I have never given a book a bad review before and have always hated reading negative reviews with nonconstructive criticism. That being said it will be hard to be positive about this one as I feel like I have been taken. I am one of those guys that when I get into a hobby I read every book I can and although much of the reading is redundant I always learn something new. I did not learn anything from this book it is hands down the worse book purchase ever. With all the pointless pictures it took me about 45 minutes to read.This book does not give you the information you need to make jerky, the author goes on about selecting knives and butchering animals things you don't need to really know which would be fine but he seems to stop half way every process leaving you without the understanding.This book is filled with pictures one or two on every page. The problem is over half are pictures measuring the ingredients and piles of meat without any illustration that actually teaches you anything. I think one picture of using a measuring cup or showing what a pile of meat looks like would suffice but there are an average of about 1.5 per page. If I wanted to see a picture of a Bradley smoker I could see it on their website and I am not sure why they would not talk about different smokers on the market. The author uses a full page to show you what the outside of a Bradley looks like and does not show you how to use a smoker or load the jerky etc. This is kind of like a kids picture book and the information could have easily be fit into a 5 page pamphlet without the pictures, they are clearly used to up the page count not to teach you how to make jerky. There are web pages with better information you can print out.Again I hate to be negative but this guy took my ten dollars and I can find no redeeming qualities to this incomplete and scattered picture book, it is anything but complete.

This is my first time reading a book that was really written by Clancy. But I have read other books with his name on the cover all of which were based on his video game franchise Splinter cell. In short I have been a fan since 2005 when I played Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory along with Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six Vegas. I am just one of many readers and Video gamers who will miss Clancy`s style of writing. With Clancy it's simple, you either love what he does or you don't, and if you are fan, then it's been a long time, about ten years since he has been on the Best Seller list, but once again that is where he is headed. Clancy is the master of his genre because he takes the time to learn technical aspects of what he is writing about. This means when you read Clancy you are reading the real thing. Facts are checked, scenarios are discussed with technical aspects, and nothing is left to chance or done offhandedly.When he talks weapons, he goes into the detail that a munitions dealer would deal with. In this novel we see operators using a Knights Armament M110 Sniper System. He tells you it's the best because he has done the homework. It is facts like this that the master storyteller weaves into the tapestry of his books that many readers including myself find fascinating.I am not going to discuss the plot in detail because that's why we read the book. Here's what you need to know. This is a big blot book which is what most of Clancy's books represent. In this case, Jack Ryan is a retired President of the United States. His son Jack Junior is running a secret independent anti-terrorist agency that his father the President started.It is called The Campus, and it has been successful for years going after the bad guys. The current President seems to be weak on terrorism and is more concerned with guaranteeing the legal rights of the bad guys than protecting the country. You are already seeing the subplots develop.Clancy puts us in the thick of it. We as readers are in the game. When Delta Force operators and Rangers go into the caves of Afghanistan we are with them. We breathe the odors; we hear the sounds, and we feel the tension. We find ourselves silencing our own voices because we don't want the good guys to be caught, and that is classic Clancy.In this book there is evil in the world, and in DEAD or ALIVE, an evil man in the world is at lodge. He has wreaked havoc on the Western world. We call him the Emir, and his objective is to deal a devastating terrorist blow to the United States. The book takes you around the world while Ryan Junior, and his father's old hands John Clark and Ding Chavez join Ryan along with Brian and Dominic Caruso with Mary Foley.It's a race for time, and for America. Will the good guys win, and where is the Emir? Is he in a cave 8,000 miles away or is he right here among us? You will have to read the book to find out and oh what an ending.Why I Love Clancy and you will too?Please allow me to give you a feel why Clancy was the absolute best writer in his fiction segment. It is his incessant ability to weave odd important facts into his stories, and to weave reality into the fabric of the plot:* His description of the computer setup at the National Security Agency is without equal.* There are 125,000 cranes in the world and currently Dubai has 30,000 of them currently building and rebuilding the city. Who knows things like this?* Plans do not survive the first contact with the enemy.* Laziness has consequences. If you are a sentry, if you pause, if you hesitate, if you light up a cigarette, you are DEAD.* You don't have to like it; you just have to do it.* The FBI Urban Tactical Training Facility is preeminent in the world. They are the best of the best. See why in the book.CONCLUSION:This is a great read, all 848 pages of it. You start the book and you can't put it down, and in the end isn't that why we read Clancy. We just keep going until we are finished, and when we are finished we are ready for more. That is why he will be missed by so many readers out there. Read it today and see for yourself, and thank you for reading this review.

This story focuses on the workings of the campus, the super-secret, off the books intelligence gathering and action oriented paramilitary outfit. After leaving “Rainbow,” John Clark & Ding Chavez also join the campus as operatives. The big target is the “Emir,” who caused the 9/11 attack. The country is poorly reacting tomEd Kealty’s imperial presidency. Arnie VanDam convinces Jack Ryan, Sr. to run for President again, ad the country needs him. Overall, this is a great read !

All in all a great job. Only hiccups were the author, perhaps letting his own, somewhat liberal bias in. About torture and putting that in to some rather unbelievable statements from known characters like Clark. Really, he considers water boarding torture? Seals and many spec ops troops are subjected to it in training.Leaving that aside great story development and very good research on such technical topics such as the many flying segments.Looking forward to the next book in the series, thanks for such a great read!

I have been a fan since the 1980's and Hunt For Red October, Red Storm, Patriot Games, and finally stopped at the Bear. Do not like his splinter cell books, mainly because he does not write them and its as obvious as the day is bright.Thought I would give these a try and my other favorite author W E B Griffin has also fallen out of characters and is now having his stories ghost written by people who well, there is a reason they are ghost writers.While this book was interesting and entertaining, it did lack a bit of the old Clancy. Can't quite put my finger on it, but it might of been the constant references to his original novels and how this one is trying to live off the exploits of the previous books more than actually creating memories. The action in this book was quick and did not leave a lasting impression with me, as did every freaking word in Without Remorse did. Why they never made that into a movie, I will never know.So my recommendation is read this book, if your a hard core Clancy fan, don't get your hopes up. If your new, stop reading, go back to Hunt, Red, Patriot, Kremlin, Clear, and the remainders or this book will make no sense to you.

I ordered a set of three Clancy books just to catch up on the story line. Dead or Alive is believe it or not a good read. I'm not looking for some Nobel prize material with a series book, just good entertainment. This book provides it to a tee. The Characters are there still as they were with the signs of time added to it to bring more life into them. Don't expect a bunch of 25 year olds to be running around the world saving it....(oh, wait a minute,there are 25 year olds running around ) Just NEW CHARACTERS to get used to with the originals coming along for the ride.The number of pages is still showing that Clancy likes a long read and his readers can agree that his books will always be able to provide a way to lose yourself for a few hours or days away from what we call society today.Dead or Alive picks up with the story line and provides a few things that you remember from before. If you are a fan of the Jack Ryan series, take the plunge and catch up with old and new friends. You can't help but like this book because it FITS with the series. Those of you that have trashed it in your reviews are the same type of people who at the beginning of the TV season load their DVD's with the Twilight Zone series and then complain that it's black and white.It comes down to....if you liked the series,then buy Dead or Alive and enjoy it. If you're looking for some great ground-breaking material, buy it anyway. Too much techno babble will rot your brain.

This is THE HIKING BOOK for San Diego county-- it is absolutely incredible! I have other hiking books for places in the area, but none of them are so thorough and detailed. There are 39 different chapters, organized according to areas, for example, there are more than a dozen chapters devoted to the massive Anza Borrego desert, one of my favorite places to explore. In addition to great parks like Anza, there are hike descriptions for all the coastal areas, like bays and beaches, and lots of chapters on mountain hikes like Palomar and the Laguna mountains. The hikes range from easy day hikes suitable for kids to long backpacking treks into the wilderness-- there are hikes for all different levels and interests. Every hike (and there are 282 in the book!) contains all the stats like mileage and hiking time and trail difficulty, but the best aspect of the book, in my opinion, is how well written and descriptive all of the hikes are! Scott Turner does an amazing job, throughout the book, of writing engaging and beautiful descriptions, complete with photos, of the lovely landscapes and wildlife that you will encounter on your hikes. As soon as I got my copy, I began poring over the chapters and totally lost track of time because the book is so engaging and fun to read-- hours later, and many post-its later, I have a long list of new adventures-- many of them are places right here in my backyard that I never even knew existed! There are also helpful charts in the beginning of the book that break down the hikes by difficulty, elevation gain, etc. and let readers know if dogs or mountain bikes are allowed on the trails-- this is excellent, as I have a new bike and am excited to find some good spots to ride. I brought the book with me to Anza Borrego this week, during the wildflower season, and discovered some new places and hikes that are now some of my favorites (Coyote Canyon-- never seen so many flowers in my life!). It will take me YEARS to get through even a small portion of the many beautiful hikes included in this book. Jerry Schad, who produced the original version of this book, would be so thrilled and impressed with this revised edition-- no one could have done it better than Scott Turner! This is, as the Los Angeles Times has called it, the Bible of San Diego hiking. If you live here or are taking a trip to explore the outdoors in San Diego county, you definitely want this one in your backpack!

My SO is very outdoorsy, and I'm... kind of outdoorsy? I got this as an anniversary gift for him to use when we go on hiking dates.There is plenty of information in here, I love that there are directions to the hikes, helpful tips, elevations, "good for kids/pets" etc.My only complaint is that it doesn't list if there are restroom facilities available. You're probably thinking "but, you're out in nature! Pop a squat behind a bush!"... well, some places are very crowded, and some don't have vegetation to hide behind... I have a digestive disorder and it would be really helpful if I knew there was a bathroom where I'm going beforehand so I can try to plan and pack accordingly.

An incredible update to an incredible book. It's clear a ton of time and energy went into re-hiking every trail. Love the variety of photos, as well as the specific details provided about each hike. Even though people think the weather in San Diego is perfect year round, this book gives great guidance for what time of year is optimal for any given hike... and when it might be too hot or dangerous. Love that options are given for the hard core hikers, as well as those of us who are more casual enthusiasts. A true asset for anyone living in San Diego.

Fantastic addition to my collection of "things to do in San Diego." This book is THOROUGH, and I can't imagine even one trail was left out. The assessment of skill level and terrain is right on the money. I often bring my dog along, so I appreciate the guides suggestions about which hikes work for our canine friends as well. I look forward to enjoying trails around my world for years to come.

There are plenty of hiking books and websites that focus on San Diego, but this is by far the most comprehensive and user friendly. I love the detailed information about how to reach the trailhead, what to expect during the hike, and what the payoff is. If you’re new to hiking or just new to San Diego, this is the best resource you can pick up!

It's nice to get an updated edition of this major trail reference. Generally the in-text maps contained in Wilderness Press books are very good. Unfortunately I was very disappointed with the map quality in the 2017 edition. Poor choices were made for the line symbols; paved roads and trails are both depicted as solid gray lines, making it difficult for the user to differentiate between the two types.

Alcoholic Pass trail, 2 AM on a clear moonless night, miles from any other person, where you can see the light of the Milky Way reflected on snow capped Peaks, howl with Coyotes, beat your Shaman's drum and journey through time as the Space Station passes overhead through silver streaks of "falling stars." What is there not to like. Thanks You Jerry Shad. I would have missed this hike if not for you.

Riggs (Ben Jonson: A Life), an English professor at Stanford University, traces the life of Elizabethan poet, playwright and spy Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593), placing him in the context of the institutions that both fostered his keen intellect and reinforced his awareness of his lowly class origins (his father was a shoemaker). Riggs suggests that Marlowe, Shakespeare's great contemporary, author of Tamburlaine and Dr. Faustus, may have sought to overcome those origins through his unusual and dangerous career path. Working in the New Historicist vein most recently mined by Stephen Greenblatt in Will in the World, Riggs evokes the pedagogical preoccupations of Marlowe's school and university education, revealing layers of intricate detail in Marlowe's formation as a literary artist: his study and translation of Ovid, his innovations in blank verse, and the substance and reception of all of his plays and poetry. While downplaying Marlowe's disputed sexuality, Riggs pays careful attention to the homoerotic and homophobic aspects of his plays, most notably Edward II, considering each in its contemporary moral and political setting. Riggs concludes with fresh insights into the mysterious circumstances of Marlowe's violent death. *Starred Review* A biography of Shakespeare's greatest forebear in the Elizabethan theater must be the product of considerable grubbing and decoding. No portrait of Marlowe (1564-93) exists; he is referred to by several names (e.g., Morley, Merlin) that are spelled and, one would think, pronounced differently; and he had reasons to be untraceable, including the disesteem in which playwrights were held and his work-for-hire as a secret agent, maybe even a double agent, of the factions contending for power in England. Those contestants were the queen and high-church Protestants; the disestablished English Catholic Church and Catholic aristocrats at home and expatriate; and the rising Puritans, who could practically ally with the Catholics. Intelligent young lower-class men like Marlowe, the Cambridge scholarship-student son of an originally itinerant worker, functioned with enormous fluidity among those factions. Basically, Marlowe was a queen's man, but he was often arrested and ultimately murdered, Riggs shows, because he was suspected of being, or about to become, an atheist collaborator with the Catholics. His plays, as Riggs very persuasively parses them, argue that he was indeed atheist; with his reported behavior--rambunctious and blasphemous--they argue that he was antinomian and antiauthoritarian, too. Inarguably, one of the most famous playwrights in the Elizabethan world after Shakespeare is his rival, Christopher Marlowe, who within a brief meteoric career wrote some of the most remarkable dramas for the English stage such as "Tamburlaine the Great", "Doctor Faustus", "The Jew of Malta", "Edward II and the "Massacre of Paris".David Riggs declares in the prologue "This is a book about Marlowe's life, his works, and his world", however, the one element that strikes the reader is Riggs' graphic accounts of Marlowe's world, and therefore this book certainly lives up to its title in that respect. The information concerning his education, the influences of his childhood, the blood-curdling world of Elizabethan politics and religious tensions definitely keeps the reader turning the pages. For the record, Riggs supports the theory Marlowe's untimely end was part of an assassination plot hatched by the Elizabethan secret service: his argument is convincing. While Riggs does explore Marlowe's life, works and horrific death in depth, it is obvious the reader is expected to be familiar with the playwright's biography and works to a point already before certain sections can be understood in this book. Also, there are areas where the text tends to prove cumbersome and difficult to keep track of, such as Riggs' account of the cloak-and-dagger world of the Elizabethan secret service and those who became entangled within this sphere; however, I would not let this be a deterrent, if anything, this displays how tangled the webs of deception had become in that era. While it cannot be proven how far Marlowe had sunk in that quagmire in the domestic scene, we can fully appreciate the dangers he was courting if he was employed as one of their agents in the field, especially his escape from his counterfeiting escapade in the Dutch town of Flushing.The book contains an extensive bibliography, index and references. Christopher Marlowe, the Elizabethan poet and playwright, was one of the most talented members of his generation. He helped pioneer the use of blank verse in dramatic poetry and used it to produce five masterpieces while William Shakespeare--who was only two months younger than Marlowe--was still finding his dramatic footing. Who can say how great he might have become if he were not cut down (possibly on orders of the Queen, herself) at the age of 29.As a man, Marlowe was the "unShakespeare". Where Shakespeare was a prudent man who invested his money wisely and was careful not to offend authority, Marlowe was a risk-taker both in his personal life and in his plays. In an age where not toeing the official ine was punishable by death, Marlowe never met a line he was not tempted to cross. If this is what got him killed, it also makes him a fascinating person to read about.David Riggs weaves Marlowe's personal tragedy into an exciting volume that I found as hard to put down as any thriller. It is a book I can heartily recomend.

I agree with the reader who says the book is often abstruse. The chapter on double-agenting had my eyes rolling and I was constantly looking back pages to see who's who. Add to this the fact that these Brits (or their elite) can be referred to by a seemingly endless list of tiles each (and, then, their names, as well) and that the minor functionaries and offices of government aren't on everyone's tongue and one often feels mired in the mud. I think this could have been alleviated with chapter introductions or summaries or just a more prudent handling of the proper nouns. Anyway, when I get to that point in any book, I just try to make sure I'm getting the main point and head thru at a trot.... Life is short, and there's so much to read!What I got that was positive from this book, and it was very positive indeed, was a sense of M's contribution to blank verse and the development of Elizabethan drama. I went to my shelves to look at some earlier stuff, and yeppir, there's Marlowe at the dividing line. This certainly gave me a whole new appreciation of him as a figure in English literature and has got me back to sampling some other Elizabethan writing, including his ,comparing and contrasting, which is a nice trip. Very interesting to see how these boy's classical education trained them to snap off large amounts of magnificent English poetry. (The last British governor of Chad remarked in the NYRB that he had zero training when assigned, but the underlying assumption of his superiors was that if you translate Latin poetry to Greek poetry ad lib you could surely run a country! I suppose history has dimmed that conceit, but as a liberal artser, I liked it anyway.)The historical/political background was already well known to me and as far as who might have or could have done this or that, I like my speculation with the facts.(The book is unfortunatly cheaply produced, though not more so than many, and and the illustrations are really muddy. A book can be handsomely done for $30. Check out, for instance, Who Murdered Chaucer - St. Martin's Press - for a sad contrast in book production, also a $30 dollar item.)

The academic Grenblatt cited this book in an article he wrote, and that was enough for me to trust it. After reading it, I'll have to say while it is involved and expects its reader to pay attention, it's a remarkable book. My fascination with Marlowe was bolstered by it. If you love Marlowe or Elizabethan England, this scholarly but accessible book will hold your interest fast.

I read Michael Sincere's Understanding Stocks (1st Edition) about 8 years ago (slightly before the 2008 crash), and found that it was probably one of the best introductions to understanding trading and the stock market that I had so far come across. I previously had read some of the Little Book of Investing series including one by Morningstar Analyst Pat Dorsey which were very good explanations of how investing works, but offered very little explanations on how to actually place trades in the Stock Market. Like another reviewer said I placed one of my first trades with the instructions of this book ( Western Digital stock when it traded for only around 28/ share (8 yrs ago), how's that for specific!). In response to the reviewer who said this book is too general and sounds like a High School teacher's introduction to stocks I would disagree, first in this second edition which I recently purchased to see any updates or changes, he includes profiles of Wall Street legends like William O' Neal, profiles Peter Lynch's trading system, and even includes his own interview with Vanguard fund founder John Bogle, how much more specifics do you want for a book that is supposed to be a primer/ introduction to stock trading? Is this book going to tell you how to short specific stocks on the S&P 500 based off the next "ominous" indicator signal "derived" from the previous 30 and 50 MACD, not really but it does explain what a MA and MACD is, and gives a solid introduction to how Technical and Fundamental Analysis works, and if you're someone who doesn't know what these terms mean, then this book is your place to start before you think about investing in the Stock Market.This is not to carry the water for Michael Sincere's Understanding Stocks book , but just to point out that many times it seems people look for books like this to make them a "successful" something or other (in this case stock trader) but stock investing and especially active trading are not an exact science but more of an art, so like any good art instructional book, it can only lay out the palette, explain what each tool does,give some solid techniques and examples, and leave the rest to your own tuition and creativity. But Sincere does offer some solid advice about whether he thinks beginners should trade individual stocks in the stock market at all. Great for explaining C++ to someone like me who learned computer programming a long time ago (1980's). Thanks to this and another book, I'm finally starting to get Object Oriented Programming - something I've been struggling with and even resisting because of my Procedural background.Because the computing world is changing so fast, it's hard for textbooks to stay current. The first problem I had was with the "bloodshed" IDE. I used the link given to download and install, and my first program seemed to compile. But I could NOT run it. I kept getting a message saying "source file not compiled." After many internet searches, I finally learned that my IDE was out of date. A new link for Dev-Cpp 5.11 did the trick!The next problem I noticed was a string function that didn't work: name.remove(1,2). No such "remove" function showed up when I did an internet search. I think the author may have confused it with the .erase function - which worked exactly as the other function was supposed to.My final problem was the link given for Microsoft Visual Studio. It did not work - but it's not hard to do an internet search for an up-to-date link.

I took c++ a few years ago and this showed up as a free offer at launch. So I grabbed it and just took some time to skim through it. Over all the basics anyone needs to know in order to write a c++ program are present. You can gain the same knowledge if not more if you search the internet and spend sometime going through different links, but this has them all in one location and can be a quick reference.If I had to choose one thing that did bother me, it would be the inline comments in the code examples. I could not find a section explaining the difference between inline commenting and block commenting nor the notations on each or when to use them in the book.Over all not a bad guide, but could benefit from some more updated resources such using visual studio express instead of referencing dream spark for students at the end of the book and a better layout on the content when code examples are being used.

Helped to show me the basic workings of the language. Also showed that it takes a lifetime to learn and become proficient. Should be a part of every programmers reference library.

I teach programming so I view this book in that light. I would recommend it as a first level course in "C" programming for anyone in high school or above. They should have some other language as a prerequisite such as Basic. In order to learn "C++", a person needs a foundation in "C". The book describes basic variables and functions and their syntax using examples in a "Text Mode" or "cmd mode" environment. There is no "Windows Type" programming. The author only spends only the last chapter or two on "C++". This book could be read in parallel with K&R "C Programming". A strong point in the book is that the author assumes no computer tools and walks the reader through downloading a free compiler suitable for following along with the book. At the end, he recommends Microsoft's free tools (Visual Studio) in order to do real windows programming using "C#" which is very similar to "C++".

Love the way it is written, excellent for any microcontroller

A fairly good overview and book for hose who have moved on to bigger programming languages and have forgotten some of the basic languages they cut their teeth on.
