Colin Renfrew is Disney Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and former Director of the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research at the University of Cambridge. He is the author and editor of many books, including Before Civilization, Archaeology and Language, and Prehistory and coeditor (with Paul Bahn) of The Cambridge World Prehistory. I may be a bit biased as an anthropology minor when I say this book is beautifully written. I am amazed at how the author managed to convey such a large volume of information in an articulate and attention sustaining manner. Here are a couple takes thereof:1. There is a LOT of information in this text.2. The language is not esoteric, and concepts are very detailed and drawn from numerous examples (in other words: a great introductory text, but get the highlighter ready!).3. Chapters are very well organized. Most chapters have five or more "box features" that apply recently learned knowledge to actual archaeological sites and endeavors.4. This text manages to integrate archaeology very well into its sister anthropology disciplines all the while never losing its titular focus. The student will develop admiration for anthropology as a whole and the entirety of the human condition.5. This text can possibly be read in any order. The text references itself quite often, possibly reflecting the integral nature of the discipline.All the above being said, I unfortunately must NOT recommend the .azw format (modern Amazon Kindle format). As seen in the attached screenshots, many of the images are indecipherable across all Kindle platforms (PC, Android, and iOS). And I am not lightly using the word "many" either. In a text where many concepts require accompanied images to assist the student, this alone definitely justifies my rating. The visual aides play a vital role in this text, and the lack thereof negatively impacted my educational experience. Compounding the dilemma is the inflated textbook price, where one would expect such flaws to be remedied in the editorial stage of publishing.TL;DR? Great intro to archaeology, but AVOID THE KINDLE VERSION AT ALL COSTS!
Solid content, but, wow, there's a lot of it. Don't be fooled either: as long as it looks, it's even longer. They use a pretty tiny font to cram in more words per page than is reasonable. I used this with a student in an independent study and she liked the book, learned from, but found it occasionally exhausting to push through the volume of information. There's nothing wrong with the writing, but it might have been paced differently. Great textbook in terms of it's instructional value, however.
This text was required for an upper division college course in Methods and Theory of Archaeology. This text provides a great deal of information. It is not simply an overview of theories, methods, and practice; it is very detailed. There are a great number of photographs, side-bars with additional information, charts, and the like. It is certainly not a quick read, but if you're willing to devote the time to it, it is well worth it. It covers not only the history of the field of archaeology (key players, developments, changes in theory, etc.), but methodology used in the field and examples of those methods in practice.The only downside, in my opinion, is the writing style: Renfrew is not known for writing concisely. For upper-division undergrad courses or graduate courses, it is a great choice. It is probably not appropriate for lower-division undergrad courses, due to the amount of information covered.Overall, great book for learning about the field!
I have purchased this edition and several proceeding it, and have found each to be a model of clarity, breadth, depth, and presentation, and each new edition improves substantively on its predecessor. The end-of-chapter bibliographies, as well as detailed notes and bibliography at the end of the book are invaluable guides to additional relevant sources of information. I am not an archaeologist, nor student, but rather a lay reader fascinated with all aspects of archaeology. You cannot go buying and reading this book.
This is the best introductory textbook for Archaeology, and I think there is a general consensus to this. The text is thorough and covers not only the basics such as "what is archaeology" and "what methods do we use as archaeologists" but includes topics on the history of archaeology as well as ethical considerations as to whom archaeological artifacts belong. Most importantly, Bahn is a very good writer that engages the student/reader. So many other texts are dry and do not do justice to a fascinating topic. I would recommend this book as a course textbook, or for anyone wanting a thorough introduction to the science and art of archaeology.
I had bought this book for an introductory Archaeology class. To my surprise, this was an excellent book, having been written with such care and attention to detail to keep any reader captivated and eager to learn more. The illustrations are top notch and help to flesh out the information presented. This literature is sure to help anyone wanting to learn more about archaeology, or anyone who wants to understand how we uncover the past.
When my husband and I were given the opportunity to travel to Greece in 2004, I realized how much I had studied archaeology when I was younger, but instead I am now reading about it and other books which I have picked up along the way. I really like the book, its just not a book to look at, but to learn from. Thank you.
