As a person who tends to be a visual learner rather than an aural learner this course is a very good exercise for getting me to focus and train my ear and mind in new ways. These listening skills are not "automatic" for me so the fact that this book starts at ground level is fine even if I already understand it on paper (and by the lights on my eq- lol).As far as the Critical Listening cd goes I have had no trouble getting it to play, but...why is the first half the book the back half the cd and the second half of the book start at track 1?to confuse me more, when I get to the middle of the cd (where the lessons at the front of the book begin) it starts with lesson two??? Wondering where chapter one disappeared to I skipped through the tracks only to find it as the last track on the cd, track 18. Silly me I expected the cd to follow the book and for lesson one to correspond to track one. What the heck ever happened to quality control? C'mon guys! So minus one star for the quality issues, not content.The ideas are laid out logically and the course walks you along one little step at time. The latter could be a plus or a minus depending upon where you are coming from. For me this was better than if it had just rushed me along without being clear and concise, even if at the expense of being a bit tedious.Others like me might also appreciate the cd that comes with Ira White's "audio made easy" book. It touches on this topic in a practical way with examples involving actual instruments. White's book covers the basics (in breadth, not depth) and is a good resource for those just getting their feet wet in pro audio.

I picked up this book along with Master Handbook of Acoustics and found this book a good accompaniment. A lot of the topics discussed in the Master Handbook sort of coincided with this book in a similar order. I found the audio examples to be a fair reference point.. some of the demonstrations were pretty hokey but the point was totally there. The one thing I didn't like about the Master Handbook of Acoustics was the fact that it was a lot of theory without any sort of audio reference to tie the chapters together and this book worked as a good compliment and an overview of what you're listening for.It's true that if you have a copy of this book without a CD, it's useless since it does have audio identification exercises. If you receive this book without a CD or the CD is broken and you purchased from this site, Amazon does have a return policy so you'll want to replace it with a different copy right away. Also, if you've got a crazy audiophile setup but can't figure out a way to convert an .mp3 to a CD audio friendly format, try out Audacity for this purpose "[...]"I gave this book 4 stars since it has a dependency on the CD which, according to other reviews, does not work on all systems. This is more of a workbook of exercises than a full on how-to for critical listening.

I am currently a student in mediaproduction and not too apt in the field of audio. Often I would come across examples in my textbooks on problems concerning EQ, audio levels, sounds masking eachother comb filter effect etc. My biggest problem is that I do not know what I should listen for. I haven't finished this book yet, but I still feel confident enough about in order to praise it in a review. This book is very good. Nice examples on the CD and very helpful. I do not know how useful it is for audio professionals, but for a student I think it is awesome.In my first review I wrote that I thought the CD was sloppily made. In fact there was no trouble with the tracks, but since I did not realize that the CD contained mp3's rather than ordinary CD tracks my player read track 10 as track 2. Well, I dont know if I would trust mp3's as a listening reference (even if they have a very hight quality). I wish they could have used CD quality Wave files on a DVD instead. Still a helpful book, though.

Useful although a bit dated.

As a working musician I have branched into audio work, as well. In the first lesson out of the gate the system "tunes" you in to a new way of thinking. I have found this book to be a great jump start to more effectively running live sound.

This book contains some clear and self explanatory audio exercises. I hate to acknowledge that most of the exercises could have already been performed by using a 'free' (computer) tone generator to explore the different frequency ranges. Beware, it will require time to learn to listen properly. I was very wrong to believe that by listening to the contents once, I was set. I would suggest to make copies of use a separate sheet of paper to answers the exercises. This way you can repeat it, over and over. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in improving his/her audio listening skills.*PROS: -Good and helpful exercises -Nice correlation between the audio exercises and the freq. graphs on the book. -If you have no patience to play with a tone generator, this book is well suited for you.*CONS -The CD without the book or the book without the CD become useless. -You need to read the book while you listen to the CD. -The CD is in fact an MP3-CD, so you may not play it anywhere you want. -I have the impression that the book is kind of expensive. Many of the exercises can already be performed by anyone using a (free) tone generator. - The book is kind of bulky to take it anywhere.

I enjoyed reading it. However, there are some clear scientific errors in the figures and figure captions (e.g., location/name of some cities; offshore Vancouver is referred to as Northwestern Pacific, instead of northeastern; thickness of oceanic/continental crust).I have been using this book as a textbook for my class (introductory scientific English class) at a Japanese university over the past three years, but I had to clarify these errors to students every time we encounter such an error while reading together. Before clarification, I ask students if they have spot any mistakes in the figure, caption, paragraph, and so on. Toward the end of the semester, students are getting better at spotting these errors (they are earth-science major, so the content itself is easy for them but translating/understanding long English sentences correctly are the major problem for Japanese students). We do not discuss grammatical errors or get deep into the controversial topics, though, where it is difficult for undergraduate students to judge the statement is scientifically correct or factual enough.Among the scientific community, after the publication of this book, there have also been many changes regarding the scenario of how the eruption/explosion of Krakatoa and consequent pyroclastic flow/surge and tsunamis occurred in August 1883. It is even more dramatic than the book describes (even though the author appeared in BBC's (2006) documentary film `Krakatoa - the Last Days' with updated info, and some volcanologists believe that the tsunamis created by Krakatoa were so high that the seabed around Krakatoa was exposed to the atmosphere:[...]Others believe that the colorful sky in the painting "the Scream" by Edvard Munch (1893) reflects his observation of extraordinarily red and orange sky at sunset caused by the fine volcanic ash and aerosol brought to the air by the Krakatoa's 1883 eruption.I do hope Simon Winchester will write and publish an updated version of Krakatoa with these new discoveries as well as citations of similar volcanic disasters with vivid graphic descriptions which the author is exquisite at.

Came for the Krakatoa story, stayed for the brilliant history of Indonesia, the evolution of biology, and the progress of vulcanology, that were all served as the context leading up towards the day Krakatoa finally exploded in 1883.It reads like an intense novel, based on an imense library of factual findings and the scientific arguments behind them. It’s also a book that suddenly clicks all the interconnected web of events proceeding the explosion, as some kind of cause-and-effect, like how the explosion triggerred the eventual independence movement in Indonesia. Fascinating book.

There are some amazing passages to this book, and it highlights aspects of the eruption -- or history around the eruption -- that most readers never would have imagined. Unfortunately, the author wanted to share so much information that it distracts from the story. Footnotes provide interesting information that is at best tangential to the subject, so for a reader trying to learn about Krakatoa, it feels like one is constantly turning off the path, admiring something quite unrelated, and only with difficulty finding the path again.

The story of Krakatoa fascinates us over 130 after its eruption and does so for good reason. Volcanoes and earthquakes are potent reminders of how little influence we truly have in the face of the forces that govern our home planet. If a volcano decides to erupt, all any of us can do is to get the hell away as quickly as possible. Besides that, their effects are quite wide ranging. I was over 1,000 miles away from Mount St. Helens but it's ash pitted the finish of a new car I had bought scarcely two weeks before. Compared to Krakatoa, Mount St. Helens was a firecracker.Winchester's book covers the history of the region, especially as a Dutch colony and gives a good working description of plate tectonics and the history of that discovery. As a technophile I found that quite interesting. Overall, the book is good, but I won't say perfect. At times it seemed to be a bit slow paced and there were a few times I wondered why the author had chosen to spend so much effort on points that probably needed little coverage. Overall, nonetheless, it was an interesting read

Mr. Leonard Pickard has produced a wonderful book and I am happy to say that I enjoyed it very much. I was skeptical at first, having expected something 'too flowery' or 'too Victorian.' But it isn't. What it is is a book to be read slowly (as per the authors advice) and let it sort of wash over you and soak in. It is different. It seemed a bit inaccessible at first (it takes mental energy to read this book), but overall I found it to be a different, very rewarding experience.While the Rose of Paracelsus is a challenging book to read, I found that once I got into the groove I was able to follow along fairly well. I do recommend keeping a dictionary close at hand, and to refer to it often.To me it's a conglomeration of many different genres or styles, which I could see might put some people off. It's part prose, fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, allegory, poetry, novel, part autobiographical. It is not the tell-all autobiography that we all really want from Mr. Pickard. But I'll take it since he is still such an enigma; and to read anything from him 'in his own words' is pretty much gold if you have an interest in his story.And let's face it, the author is a fascinating person. If half of what they say about him is to be believed, then 'planetary scale batches' indeed!This book came along at a good time for me. Having just finished some books about LSD and the 60's (Acid Dreams and some others about the Brotherhood of Eternal Love), I inadvertently learned about William Leonard Pickard. It seems to me he might be a major missing link in the history of the 60's and psychedelics in America (and maybe the world). It will be interesting to see how this book fits into the psychedelic canon. In a future edition there is supposedly going to be an index and footnotes, etc. looking forward to that for some reason.I'm surprised more people aren't aware of him. Especially with all the renewed interest in LSD as a therapeutic compound, and the interesting brain scans and other studies. Maybe Obama could set him free before he leaves office on the condition that he write that tell-all and give some interviews. Has anyone seen any real life interviews with him, or even a recent picture? He's got his website and it has some good articles and documents linked to it. There is the Rolling Stone article floating around on the Internet, a book by someone in the case, another by someone related to the case, a few miscellaneous phone interviews, but nothing really substantial. So many mysteries.I can't finish this review without mentioning that 'The Rose of Paracelsus: On Secrets and Sacraments' was written by hand in a cell in a maximum security prison by a fellow human being who is paying the ultimate sacrifice for ... as far as I can tell ... just pissing off some folks in the 'old establishment'. I think he must have really pissed them off because they gave him not one but two life sentences. That's just crazy.

The only hope to save our race from its own annihilation still reaches out to us in compassion in the form of this book from behind the bars of his cell . What an amazing human being. The book is reminiscent of the great works of literature known for generations to come a true classic of our time, and if true then it belongs to a category of one of the great epics as well.Sam. Of the countless books I have read from Amazon, I have never been compelled to write a review until now. Reading The Rose of Paracelsus was a journey of written depths I have rarely, if ever, experienced. Pickard's prose is not for the faint of heart. The reader must prepare themselves to be immersed in the emotions of humanity at its worst, as well as the heart-warming sensation of an individual bearing their soul in a most intimate display of compassion. What makes The Rose all the more haunting is contemplating how much of the intense journey blurs the line between fiction and reality. This is a mental voyage in and of itself -- one that is well worth the introspection.I have never cried while reading a book, but I can recall several instances while reading The Rose in which my eyes could not help but weep. These were not always tears of sadness, but also the tears when one finds themself having to put the book down and pause to admire the beauty of what was read.This is a book that can be read frequently over a lifetime. The central themes of love, compassion, and the way they permeate the reader's soul are certainly useful in our world today. As one reviewer pointed out, keep in mind the context under which this book was written. Imagine sitting in a cage, day after day, year after year, formulating The Rose, and despite all the darkness around you, still managing to produce a masterpiece that shines the eternal light from the author unto the reader. For that Mr. Pickard, we are forever grateful.

Oh! 15' h x 9 ½" W x 1 ¾" thick ~15 lbs! This is NOT a one-handed reader! It is, however, totally awesome! Your coffee table may need to be reinforced to support this tome! ToF's men presented large enough to test the resolution of the scanner. I can see detail I never knew existed. I think Tom would have enjoyed perusing this oversized collection of some of his finest work.

Brilliant book, amazing format, art and photos; if you enjoy Tom of Finland this book will bring lasting enjoyment to your collection.

This book is a BIG and heavy. A great collection of his works from early years to the latter ones we are more familiar with. Great collection piece to my library.

A fantastic purchase, well worth it for such a collection if you happen to be a fan.The outside sleeve of the hardcover book was damaged and marked in multiple spots however. It looks like this book perhaps wasn't actually new, and was maybe carefully owned or even just sloppily handled when packaging. The inside seems to be in mostly almost great shape and is full of beautiful images. There are a few pages with questionable smears and some folded edges. A great addition to our library for it's original content, not the added extra possible DNA. I love this book, but the seller had to have known that this WAS NOT a new book...

It's all a heady subversion of gay sensibility, sadism, authoritarian culture against the homosexual; it's here, and if you are not submerged and gay or a bisexual male you'll miss the fun, the irony. Once Tom of Finland goes over the top he tries again and again to soar above it. His art even explains John Waters!

This book is worth every penny if you enjoy Tom's work! There are highly detailed and well shaded illustrations, posters that fold out of certain pages, a variety of erotic novelty, and information about the artist himself and some of the photographs he used for references!

Excellent TOF tome. If you’re a collector, this is for you, if you’re just looking for a comprehensive TOF this is it.

I just received the book, it's perfect! Only one thing I will say that was disappointing... my copy did not come with the cover case like displayed in the pictures. Wish it would have come with it!

Fondly recalled my learning computers on the "luggable" Osborne, teaching myself BASIC programming and learning to use the early word processors, graphics and spreadsheet programs then proceeding to the early Prodigy program and modems that let me choose between 300 bit transmission or step up to 1200 for a much higher price. I recalled the development of the world wide web, the explosion of AOL and other milestones.Loved the description of the creative process, especially comments like "testing that hazy borderline between persistence and cluelessness", "key to fielding a great team is pairing visionaries, who can generate ideas, with operating managers who can execute them. Visions without execution are hallucinations.""People who love the arts and sciences should endeavor to appreciate the beauties of math and physics, just as Ada [Lovelace] did. Otherwise, they will be left as bystanders at the intersection of arts and science, where most digital-age creativity will occur."Well written, well researched and a bit controversial at times as it tracks some of the "losers" who are part of the history of the digital revolution. Definitely a worthy read!

The good news: an epic sweep through computing history connecting the dots as Isaacson's sees them. Even if you're not a technical history fan than this book will serve as the definitive history of computing through the first decade of the 21st century.The bad news: this book will serve as the definitive history of computing through the first decade of the 21st century. It is at best technically wrong, misses some of the key threads in computing history and starts with a premise (that innovation comes from collaboration) and attempts to write history to fit.The difference between and a reporter and a historian is that one does a superficial run-through of a rolodex of contacts and the other tries to find the truth. Unfortunately Isaacson's background as reporter for Time and CNN makes this "history" feel like he was comfortable going through his Rolodex of "Silicon Valley" sources connecting interviews, and calling it history.I'm sure Isaacson would claim, "more details get in the way of a good story," however that is exactly the difference between a throwaway story on CNN and a well written history. The same epic sweep could have embraced and acknowledged the other threads that Isaacson discarded. The gold standard for a technical history is Richard Rhodes "The Making of the Atomic Bomb."(Other reviewers have pointed out pointed several critical missing parts of computing history. I'll add one more. While perpetuating the "Intel invented the microprocessor" story makes great business press copy it's simply wrong. Intel commercialized something they knew someone else had already done. Lee Boysel at Four Phase invented the first microprocessor. If Isaacson had done his homework he would have found out that Bob Noyce was on the Four Phase board, knew about the chip and encouraged Intel to commercialize the concept.)Finally, one of the "facts" in this book that differentiate reporting from history is the garbled bio of Donald Davies, one of the key inventors of Packet Switching. Davies is described as "during the war he worked at Birmingham University creating alloys for nuclear weapons tubes..." I started laughing when I read that sentence. It's clear Isaacson had no idea what Davies did in WWII. He obviously found a description of Davies' war work, didn't understand it and re-edited it into something accidently amusing - and revealing. What Davies had actually done during the war is worked on the British nuclear weapons program - codenamed "TubeAlloys".Understanding the distinction is the difference between a reporter and a historian.

As an introduction to the ethos and personalities who created the modern digital revolution era, The Innovators is a success. I would have preferred more technical descriptions of computer science but I work in data analytics so my opinion may not accord with the majority of readers.Somewhat simplistic, too universally positive but still an interesting survey of the major figures in computing. Not life changing but I can think of worse ways to spend nine hours than reading a work with as interesting a subject and as polished prose as this book.
