A great cookbook from London with gorgeous photos. Recipe measurements are in metric, so for us U.S. citizens it makes for a test in conversions.

Nice quality, good size. Wish the handle was longer.

I read about this book in one of my magazines & bought three. Two for family & one for myself. Looking forward to using it. Recipe photos are bright & colorful.

Overall this is a very attractive book however there were two basic problems with making their pizza recipe at home. First is on page 14 where the Yeast Version of the pizza dough is outlined. To make 640g dough it says to use 250ml lukewarm water, 0.2g dry yeast, 1 desertspoon olive oil, 380g flour, 10g salt. That seems like a lot of salt (10g) and a tiny amount of dry yeast (0.2g). The amount of yeast is so small that it can't possibly be right, can it? I'm happy to stand corrected if 0.2g is correct but then I'd like to know how you can measure 0.2g of dry yeast easily in the home kitchen. As a result, I ditched the book and went back to using my old pizza dough recipe. The other thing is that the authors suggest leaving the dough in an ambient temperature of 20-25 (degrees)C for 16-18 hours. This would be ok to do in a pizza restaurant but in the home situation in a cooler climate, how could this be achieved without heating the house to the required temperature for that period of time? In short, those two problems with the basic pizza dough recipe really detracted from what is a wonderfully produced book.

This book is seemingly a compilation of dive locations frequented by dive resorts, with little independent research or reviews of specific dive outfitters. The book lacks basic information on water temperatures, currents, winds and seasonal influences. The independent traveller primarily interested in snorkeling will also be disappointed in the lack of practical information on the best sections of the main islands for shoreline snorkeling.

This is a great reference book to take with you to Fiji. It is very informative and up to date.

Simple no-nonsense guide to diving in Fiji

This is an attractive book which the scuba diver will want to order. It maps and describes 74 of Fiji's top dive sites and the color photography is excellent. Despite the title, however, those interested in beach-based snorkeling will find little of use here as almost all of the sites included are accessible by boat only. Even the new Waitabu Marine Park off Taveuni is mentioned only in passing. There's virtually no practical resort or restaurant information, and the first quarter of the book is devoted to brochure-style hype you can read on almost any Fiji website. Critical reviews of dive facilities are strikingly absent, so this book is of no help in selecting a specific scuba operator. Five pages of listings in the back of the book provide basic contact information, but even this is out of date as all Fiji telephone numbers have increased from six to seven digits since the book was published. Most of the email addresses are also wrong, so substitute @connect.com.fj whenever you see @is.com.fj. Nevertheless, when one considers the cost of a scuba tour to the South Pacific and the lack of any alternative Fiji dive guide, all of the above criticisms are mute and serious divers will click this title straight into their shopping carts.

"Ni sa bula vinaka", as it is said in Fiji. As a master diver who has dived since 1956, and has visited many of Fiji's dive sites, I can heartily recommend this book to anyone contemplating diving Fiji. The Mahaney - Witte team- authors, photographers and dive tour guides well-known and respected in the diving community- are knowledgeable and credible. Mind you, NO book can ever catalogue ALL of Fiji's diverse and innumerable dive sites... but this book is well planned, has a very good selection of sites- rated for conditions and experience levels- and information for the would-be Fiji diver. The book has some maps, and a visual feast of photos. In summary- going to Fiji to dive? Be prepared for stiff currents, and a kaleidoscope of colorful fishes and soft corals... and BUY THIS BOOK! Dive well and safely.

I bought this book primarily because I am going to Fiji in two months and wanted info on snorkeling. Boy was I surprised to find only half a page devoted to snorkeling. The rest of the book is a brief description of various dive sites.The book does have nice pictures and basic information regarding the more popular dive sites in Fiji. But as a snorkeling reference, it is worthless.

I am afraid I was sorely dissapointed by this book. I brought the book hoping for not only a list of dive sites but also the exact latitudes and longitudes of the dive sites. The book only had very vague maps that were lucky to get you within 2 miles of the dive site.Whats the point of giving you all that information on a dive site except how to get there!!! All the information in the book (except the coordinates of the dive sites) is just as easily obtained from the local dive companies, so I simply dont see the point in purchasing the book.About the only good thing was it allows you to plan dives before you even get to Fiji. The book only had 3 dive sites listed for the Yasawa Islands - which have lots of good dive sites.Given the book was published in 2000 and I was in Fiji in 2009 I guess the book is basically getting quite dated now.Dive sites like Gotham City, which got its name after the Bat fish that live there, no longer seem to have any Bat fish. Sad but possibly a factor of the age of the book and locals who have been eating the bat fish?

I am a private math tutor and author of A Guide to the Math SAT. I use this book with my students because the College Board only publishes four practice test in their book The Official SAT Subject Test in Mathematics Level 2 Study Guide and four practice tests just are not enough.The first test in this book is mostly new, with some problems borrowed from earlier editions, and the second test in the book is unchanged from earlier editions. I appreciate PR updating their books, but not when changes introduce errors. This is what I found so far:Problem 10: The solution in the book uses substitution to solve this whereas I attempted to solve it using algebra. I think PR got lucky here with their substitution value because their answer choice is not correct in general.Problem 15: There is a typo in the answer key. The correct answer is (D).Problem 20: There is a mistake in the question. If the question reads "which of the following must be false" then the answer choice is (E). Unfortunately the question reads "which of the following must be true."Problem 32: There is a typo in answer choice (A). It should be f(-1) not f(1). The typo results in two correct answer choices.

I have already stumbled 3 errors in the first 15 questions of the first practice test (e.g. Math is done wrong, no correct answers choices are given or similar).

Wrong answer key, formulas, theorems can easily throw you off. I hope they fix their mistakes.

There are many faults within the book’s practice test’s questions and their answer explanations. This can lead to frustrated math problem solving as you are unable to find answer choices that actually work. I would suggest Barron’s Math Level 2.

I am a student who very often has to study for standardized test -- and often I have made the mistake of purchasing princeton review books. These books, while they are informative and mostly accurate, include a ton of mistakes in the questions or their practice tests. For example, if you look at page 25 on this very book, in question 4 you would see two of the same answer choices. And this isn't limited to these books, they also range throughout thier selection such as thier Ap biology and their Biology SAT books.

I was predisposed to love The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 1, as alternate history is a favorite genre, and famous character mash-ups a particular favorite as well. Volume One introduces a "menagerie" (as they are often referred to) of otherwise famous literary characters brought together to help Queen and Country with dangerous tasks in a somewhat steampunky Britain of an alternative history. Two characters, Mina Murray and Allan Quatermain, are favorites of mine from their original novels and I loved the idea of them having more adventures.This graphic novel has many literary references, both in the text and illustrations, which is a delight for a book nerd. The pseudo-Victorian style and parody of Victorian serials used throughout the novel was highly amusing for a fan of that era and added an extra level of enjoyment.Character development and setting introduction took the first few chapters ("issues") and was pretty well done. The personalities of the five members of the League were nicely established and tantalizing hints given about the world from both the illustrations and the text. I became quite fond of the characters, even the amoral Griffin, and was eagerly awaiting plot development.When the plot did develop, however, it was unsatisfying. Perhaps because so much time had been spent developing characters and world, very little time was able to be given to generate a decent plot. It was a messy, mishmash of explosions and overaction (not to mention overacting) and made very little sense. If it was meant to be a parody of Victorian fiction, it didn't read like any of the multitude of Victorian novels I have read.The art was nothing spectacular. While there were some scenes drawn with "hidden" references, these occasional treats did nothing to add to the story. The illustration of the panels is a very straightforward, comic book style, with no artistic angles or composition. The lines are harsh, the backgrounds busy, the colors generally unappealing. There were even times when panels were so busy with so many irrelevant details, that it was hard to find the action. I certainly did not feel that I was reading a graphic novel where the art is vital to the storyline; I felt as though I were reading a comic book.Despite my interest in the characters, the lack of a real plot line and the average art made this very promising premise a mediocre read. I truly am interested in the characters, though, and may still give the second volume a try to see if Moore and O'Neill were simply getting established with this volume.

Most of Alan Moore's most famous works are a critique of the superhero genre: "V for Vendetta" critiques the British system and an anarchistic response to it, "The Watchmen" critique the American culture of superheroes as liberal visionaries or right-wing vigilantes in the context of the cold war. This continues this critique but by referencing the 19th century literature, both classic and pulp. Indeed, Moore seems to be pointing out that the line there was always thin. In the context of the British Empire, Moore shows that heroes are basically imperialists. Furthermore, in a similar vein to "the Watchmen," most of the characters are much more morally problematic than their literary counterparts. Having a background in 19th century British literature helps: Bram Stoker's "Dracula," Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea," H. Rider Haggard's "King Solomon's Mines," Robert Louis Stevenson's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and H. G. Wells' "The Invisible Man" build the context of the main characters, and the personalities do seem rooted in the books. Knowing Ian Flemming's James Bond and Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes' characters help as well. The art is very driven by pulp art as well as Victoriana in general. That said, the empire may not be all it seems and so too the problems of the precursors to comic books. This volume is a fairly straight ahead story as far as Moore is concerned, although the literary references build very quickly. At a surface level, this is not a subtle comic, but it works much more deeply in dialogue with its source material and with culture of superheroes: a genre that Moore seems to work in only to undermine.

Alan Moore finishes the LOEG for now. They find the bad guy, but rather than win, a more powerful character comes along. As you read, it's evident that Moore didn't like Harry Potter.The first volume in this series was good. It sets up the story, leaving room for sequels in the hunt for Haddo, the Anti Christ. 1969, rather than being much of a sequel was more of a parody of 1960s sexual revolution. 2009 picks the story up again, we get a story largely settled on Orlando, and a conclusion that doesn't make much sense.Don't get me wrong, this is much better than 1969 in the trilogy of this story. But it still is missing whatever that intangible is that made the first two LOEG story lines so good. For me, I think Allan Moores heroes are just best in the 1900s. But it's Moore so if he releases further stories, I know I'll buy it

It is inscribed on her heart, too, and that of Abraham Lincoln.

A fascinating study that almost makes you feel guilty as if you are window peeking into their very private moments. So enjoyable and hard to resist. You want to both cheer for Mary and/or then to chastise her gently as her life unfolds in this extraordinary defense of a remarkable woman and her family as she endured character assassination and misunderstandings. I highly recommend this book that is both well researched and explanatory and reads like a novel. Easy to enjoy for history buffs and for those who like a good gossipy look into the lives of others.

This author is the wife of a biographer of Mr. Lincoln who helped her husband with his work. This biography seems to me admirable in terms of accuracy and scope, but I did find it a little depressing that the man wrote about the man and the woman took the less important figure, a woman. There are many interesting facts and details about both Lincolns. And the sketching of the societies, geographical and economic, in which Abraham and Mary grew up is the most engaging part of the story. The writer is an articulate and deft storyteller; however, much of her energy is devoted to "correcting" ideas about Mary Lincoln that were promulgated by a person who knew her and did not like her. It is important to dispute popular ideas about Mary: that she was crazy, a shrew, a racist supporting the Confederate cause, and that the marriage was not a happy one. The truth is, as the author demonstrates, different.The single most memorable item in the book to me was that as a child Mary and her sister were told by a woman slave in their household that she had put markings on the fence around their property signaling to runaway slaves that they could get food there. The girls did not betray her trust. This graphically shows how clearly many whites who grew up with slavery understood it was wrong.However, in her efforts to defend Mary, the author, while describing some of her bizarre behavior (as she is obligated to do), over-excuses it to my mind -- though to be fair, Mary had experiences that might unhinge anyone. Possibly a more recent writer would have investigated if some of Mary's oddities might have been caused by, say, bi-polar disorder.Still, if you are keen about Lincoln, there is lots of worthwhile information in this book.

I very seldom leave reviews but I feel compelled to speak up for this work. The first few chapters were a bit dry and redundant, and barely held my interest, but I muddled through, and I am so glad I did! If you are a history buff you will thoroughly lose your self in this biography. Mary Lincoln is the topic, but so many people who played a historic role in America's Civil War times are represented on an intimate and personal level. The writer goes to great lengths by putting together correspondence of the time, a sweet tragic story of the Lincoln family. So sad and informative, I couldn't put it down.

I found this book very insightful. Even though published a while ago, it appears well researched. What impresses me the most, I think, is I've not read a book on Mary Lincoln that has this much information about her. I find it awful that many rumors about Mrs. Lincoln, stemming from her husband's former law clerk, are still circulated today!The authors writing style and language reflect the time it was written and are a bit different from today's styles, however, anyone who has a sense of history can cope. A very, very, good read.

This is an interesting, well researched work. While the author foes a good job of rehabilitating her, I think it would make more sense for a historian to present her with bipolar disorder. This makes perfect sense and it's characterizations match her symptoms

I really enjoyed this book. It is well written, and I learned SO much I did not know. I can't imagine living through all the hateful things said about her. Oh my, it was awful. Poor woman. Everyone should read this book. My son-in-law has a Masters in History, and he thought all the old gossip about her was true. Great read.

I consider myself an history buff, but there was so much I did not know about Mary Lincoln. This book was very well written. I did not want to put it down.

I bought this for my son who is almost 11. He's had a history of getting bullied at school quite a bit and has put up a hard shell exterior to 'protect' himself. I was hoping this book would have some stories in it to help him deal with this. I didn't know if he'd read it so I told him we could read it together, one or two stories at a time at night. We did that for a few days. One day he told me he'd finished the book. He just kept reading it. He does love to read. He said it made him feel good that he wasn't the only kid to be going through this stuff. He seemed lighter afterward. Now he wants to read the teen book I got for his older brother. I think this book made tween life just a little more bearable for my son. That is so worth it. And, he can read it over and over again as he feels he needs it.

Thank you "Chicken Soup for the Soul".......If I have said it once I will say it again; "Chicken Soup for the Soul" are classic reading books about real peoples life events and "Christian Soul" is one of those that continue you to give you hope and to let you know that you are not alone in this life's journey. These are the kind of books, or for me on my "Kindle Fire", that you sit by a warm fire with some milk and cookie's or a hot cup of cocoa and submerge yourself into someone's life for just that brief moment; you always hate to see the story end but know there is a whole book waiting for you to read. Ok, I know CSFTS books are famous for uplifting and helping through, but i have to honestly say..... IT DID NOT do the same for me. I highly admire what these peope have overcome but it was honestly more than I could handle. I cried through most of these stories and by the end of the book I was more depressed than uplifted. Of course this is just my personal experience with the book but I can say that it helps to remind you that you are not alone and even helps you count your blessings when you think you got it bad. I do recommed this book but I suggest you proceed with caution if you are easily affected by other peoples pain.

Nor can one pick out a favorite New Mom story from the 101 inspirational Chicken Soup real, true anecdotes from the collection put together by this favorite anthology publication. And who will not find delight in reading about new life, mostly from the new mother's point of view? You will find emotional tugs in the pages of this one. Chicken Soup for the Soul is the perfect gift for the expectant mother, or the mom just after the new arrival. Perhaps she'll find a moment when her child is resting, and she can slip in one or two stories quick. Better yet, the new DAD can read her a story while she nurses the new little one.I must admit to a favorite due to personally knowing Nikki Studebaker Barcus, the author/mother who attends church where my wife and I do. We're also good friends with her parents. She's a good writer, and this story is about her first-born. "Noah to the Rescue" is a short story that gets top billing in our house, but honestly, many other stories are equal in value and fun reading entertainment. Tissues may be needed for some heart-warmed tears or laugh tears. Better yet, use a cloth diaper; they're coming back into use.OK, true, this Chicken Soup-New Moms collection is well beyond Nikki's true story. All stories are true, making them even more fun. I'm waiting for my 10th grandchild to be born, a he, and it's mom and dad's first-born; so perhaps this is a perfect baby shower gift for them. A perfect doctor's office waiting room book. A gift for almost any woman, even though it could be considered family-friendly.I've read many Chicken Soup for the Soul collections. This is my first written for New Moms. But now I've learned, it not just for new moms, its by some new moms, related to new moms, honoring new moms, but actually enjoyable reading for everyone, even retired old grandfathers.
