seen many guides to understanding infants /toddlers / beginning childhood primers way back to Dr. Spock!Brazelton is the perfect synthesis of excellent pediatricics and psychiatric technique.“Touchpoints” are perfect expressions of what he achieved through presenting the normal development of children eith varying personality styles and the resultant responses elicited in parents of these normal children (often vice versa),Ultimately, the overriding message is that children are compelled through certain growth steps and problems, and that parents should not see these as personal fights or severe signs of abnormality. In this day of “ spectrum disorders gone berserk” Brazelton reads better than ever!

This is actually the second copy I bought of this book. I loved it so much I bought it for another new mother as it has helped my greatly as a new mom. It was recommended to me by my pediatrician and has been spot-on with my daughter’s development. I quote it to my husband regularly much to his slight irritation. A great read!

Around 11 months, my kiddo started becoming obsessed with walking, but he lacked the balance to even stand on his own. Consequently, he screamed all the time. He was inconsolable. It was awful. I took him to the pediatrician, who was concerned he had an ear infection. When it wasn't that and he seemed otherwise fine physically, she recommended this book. I read the chapters on 9 month and 1 year olds, and it was like Dr. Brazelton was describing my kid. He talked about how some kids become so fixated on walking that if they're not walking, they're miserable. It's a phase and they grow out of it, especially if they do start walking. I felt such relief reading this! The book is divided by months and stages. It's very clear and calm, and did not make me feel like an inadequate parent failing my child (as a lot of parenting books seem to do). I find most parenting books to be condescending and pressuring. I did not find Touchpoints to be this way. I found Dr. Brazelton to be a source of calm--if I could have him as my kid's pediatrician, I would jump at the opportunity!

This is a fantastic book to read as your child grows and changes. I bought this copy for a friend because I love my own so much. Brazelton outlines what to expect in the cognitive, emotional and physical development of your child within ranges of ages because, as he notes, all children grow at different rates. I appreciate the down-to-earth yet professional tone used and I will and have recommend this book to many friends and family members.

My good friend gave me her copy of Touchpoints when my daughter was born. This book is amazing. Brazelton is always spot-on in his predictions. One example is in the 2 year old section where he says the kids will walk into the exam room like they own the place. I read that part at around 18 months and my kid was shying away at that point. I thought, 'There's no way she'll do that.' Fast forward to her 2 year checkup and sure enough, she walks in like she owns the place.I like his advice and his overall attitude. The potty training advice is some of the best I've seen and I've read a lot of baby/kid books. This is tops on my standard baby shower gift list.

This is very useful for understanding infant behavior. Some of the material is outdated, such as advice to delay introducing common food allergens. I would suggest conducting additional research before following the advice given.

I love that Dr. Brazelton can explain childhood from a child's eyes. Reading his books has helped me understand why my son acts a certain way from his perspective. I don't know that any other 0-3 book does that. Every time my child was in a stage that was frustrating, I would pick up this book, and sure enough, he would explain why my child was acting the way he was. It has helped me understand my son better and not get as frustrated. My other greatest lesson from this book was that very young children go through transition/adjustment periods. When I would get frustrated with a behavior, I learned to wait through it, knowing it would get better in a short period of time. Dr. Brazelton gave me hope, encouragement and lots of terrific help (from a pediatrician who really tries to UNDERSTAND a child, not just treat problems).

Four-Season Harvest: Organic Vegetables from Your Home Garden All Year Long, 2nd Edition

Review

Publishers Weekly-From first sentence to last, Coleman's ( The New Organic Gardener ) book is a delight--an earnest guide written with an impish sense of humor. It will refresh anyone who wants to get the most from a vegetable garden yet doesn't want to devote too much time and energy to the process. Apparently Coleman thoroughly enjoys every phase of gardening--from planting crops to weeding. Who else has ever suggested, only half in jest, dancing with a hoe? Or keeping a pair of ducks for pest patrol? This is that kind of book. It's also a book full of valuable information on how to harvest fresh vegetables and salad ingredients literally year-round--yet without an expensive greenhouse or indoor light garden set-up. Coleman combines succession planting (small sowings three or more times, rather than one big endeavor) with cold-frame growing in the winter months. He includes how-tos for building simple cold-frames. Given the fact that he lives in Maine, his advice seems all the more reliable. He believes in simplicity ("If what I am doing in the garden seems complicated, it is probably wrong"), seasonality (tomatoes in summer, broccoli in fall, mache in February) and diplomacy in the garden (which "has more to teach us than just how to grow food"). Here, his philosophy of organic growing is shared easily. The book concludes with an extensive chapter on the vegetables that comprise his "cast of characters." Illustrated. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title."Four-Season Harvest is a magnificent work. It's enticing, inspiring, sensible, and it opens a whole new world for the home grower."--Peter Fossel, Country Journal

I love this book! It has taught me many things I did not already know. I have a patio garden behind a condo on a 14X8 concrete slab. This book talks about working with greenhouses and planter boxes throughout the winter in the North where Eliot is from & having great success. I live in the South East where it is much warmer so I am looking forward to having many green veggies over the winter. This book has given me many ideas which I am adapting to my patio on a smaller scale.

Before I tell you how much I adore this book, let me tell you first what some may consider to be negatives.1. Eliot writes in a very conversational manner, and in so doing, he tells of some personal stories (particularly their visit to France). If you are a 'cold hard facts' kind of person and you're looking for a technical manual, you probably will not enjoy this book. It is not a very technical book, though it is filled with a lot of great information.2. If you do not have much of a winter to speak of (say, possibly Zone 9 and above), then this book may not prove to be too applicable to your situation. That's really the only negatives I can forecast for any of you readers out there! Now, on to my review. This book is a fun, easy-to-read manual on how to successfully grow crops year- round, and focuses on the crops that work best in the fall/winter months. You don't have to have a ton of money to do this. Eliot describes both the usage of cold frames and/or 'low tunnels' AKA 'chenilles' in the garden. These methods are described in enough detail that even a novice can successfully utilize them. The lovely thing about these methods is that you are using the warmth of the sun to keep your crops happy and healthy, and not using external heating devices. The list of acceptable crops is pretty expansive. I have read and re-read this book many a winter's evening sitting in front of our fireplace. It's very inspirational! While Eliot is in Maine (Zone 5, is it?) the book can be used for any US zone, with the exception of those lucky temperate zones which never experience a freeze. The tables can be converted to your own zone and your growing method (cold frame/low tunnels)and he explains how to do this. I am in Zone 8, which rarely freezes for more than a day or so, so instead of using cold frames I can instead use the low tunnels, which look like a miniature greenhouse. Mine are only about 2 feet tall in the center and were created with clear plastic sheeting (you can buy in a roll at most any home improvement store) and either PVC or steel rods which make up the 'hoops'. I have had GREAT success with my low tunnels. This is my second year to do this, and I'll never look back, thanks to Mr. Coleman.Last year, by the end of winter, I was treated to chard, broccoli, onions, cabbages, and cauliflower. This year, I have planted many lettuces, more chard, green onions and other crops which can be harvested throughout winter rather than at the very end of it.Some people have complained that they would need to drop a ton of cash and buy a greenhouse. I'm not sure where they would get that idea from this book, since it clearly tells you what to plant, when to plant it, and how to properly protect it...all without going into discussion about investing in a greenhouse. If you are in a cold zone (6 or less) and can't spend a lot on cold frames, I would imagine that you could use old single pane windows or even doors for the glass.

I book this book a few years ago as a present for my spouse, and should have written a review ages ago. But it may be just as well, since I can say that this book survives the test of time and seasons. This book inspired our first hoop house, and it was planted in our zone 6 location in January. We thought it would be impossible to get things going that late in the season, but I have pictures of us with a green bowl of salad with a March snow covering the outside of the hoop house, sort of like Mr. Coleman's photo on the cover. This method of gardening really does work. It truly does extend the harvest period to a four season harvest. His advice is sound as you will end up with healthy, viable seedlings and plants, and you truly will be able to fill your table without spending fossil fuels going to the grocery store for something that's been flown in from California or overseas. There is nothing like eating fresh rainbow chard, beets, and salad from your own garden in DECEMBER. And it is so much more fun to weed the garden when its not 90+ degrees outside:)Mr. Coleman gives charts and graphs, showing which vegetables can survive the colder temperatures, and he also provides suggestions on when to plant these items so that you have successive harvests. Some of the seeds may be harder to locate from mainstream seed houses, but I always find that Gourmetseed has them.In reading the book, his stories about tours in Europe and more, show that he has a tremendous sense of humor and a positive approach. I suspect he and his wife are the kind of people that it would be fun to sit and have a glass of wine with - good natured sorts. The world needs more of them:)I commend Mr Coleman heartily. This method puts food on the table, provides enjoyment for year around gardening, and is organic to boot. WOW.edit to add this thoughtful quote from Mr. Coleman's book:"We live in a world that has practiced violence for generations - violence to other creatures, violence to the planet, violence to ourselves. Yet in our garden, where we have nurtured a healthy soil-plant community, we see a model of a highly successful, non-violent system where we participate in gentle biological diplomacy rather than war. The garden has more to teach us than just how to grow food.

You don't have an "eating season", so why should your garden have a "growing season"?Train your garden to work year round, just like you have to do!I've read just about all the different kinds of books there are on the subject, yet this one still manage to surprise me with insights I've seen nowhere else. For instance, yes, in colder seasons the plants do not grow. But they don't all die, either! Many plants continue to produce fruit, they just don't produce foliage. So unless you take full control of seasonal conditions (a real option provided you have the heat and light energy), you still have to get your foliage growth during the growing season, but you can still get other produce, or at least store it better on the vine than in the cold cellar.Eliot Colman has been testing his methods in different parts of the real world, in many different zones, so you know there's something here for your situation. And for those of you who plant indoors, or want to, now you know you don't have to burn kilowatts all year long to do it, just for the few weeks required to build your plants up to the scale you need to do the job, and then coast for the rest of the year! This and many more insights need to be in your repertoire to realize the best results for your time and efforts, and this is where you'll get it.

Review

“Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo is the full name of the firstborn son in the Chinese family of this story. As the firstborn's, his name must be spoken completely and reverently. This old folktale of what happens when the boy falls into a well and his younger brother attempts to get help is nicely retold and should make excellent read-aloud material....Bright, active, and delightfully expressive.” ―School Library Journal“On spacious, uncluttered pages the artist has extended the story with wonderfully droll ink-and-wash drawings that combine imaginative beauty with a true Chinese spirit.” ―The Horn Book“Just right for storytelling and tongue-twisting repeating, and . . . for reading aloud.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Great book. This is fun to read and has a nice lesson. As a reading specialist and English teacher, I wish the critics and book banners would go away. So what if it is not completely authentic. It's a fiction book not a history or cultural lesson. It makes me wonder what these people read to children because if everything has to be totally accurate, animals don't talk, and then there is Santa, the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny...get it?

In a nutshell: Tikki Tikki Tembo as retold by Arlene Mosel is a fabled Chinese fable about two little brothers. The oldest one is purportedly given a long impressive name meaning “The Most Wonderful Thing in the Whole Wide World” as he is to inherit his parents’ beloved possessions. His younger brother is considered some sort of back-up and is given a short name (Chang) which means “Little or Nothing” or Clueless Playmate or something. Wiki-the-source-of-all-truth-pedia, states that the book is controversial because it may be a Japanese story told about China and does not portray Chinese culture accurately. I plan to seek guidance from my Chinese family members on where this story lands on the offensiveness scale. So,the boys are monkeying around and Clueless Playmate falls into the well. Golden Boy runs to his mother and they get a ladder-wielding-tree-napping-old-man to save him named “Old Man With The Ladder.” He pumps the boy’s leg like a water pump to revive him which must be some sort of olden time CPR.Of course the little boys are monkeying around in the bathtub AGAIN, I mean near the well, despite the close brush with death and this time Golden Boy falls into the well. His brother runs for help and after repeating John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt four or five times, almost passes out from exhaustion, leaving his evil mother childless. Fortunately, Old Man With The Ladder comes to his senses and rescues Golden Boy with the same water pump CPR procedure. And the story concludes that this is why Chinese families name their kids little, short names.Families can talk about: How would you feel if your name meant Little or Nothing? Do you know what your name means? Why is the mom so mean and dismissive of the younger brother? Why don’t the little boys mind their mother? Do you mind your mother? How confident are you about that answer? What is your game plan if you fall into a well or deep water? What should you do? And if you see your brother fall in? Why do you think swimming lessons are important? Which is more fun to say: Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo or John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt?

I remember this boom from childhood and loved it. The name of the little boy is oh so fun to say BUT as an adult the message of this book is horrifying. The mom is absent and neglectful of her younger son, the prized first son is left permenantly scared, and no one learns a lesson except to give the first favored son a short name...I’m sorry what?!? This book did not stand the test of time for me. But I would love to see it revised with a different ending. The illustrations are lovely and well tiki tiki tembo is super fun to say.

One of the most read books when I was a kid. Wanted to share it with my kids. This is a story about two brothers who care for each other. The youngest tries to get help for his big brother who has fallen in the well, but because of the older brother’s super long name he has difficulty expressing the emergency to adults to get help in time.

I read this as a child growing up, it was my favorite book. Of course like most people as you get older you throw away or get rid of things from your childhood and teenage days. When my niece started kindergarten I knew reading was going to be required and i wanted to share with her my favorite story from childhood, so i purchased this book to read to her and hope she will appreciate it as much as i did. Well needless to say she does share my appreciation or enjoyment of this book, but it matters not because i still enjoy this book as an adult.

When I was a child I loved this book so I knew I had to purchase it to read to my children. My daughter has memorized Tikki Tikki's full name and enjoys reciting it with me. This is a classic book! The moral of the story may be a little politically incorrect these days but I don't dwell on that part and if a parent wanted to, they can skip that last page. It's such a fun book to read.

My mom read this to me as a kid, and it was one of my favorites. As an adult I’m not sure how I feel about the cultural messages in the book, but it’s definitely fun to read out loud and the illustrations are pleasing to look at

I ordered this for my boss's granddaughter because it kept coming up in conversation and how I could still remember the kid's whole name (but not his brother's short, simple name, I kept thinking it was Chris, believe it's Chang). The artwork is fun and the book is so absurd, but nostalgia.
