I'm a huge fan of buying my books on Amazon. Especially all things mid-century modern architecture AND automobiles. This books description had both. When I read about the dusk/night photos of the homes in Palm Springs I just thought it would be the same great photos I've seen in countless other books I have....and enjoy frequently. However, these photos look more like they were shot using a filter to "simulate" the dusk/night view. Plus there were no comments below/adjacent to any of the photos....just a quick mention of what kind of car was sitting in the driveway, what year the home was built/designed, and the name of the original architect. No more, no less! I guess the book didn't really promise anything else its just that I'm so use to books on Palm Springs and the associated architecture & homes having a lot more dialogue and not just a "picture book" filled with photos that one could think were accidently shot with a heavy filter vs. any "starry nighttime" views. Don't get me wrong....if you look close you can see stars in the photos. Its a great "picture book" that doesn't require any concentration on descriptions or background information on architects or builders.

Just when we thought that the iconic homes of Palm Springs have been photographed in every conceivable way along comes Tom Blachford, following his Moon Seeker app through the night to capture each house at the right time. Tom's images show the otherworldly beauty of the desert at night as a backdrop to the designs of many celebrated architects who left the incredible, practical works of art that happen to be the houses we live in. A wonderful visual treat and an important book to have for anyone interested in midcentury modern architecture, Palm Springs and a photographer’s appreciation for his subjects.

Beautiful book of classic mid century houses and automobiles. What makes this volume so special is all photos were taken with moonlight as the only source of illumination.A serious collector of mid century subjects should have in their library....or coffee table for sure!

I thought that there would be more to this book... more images, more design ideas, but it was really a lot of the same type of pics... once you look at it once, no need to go back again... not a coffee table book afterall.

I first became aware of Tom's work several years ago after his first series. I was immediately drawn to the hypnotic images of the homes in my town. The stillness of the desert night, brightly lit by the full moon, is one of the things I love the most about Palm Springs. These homes are classics in their own right, and pairing them with the moonlight creates these striking photos. I was very lucky to spend time last February with Tom as he shot my home. It was an incredible experience, one I will always treasure. This collection is spectacular, and a must for anyone who appreciates mid-century modern architecture, Palm Springs, and architectural photography.

Tom Blachford has invented his own style and system to photograph architecture with only moonlight illuminating. The images are very "film noir" and have a mysterious vibe. Its a different way to see mid-century architecture presented, and it will appeal to both architecture and photography fans alike. And...really enjoyed the vintage cars as well. Totally unique and very cool!

I wish I could give this book 5 stars because the places that were written about were very interesting. So interesting, in fact, that I started making a list of which places we could visit during our upcoming October vacation. I could only give a 1 start rating because, as I started researching the places on my list, I encounter several restaurants and bed and breakfasts that are no longer in business. I can't imagine what a disappointment this would have been had we planned our trip around these places only to arrive and find them shuttered. I would highly recommend these books be taken off the website until an updated version can be offered - or at least give a disclaimer that there is a possibility that some places may no longer be in business and the reader should do their research before attempting to visit.

I should have looked closer. I'm sure some visitors will get something out of this, but basically, this a billboard of business in Arkansas. I have no need for it. Maybe will leave at the cabin I've rented along the Buffalo River for somebody looking for a restaurant in the area. For me, I got nothing out of my purchase.

Traditionally, people communicate the way they want to be communicated with. Juliet acknowledges this, and gives you other options to use when communicating to different styles of people. These are great lessons to learn in your life and in your work.Pick this book up! It's a quick and interesting read for both business and personal use.

A friend recommended this book to me, and I've since given to others who've loved it. It's fresh, with practical approaches that I've been applying in many communication situations. THEY'VE WORKED! Some books make 'persuasion' feel more like 'manipulation'. This author shows how persuading someone can be the end result of a relationship built on trust and an authentic awareness and interest in the other person. Most importantly, there are lots of clear tools to help practice what she suggests.For example, I am more aware of my attention and have gotten much better at paying attention by applying her advice. Again, it's not about manipulating, but about really listening. Erickson writes "Giving someone else your attention is a way of treating them, and yourself, with real respect. It can't be faked." And she tells you HOW to do this better.Also, there's a great list of questions to help prepare for an important meeting or phone call. My book naturally falls open to pages 96 and 97 because I refer to them so often. They help me get the focus off of myself and onto what's important to the other person/people. I feel so much more prepared and confident when I use these questions to guide my planning.I could go on and on, but one other way Erickson's book has had an impact on my communication is the "levels of engagement" she describes when having a chance encounter. She asks: Are you engaging to be polite (hearing but not listening) - Level 1. Or, engaging to be right (I know what you're going to say, I might even finish your sentences) - Level 2. Level 3: engaging selectively (I have a pretty good idea about how I want this chance meeting to turn out because I know what you do for a living and it relates to what I do -- there could be a good opportunity here). Or, Level 4: engaging to learn. (I want to understand as much as possible about you in the time available and under the circumstances. Let's enjoy this chance meeting.) She writes more about each level but they really helped me realize how I was treating these situations - at conferences, cocktail parties, airplane rides. Engaging to learn has had a tremendous impact on relationships I've developed (and business opportunities that have resulted much more naturally, genuinely, and enjoyably).It's an easy to read guide that will encourage you to connect in a more meaningful way with others and will give you practical ways to make your communication more effective.

I bought this book at an airport and its easy-to-read style and structure meant that I was soon able to apply the ideas that I had picked up from the quick read on the flight. The book was also worth the more detailed read that I gave it a couple of weeks later. As someone involved in a very analytical field I appreciated the author's ideas on how to make my messages more accessible to a broader audience.The chapters are set out in a way that means that you can readily find what is relevant to a particular situation or circumstance. The book does not appear to be aimed at a business audience, and its style would make it a worthwhile book for anyone who wants to have a persuasive message.My only quibble would be that there is a section on cold-calling - as anyone who has received cold-calls would agree these should be banned!

My grandchildren ages 10,8,6,5 all love the 3 movies several times; the 2 oldest love the first 3 books; but it is my oldest who treasures the whole series. This book she immediately in mid-package unwrapping and began to read the beginning with The Wardrobe and pen in place. She has as of 1/4/14 read it all and markings all over; now she is reading again for "something I might have missed besides it is fun". I have been blessed to have such kids with whom I have opened their imaginations and dreams; and since they live but 7 miles away and are with us weekends, the old stories come back more alive than ever. As to CS Lewis? Well she now wants his letters to children and Screwtape. No doubt next year Mere Christianity. The book is just great! Caused me to purchase others: Family time with Narnia, called ROAR and another to help children understand each character. Lost its name right now; but all are just perfect.

Used this as a companion to the book. Very good information and guides.

I am really very glad I bought this book. My 10 year old daughter and I have enjoyed reading it together.

I did not read this book, but did browse through it. I purchased it for my ten year old grandson who loved the Narnia story--however, I feel this is written for an older child, or an adult, that is why I did not give it 5 stars.

My 9 year old grand daughter was thrilled to receive this as a Christmas gift. Narnia lover that she is!!
