Every kayaker should have a library of reading and reference materials on their passion. This is one those books that should be in your library.The book opens with presenting many of the typical kayaking topics. A topic I liked and not typically covered was stretching.While well described, his advance paddling skills are difficult to visualize from the still photographs. The section on rescues offered several new (to me) techniques.Some were solo and some were team rescues.A concept that enlightened me was "Limit of adequate reserve". I had not thought of this fuel related concept applied to the human drivetrain. As the weather and seas get worse the human body only has so much energy available to reach safety. The author offers guidelines on these limits.You will find first aid tips, checklists, equipment recommendations, packing your kayak for a multiday trip. There's an introduction to reading the weather and the water.The rest of the book touches on coastal and open water topics. Some topics required seeking other more experienced inshore and open water paddlers to learn from. Yet other topics may involve some additional reading, or research, and then time on the water to hone your new knowledge.Something you don't often find in your typical kayaking book are some great color photographs of the points being made as well as some beautiful scenery shots.

Trying to read all I can on sea kayaking, I came upon this book. Simply excellent. Before this one, John Dowd's long-distance touring manual was my favorite. This book is more current, more concisely written and much better illustrated. I also felt that it has a bit broader coverage and more appropriately focused on paddlers who are already familiar with the basics and want to go beyond. A beginner with high aspirations will love this book. A beginner who has no intention to paddle off-shore or in rough waters will find this an overkill.

Clear, comprehensive, well written and presented.If you're going to buy one book on ocean kayaking, buy this one.If you're going to buy several, make sure this is one of them.

This is an awesome book and though I'm not even an intermediate sea kayaker yet, this book is immensely helpful. It is also a great companion to the 3 DVD set by Gordon Brown I have recently purchased.

This book is a most for any Kayaker who want to learn the best of Kayaking the safe way and right way .

Loaded with great technical info but not a dry read by any means. Although the book is aimed at intermediate and advanced paddlers, anyone who is comfortable edging their boat (light touring or sea kayak) will find a wealth of new tools within.

From the first day of class, my Engineering Economics professor proceeded to badmouth this text. He pointed out inaccuracies, inconsistencies, and points where the concepts were just presented poorly. In fact, he disliked it strongly enough that we only used it for homework problems (and even then, he often had to clarify points). I find it hard to justify purchasing or using a textbook that costs nearly $150 for just homework problems. The other material, quite frankly, is super-simple stuff such as compound interest, that could be learned from online resources or from a good lecture series.Long story short, if your professor states you need to purchase the book, go for it. If you're an instructor considering using the book to teach a class, however, please take the time to read through it beforehand to make sure it's worth the investment.

The best book ever. I rented on Goggle's books but I find it very difficult to find the topics I needed, so i rented on amazon and I will pay the differece and keep it.

I know this is a text book, but he does it methodically with great understanding. The book is well edited with no mistakes I can find. For an engineering type text book accuracy is essential. I keep this on my engineering reference bookshelf and refer to it often. I just can't seem to remember the fine details; I know very well, through hard experience, how a spreadsheet can get you in trouble without knowing the basic essentials.

Pretty good engineering economics book. Clear with the presentation of the topics, but some of the examples aren't as clear as they need to be. Overall very helpful.

The problems ARE NOT the same in the paperback internatinal version as the hardcover version.

Simply put, the book had the basics of Engineering Economy laid out quite well. I only found two problems. The book had a slightly hard time linking the words and principles it described with the mathematical calculations and analyses. Perhaps this was simply a lack of organization or fear of using up too much space. It seemed that the terms given and the processes talked about were often superfluous to the main material, which brings me to the second problem. The book was rather wordy in the introductions to the chapters and the conceptual explanations. Sometimes the introductions didn't apply to the material very much or were left unexplained. The book, however, did do its job, and the material was useful once it got to the point. It was excellent to use in a class, and the useful material was rather concise and easy to learn from.

Book was not in expected condition, pages were great, binding was falling out.

You get to feel like you are right there while all these amazing changes are happening in our country. While I know there are those who feel he wasn't perfect, but seriously who is? I am so proud of the way President Kennedy handled himself throughout his presidency. My parents were huge supporters of him. He makes me want to be more involved and engaged in what is going on in my country as well as the world. This book helped to understand just what type of man he was. I loved this book.

Superb account of the Kennedy years in the White House by a participant in many of the events. New material on several of the events, including the Russian missile crisis and the Bay of Pigs before that. His domestic program is newly reviewed and clearly Indicated the path to the Civil Rights bill. Some of the flaws of his Presidency are presented, although not all. Schlesinger clearly finds Kennedy a young, vigorous man whose death robbed us of a potentially great President.

This book is a very revealing and rewarding look at events of the Kenneddy presidency. Schlesinger had a front row seat to almost all important events from civil rights to prosecution of organized crime. It brings back a lot of memories of that time, both good and bad (assasination).The only drawback is the authors unbiased mancrush he had on JFK. Many times he carries his admiration beyond the bounds needed.

Earlier, in this space, I mistakenly posted a review of 'Kennedy'by Theodore Sorensen. In some way, Schlesinger's and Sorensen's book are twins. They were both written by men who shared a special relationship with JFK at a historical turning point. They are good to read together, for their complementary value. Schlesinger is better informed about outward-facing policy matters (especially foreign relations), while Sorensen gives a better sense of the inner workings of the White House and JFK's personality. This is history written on the wing. There will never be another time like this, when the young men of Kennedy's administration bestrode the world like giants--all of it cruelly ended by five seconds of rifle-fire in Dallas. But this book, with Sorensen's and also with Theodore White's The Making of the President 1960, brings it neatly back to us.

Purchased for my husband and he really enjoyed the read

I was reading the older publication, which was written chronologically. And I liked it a lot more than I liked this, cause that was raw and unedited. This one puts things a lot more in perspective as the author had time to review and think back to those days. Initially, we see things chronologically but eventually it goes into a topic-wise system like a textbook. This kind of bored me to death as I had to read through a ton of info piled up together. This might be good in one way, but when stuff in chapter 25 referred back to things in chapter 15, it kinda got really difficult to remember (its a 1000-pager btw). So all in all, it confused me a little. The original had a more humane touch to it too and really showed Kennedy the man, and not just Kennedy the President. We see less about how his family played a role in his life and more about his political life and the challenges he faced during those turbulent years. There is also a lower focus on his background and history than the original text, thus making it more difficult to understand his mindset and relate to who he is and why he did things the way he did them.

Many kids think it’s just a funny song. But it tells the story of a terrible tragedy—the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.   In 1871, Chicago was a rich and thriving city. Soon it might even pass New York as the most important city in the United States.   Chicago leaders knew that fire was one of the main risks to a large city. So they had planned ahead. They had a top firefighting force with modern equipment. No matter how big a fire was, they were sure they could stop it.   Sadly, they were wrong.   On a hot, windy October night, a fire broke out in the barn of a woman named Catherine O’Leary. The fire spread and spread for thirty hours. It jumped over two rivers. Nothing seemed to slow it down. By the time it was finally put out, most of the city was destroyed. Thousands of people, rich and poor, had lost everything.   One of the few houses that was left standing belonged to Catherine O’Leary. She and her family also survived the fire. But her cows did not. Did one of them really cause all this destruction?       Chapter 1: Buckets, Hoses, and Horses   Ever since people started living in houses, fire has been one of the greatest dangers they faced. For centuries most huts and cottages were made of wood or mud. Many of them had straw roofs. Inside, people used open fireplaces, candles, torches, and oil lamps for heat, light, and cooking. All this meant fires could break out at any time. And once they had started, it was easy for them to spread.   Firefighting was everyone’s business. If one house caught fire, all its neighbors were in danger. As soon as anyone saw a fire, they would sound the alarm. Then everyone in the village grabbed a bucket and rushed outside. They formed a double line from the fire to the nearest pond, river, or well. They filled buckets and passed them up the line to the fire. When the bucket was empty it was passed back down the line to get filled again. This was called a bucket brigade.   As cities rose up, buildings were packed close together. Fires could spread with even greater speed. Most cities had night watchmen. They kept guard against enemies. But they also watched out for fires. They could give the alarm right away by ringing a bell. The sooner a fire was reported, the more quickly it could be put out. The main way to fight a fire was still with buckets of water. Firefighters also chopped away wood that had not yet started burning. This took fuel away from the fire so it would die down.   Sometimes a fire was too hot to go near, or too high to reach. Then buckets and axes were not enough. In the sixteenth century, in Europe, people started to use pumps that could shoot water longer distances. The first pumps were like giant squirt guns. They were better than nothing, but they couldn’t spray very far. Then around 1672, a Dutch inventor created the first fire hose. It was hand-sewn out of leather. With a hose, firefighters could aim at a blaze many feet away, and then force water through the hose at it.   Machines for fighting fires began to appear about the same time. These each had a container full of water and a pump to force it through the hose to the fire. The first ones were called hand tubs, because they had to be filled by hand and then carried to the fire. After that the water was pumped through the hose by hand.   A big improvement came with the invention of a machine that pulled water directly from a well or pond or other source of water. Then, in 1829, a steam pump for fighting fire was invented. Now people didn’t have to pump the water by hand.   At first the heavy pumps had to be carried. Soon they were put on wheels and pulled to the fire by firefighters. It may seem odd that the men would bother dragging it themselves. Why not use a horse?   There were problems with making horses pull the engines. It took time to lead horses from their stable and harness them. And only a very special kind of horse could be used. It had to be strong and fast. Most important, it had to be brave enough to run toward a fire instead of away from it. And it had to stand still, right next to the fire while it was being put out. Most firemen didn’t trust horses to do this.   Engines grew bigger and heavier, however, in the nineteenth century. Finally there was no choice. Horses were necessary. In New York City, a horse was first used to pull fire engines in 1832. It took almost thirty more years for fire horses to become common. They were carefully chosen and trained. The city of Detroit actually established a “horse college” with report cards for each horse. The firemen worked closely with their horses, and they became very attached to each other.   Horses got so good at their job that it was sometimes hard for them to stop. After they were too old to pull fire engines, some were sold to pull wagons on city streets. At times when a fire alarm sounded, a former firehorse would try to go back to its old life. It would take off for the fire, dragging its driver along.

This book is wonderful. I was reading a bedtime story to my grandson and the book I was reading mentioned Mrs. O'Learys cow and I asked him if he knew about that. He is only 5 and naturally he didn't. I started explaining about the fire. He was so interested. He kept asking questions and didn't want to go to sleep. When he woke up the next morning, he kept asking his parents about it. So I found this book on Amazon and ordered it. It was perfect. It told the story in words he understood. I highly recommend this book.

THE INSIDERS' GUIDE TO ST. LOUIS is a great book for anyone interested in domestic travel. This book tells you where to find the most enjoyable attractions on both the Missouri and Illinois sides of the St. Louis metroplex, and also tells you where to get the best- and healthiest- food to eat. There is also a long discussion of different neighborhoods, as well as a section on both childhood and post-secondary education. The radio station list is also comprehensive. True, there is nothing about the area's shopping malls, but that's a minor quibble, as this is a great book that almost anyone can enjoy.

We used this book on a recent trip to St. Louis, and it was extremely helpful. I particularly liked how it devoted an entire chapter to traveling with children in St. Louis - so we were able to choose family friendly restaurants throughout our stay. I also noticed that some listings were repeated in different places throughout the book, so it was less likely that you would miss something if you looked in the "wrong" place. (eg. family friendly restaurants were also listed in the general restaurants chapter)I would recommend this guide to anyone planning a short or extended stay in the area.

I purchased this book for a religious studies class I was taking. It is interesting to ready. A little hard to follow especially with the language. I had to read some passages more than a few times to understand what was going on. But the content was incorporated very well with the other reading material that was assigned with this book. Very interesting.

This is a fine book, with definitions to less-familiar terms in footnotes. A bit of biography of the author is included (apparently quite the rake)! This is an enlightening part of my recent scholarship into Euro-Jewish history.

My first reading of Marlowe's work. Look forward to reading his other works.

ok but not as good as initially hoped it would be

Great story if you are up on you Shakespearean English. If not, it is very difficult to follow. If it came with a modern English translation it would be much better. Getting the Shakespearean "flavor" is one thing but it needs to be readable.

Subpar cover design. Looks thrown together.Materials are poor. What do doves and a tree have to do with the Jew of Malta?

I can't quite place this play of Marlowe's up there with "Dr. Faustus," "Edward II," "Dido Queen of Carthage," or "Massacre At Paris." But still, it is a good play.We meet Barabas. We see that his financial resources are more important to him than his spiritual values. But he does have a daughter named Abigail who he loves. (We can guess that Barabas is a widower since Abigail's mother never appears.) Well, the governor of Malta (Ferneze) seizes Baraba's wealth to pay tribute to Calymath and the Turks. (And on top of that Barabas's house is to be turned into a convent.) And at this point, we can feel sympathy for Barabas.But all is not lost. His daughter Abigail works her way into her father's house and is able to retrieve a nice amount of wealth for her father. Well, Ferneze learns that even paying tribute to the Turks may not be enough to keep Malta safe. Moving on, we might sympathize with Barabas when Lodowick (the son of Ferneze who seized Barabas's wealth) wants Abigail. And after some double talk, Barabas arranges for Lodowick to fight Matthias. This is where things start to shift. Abigail loves Mathias and is repulsed. (We also know that Mathias did nothing to Barabas.) Our sympathy for Barabas starts to diminish. The repulsed Abigail converts to Christianity and becomes a nun.Barabas furthers his descent into evil when (with the help of the vile Ithamore) he poisons not only his daughter Abigail, but the entire group of nuns. As horrible as this was, Marlowe adds an on stage event to emphasize how evil Barabas has grown. He murders a Friar and frames another. (And at this point, if we had any sympathy for Barabas, it's gone now.)Well, things start to turn. With some convincing, Ithamore decides he knows enough about Barabas to choke some money out of him. (Or he will tell.) Barabas is frightened, but should he be surprised? When you engage in foul games of this sort, how honorable can your accomplices be? Barabas manages to poison Ithamore and his 2 friends, but not before Ferneze learns of Barabas's crimes.But Barabas has another card to play. He betrays Malta and allows Calymath and his forces in. Ferneze is taken prisoner and Barabas is made governor of the town. But Barabas realizes that he will not last long if he is the governor of an area that hates him. It would seem he is out of cards to play. But his ambition can not cease. He makes a deal with Ferneze to kill Calymath, but Ferneze flips the tables, and Barabas is finally defeated.While better Marlowe certainly exists, this is still a good play. Barabas's technique of double talk was one that Shakespeare would eventually make use of. ("King Lear's" Edmund to name one) Also, like many other of Marlowe's protagonists, Barabas can not keep himself behind the line of 'this far, and no further.'
