This is a gimmick book--but a pleasant one at that. The front jacket matter includes the following comment that lays out the essence of this work: "Misconceptions, misunderstandings, and flawed facts finally get the heave-ho in this humorous, downright humiliating book of reeducation based on the phenomenal British best-seller." Or, as the author puts it (page xix): "This book is for the people who know they don't know very much. It contains hundreds of things that the average person doesn't know."Let's get to the book, then. One nice way of giving the reader a sense of what's involved is simply to note some of the questions and answers. Enough to give a taste, not enough to spoil reading the book."What speed does light travel at?" (Pages 56-57) It depends. In a vaccum, 186,282 miles per second. In 2000, a team at Harvard University managed to stop light, shining it into a bec (not clear what that is!) of the element rubidium. "Where do most tigers live?" (Pages 66-67) In the United States! These are captive animals. In the wild, numbers are dropping dramatically. "Where do camels come from?" (Pages 93-94) North America. Here's a new one for me (among others): "What Edison invention do English speakers use every day?" (Page 131-132) According to the book (and this is one on me), the word "Hello" was an Edisonian invention."What rhymes with orange?" (Pages 208-209) Orange is a dread word for poets. According to this volume, there are two words--Blorenge and Gorringe, both of which are proper nouns.So, there you are. A lot of fun. I don't pretend to know if all the answers to the questions posed are correct, but it's quite enjoyable to run through the questions and test your knowledge against the answers provided in the book.

Great read. This book is filled to the brim with interesting facts, each of which are self-contained and covered in 1-2 pages, which is the perfect length. It's quick enough to pick up and read for a few minutes at a time, but also long enough to give a fairly good explanation of the facts it's laying out.A lot of the book is spent challenging things most people accept as fact (do goldfish really have a 3 second memory? did Marie Antoinette really say "let them eat cake?" are you sure the Earth only has one moon?), or asking interesting questions with surprising answers (what color is water? what does the moon smell like?). If any of those examples I just listed interested you, then by all means give this book a whirl.

This is one amazing book. You don't want to put it down. As you read it, you wish there was someone standing nearby so you could share what you just read. I even had to pick up the phone and call my son to relate a section of the book right after reading. Forget what you know or think you know and open your eyes - you will start to question everything you think you know. You think you are well educated until this book throws into question what you know and goes about showing you why you are wrong. Myth buster. Buy it for yourself, buy it for friends, give it as a gift, or share your copy. Worth twice what it costs.

Given as a gift to an avid reader, keeper of facts big or small, obscure or broadly known, and self proclaimed junkie for "nickel knowledge" -the kind of stuff good for dinner parties and wowing grandchildren - who says this book as a gift was great fun and a perfect pick. (Whew!)

Bought for my 15 year old avid reader daughter. This was an Amazon suggestion after I bought my daughter the book “What If...” She loves it and has been reading excerpts from it since she unwrapped it.

Seemed to be a very interesting book. Filled with seldom know facts. Then the authors infuse their Catholic beliefs about Mary being a goddess and hokey myths trying to say the Bible is inaccurate. Throws a shadow of doubt as to the facts of all other chapters.

Fun read with some surprising revelations! What is nice...is this isn't the type of book you have to sit and read from front to back. I just sit for a few minutes...peruse a few pages, then I can pick it up at another time and restart anyplace in the book.

I learned a lot of interesting facts about things that I thought I already knew. This book also destroyed many beliefs held since childhood. Who knew that Rudolf the Red Nosed Deindeer was really a female? Many more myths like that are investigated and explained in this fascinating book.

Very well-documented and factual. Interest level is very consistent throughout, and for such diverse topic material, that is a big accomplishment. It it only had an index, this book could become a very useful and entertaining reference work as well.

On two different grids, each was missing one of the words/phrases. After spending too much time searching for them I gave up and looked for the answer in the back. To no surprise, the words/phrases I could not find were not in the answer grid either! That was frustrating but not as frustrating as the words/phrases and grid near the end of the book. Not one of them could be found in the grid. The answer grid did not match at all. Whoever proofed this book did a very poor job. I would like to recommend the book but can’t.

Misspellings in some of the words we are meant to find. Some of the grids are using a small font that is tedious and not fun to do. Also, I looked for the word Mississippi in one of the grids for about 20 minutes thinking okay, what am I missing? I couldn't find it and it wasn't in the answer page either! Several other grids had mistakes in them in that the words weren't always in the same puzzle. Then towards the back of the book NONE of the words could be found. It's like nobody proofread this and they put the wrong word list with a totally different puzzle grid. Wouldn't buy from this publisher again. Oh, well.

I love these type of books. They keep your mind working and that is what we all need as we grow older. I'm over 70 and laugh when people think that 50 is old. The more you keep that mind working, you'll never grow old.

Likes: it’s typical Brain Games quality paper and binder. Dislikes: This book is full of Nobel prize winner names, words I have never seen before, presidents dog names, acronyms and a few others. I hate it! Most likely will throw this book in the trash.

Thoroughly enjoying this word search. After suffering a severe concussion, this is just what the doctor ordered to jump start my brain!Highly recommend.

My dad is 95-yrs-old and loves doing puzzles … word search, crosswords, jumble words, sudoku, etc. … He does them all! Throughout the year he gets the general store variety but for Christmas I got him a few "specialty" books. This was one that I got him and he's enjoying it. I like that it is spiral bound, too.

Each page is exactly the same with the only exception being the words and letters. No creativity...just up, down, horizontal. Page after page. Pretty boring!

This book is life changing!!! As a parent of a 4-year-old daughter with Autism - I have read this book and all of the books by these authors - they are invaluable - they give you the tools you need to teach your child, understand the process, and communicate with your childs' therapists. ABA is the only research proven method out there and it is a shame that more people aren't aware of the resources they should be using. School districts often provide minimal eclectic programs that are ineffective. Regional centers notoriously lie about services your child needs or qualifies to recieve - these are the first people I've worked with - attended their workshops- and learned their ABA - that get it right - if only everyone had the opportunity to learn from them - more kids would make better progress. This is powerful teaching and learning - I've worked at Harvard Business Schools' Executive Education Programs and I've seen a variety of teaching in my life thus far - this stuff works!

We were referred to this book when we'd asked an experienced ABA therapist if there was a "how to" manual out there that listed what had been taught to the children in the original UCLA Young Autism Project. While this book doesn't list granular specifics of the UCLA study, nor is it affiliated with it (one of the authors played a significant role in the study however, John McEachin), it does list out which ABA programs should be taught to a child on the Spectrum and more importantly, it lists the sequence in which those programs should be taught. Many of the programs detailed lead into, or are pre-requisites for, programs that are taught later on in the book. The book is really useful and well worth the money for multiple reasons. It can be referenced and easily comprehended by parents, who want to implement some of the ABA programs themselves, and also, it can be leveraged by parents so that they can ask informed questions of their professional ABA provider. In addition to providing an ABA curriculum, the book also discusses disruptive behaviors, self-stimulatory behaviors, sleep problems and toilet training; all of which are explained in chapters that are well written and easy to comprehend. It is simply written and easy to use. Look up the behavior you wish to address in the table of contents, turn to the indicated page, and there, clearly written is a step-by-step plan. Brilliant. Just what we needed.

Autism assistance that really helps teachers and parents help the child. I thought it was very well planned out, covered a lot of hot topics for most students with autism and their parents in a very understandable and helpful format. It is a big book with lots of white space (for notes or just so it does not look so overwhelming). This book was highly recommended to me by autism specialists and I in turn have found it very helpful and highly recommend it for parents, students aspiring to go into special education, and education professionals in the trenches.

Great text and reaource for any BCBA, BCaBA, RBT or other practitioners in the field of ABA

This book is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to set up formal ABA programming for their child or for anyone who wants to understand the steps of development in specific areas such as making conversation, understanding the difference between yes/no and learning how to read. I found the checklists at the back of the book to be the most helpful. I have had extensive training (as a parent) in ABA principles and Discrete Trial Training procedures and I found that this book was accurate and gave the right amount of detail when I wanted to set up my own programs to be implemented in my home.

I bought this to help develop some of my own goals for my 7 yo son with mild autism. Wow! What an eye opener! This book gave me ideas and goals to work on with him I'd never even considered! It also helped me suggest goals for our ABA agency to develop as well. I confidently recommend this book to anyone who is looking to help a child with autism. Wish I would've found it sooner.

I purchased this from MagicBook1234...perhaps that should have been my first clue. However, I purchased from them because they had the best price and the reviews for the seller seemed to be good...then I started working on my paper and found GLARING issues with the spiral copy of the manual I received.There is no way this is the approved manual. Perhaps a first run or someone horribly plagiarized the book. Glaring issues are throughout. Ex: on page 67 of the spiral book: First sentence says "mtending" instead of intending. Same pg 1st sentence under section 3.08 states "only what needs to be said". This section starts with a lower case and it is not a complete sentence! Page 68 says "10-year-olc*" instead of 10-year-old. There are level 2 headings not bolded when most are. I could go on. Be cautious when purchasing.

I am giving the low star amount because I believe I was sent a knock-off of the real thing. Although it was new and packaged, as soon as I pulled off the wrapping I noticed it had a horrid smell. I've never smelled anything like it, so it's hard to describe. But it's terrible! Then I began reading it. The pages were faded in some spots, and there are very bad spelling errors throughout what I have read so far. I had to go to my college bookstore and buy a copy from them, and I compared the real one with whatever the heck was sent to me. I am attaching pics to show how bad it is. There are a lot more errors, I am just posting a couple. I am returning it immediately. It sounds like most people are getting the real deal, but do be aware that there are bad copies going around as well.I just wanted to add that I am not talking about the errors that accompanied the first printing, this was supposedly a 7th printing with the "errors" fixed. This was a book that had clearly been badly re-typed by someone, as can be seen in the pics I included. This is a counterfeit product IMO.

I'm working on my master's degree in Library and Information Science and APA is the preferred style for my program. I was required to purchase this manual for one of my intro classes and needed to cite it for assignments, otherwise I think I could have probably done without it. The reason is that there are many free online sources for APA style guidelines, my favorite being the Purdue OWL website. While this book is well formatted and clearly written, it is simply much easier and faster to search a website for answers to most formatting questions.The main benefit I see for owning this book is that it offers many excerpts of sample papers and reference pages. Many APA formatting samples are available online, but having this book to refer to takes away any doubt about the correct formatting. Other than that I don't see a lot of benefits to owning this book, other than that it goes into more detail about style rules than online sources. My biggest wish has been that the APA would publish a searchable version of their guide online; I would happily pay good money for the convenience!

It's pretty comprehensive...has a lot of stuff about publication...and publishing...as well as the usual APA punctuation and grammar rules for the style.If your an undergrad student...this manual may be more than you're looking for when it comes to writing college papers.A lot of what this book has, and more, can be found on "Purdue dot edu" for free. And, it's comprehensive as well.If you're looking for a quick reference...I recommend APA: The Easy Way by Houghton and Houghton. I have grown to appreciate it's simplistic approach to the APA basics .Hope this helped...

This is what I consider to be the "bible" of APA style writing. Everything that you could ever need to know is covered in this manual which is written and published by the American Psychological Association, which is the association who sets out the guidelines for writing APA style papers. Owning this book will ensure that you do not have questions on paper set up, paper critique, and the all-important resources layout. So, if you are like me and you are one of the people that want to make sure that every APA paper that you write is 100% correct then you need to own this book and use it to its fullest. You will not be let down by any means. Also, I wanted to mention that you cannot beat the price for this book in hardcover!• side note, this is the most up-to-date American Psychological Association guideline book for writing APA style papers. As of 2018.

What can I say? The APA is the APA, and if you're dealing with term papers, it's a must-have. I got the spiral version, which I strongly recommend, because it will lie flat while you search for the guidelines you need.My reason for rating it four stars rather than five is due to the way the APA organizes the guide, not due to the print or binding quality of the actual manual. I've used MLA as well as APA, and I find the index listings of the APA needlessly difficult and intuitively lacking. While it's true there are things we didn't need a few years ago (the various only citation guides, etc.) there's no real reason for the manual to be organized so you have to search for several terms before you find the right one (and sometimes you still don't find it). The earliest printing of this edition had errors in it (go figure!).As a university instructor, I think the manual could benefit from additional paragraph-length examples so students can see how a full paragraph would look with the various iterations of author and page citation criteria.In case anyone needs to know this - you can also find most (or all) of the manual on the APA website. Purdue OWL is, of course, a go-to site where we refer students, but I've learned it may not be as updated as we need.Have a strong pot of coffee or a glass of wine handy if you're using this style for the first time. It is what it is, and we have to live with it.

This is by far the best tea blending and brewing book that I have found so far. There are a lot of books on the market that offer recipes or basic instructions for how to make herbal tea and remedies, but this book includes everything you need, including instructions for how to get the most benefit from your tea brewing and specifics on herbs and their actions.This would make a great addition to any herbalist's library or a great gift for someone who is looking for information on natural health benefits of herbs. I was impressed by the organisation in this book. It is easy to read, easy to understand and also convenient for when you want to find a specific part of the book for later review.Over all, this was impressive and I look forward to reading it again and using it in the future.This review is based on a complementary copy from the publisher, provided through Netgalley. Love this book. Just starting my herbal book collection so I don't have many to compare to yet. I do wish that it was easier to look up a specific remedy. For example, if you want a sleep aid tea, you might look up words like insomnia or sleep but it is under the word snooze. They are all categorized by the odd names she has given each tea. A little tricky.

It's even better than I'd hoped for, and it contains fantastic original herbal tea recipes.From start to finish, a lot of ground is covered. The author Sarah Farr, teaches you how to start your own herb garden, indoors or out. She explains the power of plants, the tea making process, blending different herbs, the difference between fair trade and direct trade, creating a good workspace, storing teas and herbs, how to make cold & hot infusions & decoctions, and training your taste buds.That's just the very beginning of the book too. There is so much more, and everything is described clearly, with empathy, and in depth. It's obvious that this woman knows her stuff and has had plenty of real life experience.She speaks honestly of her mistakes and is gentle in her encouragement. It's as if she's right there talking to you and guiding you in all the right ways.Then there are tons of amazing, well thought out recipes. They're all explained in vivid detail, and although some are for simple enjoyment, most of them have themes for the seasons, holidays, and also for strengthening our immune system, and helping us maintain good health and wellness.In each recipe, she explains why each herb is there, and what it's good for. She explains the taste, the herbal actions, and the different body systems that are affected by the recipe.However, I wish she had at least a quick reference section where she goes over a bunch of herbs that she believes are beneficial to our health, and the ones she likes the best. I like to be able to see and read about each herb and tea seperately.In the end, like I said, she explains how to begin an herb garden. She explains harvesting herbs, drying them, garbling, and storing them. She talks about seeds and seed saving, and how she connects with a garden and the wilderness around her. The language she uses and the way she describes everything is beautiful and her very real connection to nature is almost palpable.Healing Herbal Teas is thorough in its descriptions and directions, and is carefully researched and written. There is just this instant feeling you get from reading these words. The author is not just a good herbalist or just a good writer. She seems to truly have a good heart, lots of empathy and compassion, and an intricate understanding of how human bodies and minds work, as well as how herbs, plants and teas do.I'm very impressed by this book, and I'm absolutely inspired to get more into herbalism.I've been making natural wellness, health and body-care products and remedies, and I've come to a particular point now. This book is absolutely wonderful! I have been an herbalist for over a decade. My family and I grow many tea plants, herbs, and medicinal plants. There are many plants that are healthy to consume in tea, but they just don't taste good! That is where this book comes in! The author has created a truely beautiful book of tea blends. I have tried more than a handful of her tea blend recipes and they've all been lovely!This book came in very handy when making a lactation tea for a friend who is having trouble with her milk supply, and feeding formula to her baby was causing colic, so it was essential she increase her milk supply(and naturally, without prescription drugs). Fenugreek, nettle, and holy thistle are three herbs that I've known to help aid in lactation and I personally had success with, but they just don't taste that good together on their own (trust me I know!). That's where this book came into play! I was able to easily access the recipe through the index (Nursing Mama tea), and was very pleased to see I had all the supporting flavorful herbs on hand! Well let me tell you, not only was the tea tasty, it was absolutely downright delicious! There were a few herbs that I didn't even think to use to cover the not so yummy tasting ones! I am so above and beyond thrilled with this book, and that's saying a lot from the woman who has an extensive herbal reference book library! I am working my way through this book and I've had no disappointment at all. Each and every tea I've tried is blended in such a way that the herbs synergistically taste amazing together. I'm also ecstatic that I can search for teas by ailment as well. My brother is a tea lover, and I created a few blends for him. He was floored by how tasty they were and said they were my best blends yet! The proportions given in each recipe is what I've found most helpful. I am a very creative person and this book has been a great inspiration through my tea blending journey! I'm very happy to have chosen this book from the many tea blending books offered on Amazon......I won't be needing another.....as this is the tea blending book of all tea blending books! It's not just a bunch of filler recipes thrown together with a few good ones, it's a book full of artfully, carefully thought out and created teas. Each and every tea recipe is amazing!Ps. There is also a great section on herb gardening, how to save your plants seeds, how to dry your herbs, etc, that I would have found very helpful when I started my first herb garden over a decade ago!

I am returning this Haggadah. I was looking for a Haggadah that I could use with my family that includes teenagers, seniors and some who have never been to a seder. The book itself is beautifully illustrated, but omits simple parts of the Seder such as naming all the parts of the Seder plate/ it was also choppy in its sequencing which is strange considering Seder means order. I was hoping to like these as I bought 12, but am now back to square one in my search. Do not buy.

Simple, easy to follow book. Nice pictures. I like that it includes a brief story of Passover. Everything is in here, just in a simple, brief format. You can skip sections if you want, and read what you want. Plus, there are sort of discussion questions on the left hand page if you want to think more deeply about the seder. This book seems to include some pieces that more religious people would look for like hand washing and full grace after meals. I'm not that religious but the format of this book allows us to easily skip the parts we don't want to do. I like that it includes some of our favorite end of seder songs like One Kid and Who Knows One?

In no uncertain words......these Haggadahs are AMAZING!!!! Our Seder was wonderful because of them. Our age range was from 10 to 60. Everyone commented how interesting and fun they made our Seder. Everyone spontaneously participated and loved doing so!

Fantastic ~ I bought these as an upgrade to the ones we've been using that my kids made in Sunday school 10 years ago....time for an updated sedar for young teenagers. The books are pretty, content is easy to follow, nice pictures and the perfect length service for our family.

We really enjoyed this Haggadah. We changed to this new one after using the same one for 25yrs. This Family one was very easy to navigate. It’s also very kid friendly and that’s what Passover should be. It’s a short Haggadah meaning your service won’t be long.

Great Haggadah for a diverse family. We have members who are reform, some who are conservative, and some who are barely observant. This works for all of them.

Haven't used them yet, but was looking for a simplified version for our mixed marriage family. These are also cost effective that I was able to purchase 10 books without breaking the bank. Looking forward to using them for Passover.

In fact, he said they should be treated like cattle—a subtle but important distinction—but the big question is whether he actually believed what he said. As the author demonstrates in this perceptive look at Hitchcock’s American films, the director definitely believed that actors should service the story, not the other way around, but, on the other hand, he could be almost infinitely patient, allowing a performer to ease into a scene (as he did with Ingrid Bergman), and he seemed to have a keen ability to match an actor with a character (the poor performances in Hitchcock’s movies, Coffin notes, were usually due to casting choices imposed on the director by the studios). It would have been easy for Coffin to paint Hitchcock, as so many writers have already done, as a heartless director who thought actors were an inconvenient necessity, but the truth is rather more complex than that, and Hitchcock’s legion of fans should be happy that Coffin is interested in finding it. Excellent look at the casting of Hitchcock's Hollywood films and how the choices made affected what was on the screen.The trick to enjoying the book is to understand that the book is limited in its scope. It only concerns Hitchcock's American films and it only concerns the casting. If you go into the book expecting grand tales on the complete productions of the films you are going to be disappointed. However if you go into the book and go along with what it's doing you will have a great time. For me the film forced me to stop and think about films that might have been or what might have happened if other films had been cast differently. The fact that the book forces you to really think about how all films are cast and the effect the casting is one of the book's strongest points.

A whole new perspective on this fascinating film maker

The author is quite right in drawing attention to the paucity of material regarding casting in Alfred Hitchcock's films, but unfortunately this book does little to remedy that deficiency. This book contains no original research, and after deciding on a fairly superficial main thesis--Hitchcock did not give much credit to his actors--Ms. Coffin slavishly follows this idea through brief (6 to 8-page) chapters about the director's films from "Rebecca" through "Family Plot."These chapters offer very little depth or insight. There is NO bibliography and her notes reveal she has relied mostly on the Donald Spoto biography of Hitchcock, the Truffaut/Hitchcock interviews, and star biographies published decades after the fact rather than consult original documents. Her book often contains egregious errors. Here is a typical example from her chapter on "Dial M for Murder":“When first purchasing the property of the stage play, Hitchcock wanted to cast the most elegant and beloved actress of the time: Audrey Hepburn.” This is just plain wrong. "Dial M for Murder" started shooting on July 30, 1953. Audrey Hepburn had already completed "Roman Holiday" in 1952, but the film did not get released until late August, 1953 and her TIME magazine cover came in September, 1953. In July, 1953 Hepburn was still an unknown to American moviegoers except for bit parts in foreign films (like her 12-second walk-on as "Chiquita" in "The Lavender Hill Mob"). This makes the rest of Coffin's "analysis" fairly painful reading, e.g. "Although a star like Audrey Hepburn would have been an undeniable box-office draw for audiences, she would have also been the biggest star in the movie..."Her chapter on "Psycho" fails to mention Hitchcock's overriding casting imperative with that film--getting the best actors he could for the lowest prices [Tony Perkins for $40,000, Janet Leigh for $25,000, Vera Miles for $10,000 (!)]--in the process of making a low-budget horror film. Coffin also does not seem to have actually watched any of Janet Leigh's prior films when stating, "It was unexpected to see a good girl like Leigh with short hair in her bra and underwear, committing robbery and trying to escape." Leigh's physical charms had unabashedly been presented throughout most of her previous career, and her portrayal of Linda, an alcoholic glamour girl marrying an older man for his money in "Safari" (1956) or Anna, a ruthless Soviet spy who uses sex to entrap John Wayne in "Jet Pilot" (1957) were hardly "good girl" parts. She literally had her bodice ripped (exposing her naked back) as Morgana in "The Vikings" (1958) and displayed plenty of cheesecake for the viewers of "Touch of Evil" (1958), so Hitchcock undressing her in "Psycho" was not unexpected at all: having her murdered while undressed was the coup.Apparently this book started as a college thesis--which is where it should have stayed until Ms. Coffin had done more research and consulted with more critical (& knowledgeable) editors that were available to her at Rowman & Littlefield.P.S. 5-Star reviews from family members [SEE "Coffintom"] are simply EMBARRASSING!
